The conversation about anxiety and stress is so relevant. When I’m by myself I sing free, I’m not worried about what I sound like but I feel consistent but as soon as I get to my voice lessons, I’m stressed and overthinking the entire time about every note that I can’t even get through a song entirely without feeling like I’ve already failed.

I know this sounds strange but I got rid of my stage fright by asking my family members and close friends to suddenly say “showtime” and I would sing an agreed upon song at any time of the day in the house or somewhere where I’m comfortable. Being put on the spot enough times trained my body to be ready to sing whenever without fear. It’s scary in the beginning but if you just let go and just sing without worrying about sounding perfect you begin to no longer have as much nervousness when you sing because you’ve trained yourself to embrace the feeling of singing in front of others as opposed to knowing that you have to sing and building up your stress in anticipation.

I love how excited he is to be doing this video with him. He's giving so many props to him by explaining things properly like "yeah I know my shit and I'm confident because I had a good teacher". And then passing the point over to the pro knowing that he is going to validate everything Sam said in his own way. Sam has a very unique way of explaining information that us virgin singers are able understand. Good video guys!

Your kindness, especially towards reacting to the American Idol bad auditions gave me a little push to see a voice teacher. 6:37 That happened to me on Friday.I was performing Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and halfway through my part I literally wasn’t even thinking of singing it’s like my body wasn’t there but my mouth was making sound by itself and I was just thinking “Oh I wonder what I’m going to be doing later I wonder if I’m going to be eating something or if this is going to go well.” Then towards the end I was like “Oh yeah the song.” 🙂🤣

I've never been a solo singer. Choir direction that I've received in the past was never as clear as your comments are. It's very interesting to hear your explain how to form the proper sounds. One director was fond of calling out "Alto section, I need more Karen Carpenter from you!". ( Hey I'm old, this was in the middle 70's.) I knew very well what sound he wanted but had no idea how to produce it. I love watching your reactions, it's clear you love the sounds of the human voice.

Can you two explain why Sam Smith's voice has such a distinct and unusual quality? I know nothing about technique or vocal terminology, so i cannot adequately describe what I am hearing, but I certainly know it isn't like any voice I've heard before! To me is sounds "glommy," as though he is singing with soup in his mouth! Lol. Can you help explain Sam Smith's voice? Thanks!

@BravelyUntested
@BravelyUntested 4 жыл бұрын
Part of it is his speaking voice naturaly is very weighty. So he can sing pretty light and effortlessly in his chest voice and get a rich tone. To contrast that, his falsetto/higher notes are very airy, which in effect can be dry and somber. The way he uses these colors helps him excel at singing these sad, sort of somber songs. Plus I think thematically, the material lends itself to what you are describing. For reference: I also studied voice in college and have taught k-12 music briefly

@@BravelyUntested : he has kind of a "glommy" voice. like he's singing with mashed potatoes in his mouth. it's definitely different than most voices.

Thank you for reacting to Sam Smith. He is one of my absolute favorite modern artists. I’ve always had a bit of trouble figuring out what exactly he’s doing with his voice in some of the higher phrases of his songs - “like is this falsetto or mixed or still chest? What the heck is this?” In fact when I sing along (which I can only do on the absolute best of days) with some of it I will notice he slides into a full falsetto without you ever noticing unless you’re trying to mimic the sound yourself. Utterly adore his style of music. Like you both mention in the video, I have noticed the times where I can sing his high sections have always been when 1. My chest is clear 2. The more relaxed I am as a person, the easier it is for me to sing the notes, and sometimes it’s surprisingly easy (just wish I could do it consistently haha) cheers!!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing cause it's easy to do head voice for me and harder to get falsetto anything cause I don't have that technique or rhythmic style, so the head voice part is like the easiest then when I say quicker these tear dry I release breath to make it sound similar but not like him he's too good

You’re right about the ‘quicker’ being falsetto, but the rest is basically all head. Sam, like me just has a naturally higher voice and people mistakenly think its either falsetto or mix when in fact its just normal chest for us.

Not even saying this because i am his fan but as someone who grew up listening to broadway musicals and opera, i am extremely picky on my singers. But he is seriously incredible. It is unfair that the international community doesnt give him the attention he deserves. I really hope you would react to him to that people learn who he is. I promise you will not regret it. Sam can U have a look at "Spacehog- in the meantime- 1996" it's live on Letterman. Singer has a huge mouth (playing a Ricky, and wearing a dress- for reference) Same song 'live in New York' (b&w clip) shows a great flip to the head, for someone with such a deep, rich voice..The song draws on Beatles influence- which is often so evident in 90's/grunge music. The singer I'd put in with the likes of Mike Patton from Faith no more.. The both are clear and articulate (unless by choice) and I feel like I can hear some kind of classical training and/or a definite musical theatre vibe. Sorry to hijack the comments. Like to hear your thoughts. G.

Can a person who has never really been able to sing (just wants to sing around the house and to her grandchildren) ever learn to sing, or would I have figured it out by now if it was something one could "learn". Low register and a hoarse sounding voice seems to be my two biggest problems.

I've been watching your channel for like 1 year now. Hmm I'm a guitarist and only have vague vocabulary relative to my studies, but would you recommend someone whos aspiring to be a singer to seek out local voice help, or is it possible via online. i know i need guidance like you're demonstrating in this video with your teacher. i hated guitar lessons, so but ive grown. if anyone can help, let me know.
