Before I sit down with Alissa White-Gluz for a tea time, I wanted to see the progression of where Arch Enemy's sound has traveled to. . . and this did not disappoint. This is a super fast song with some maniacal beats, all while spreading a critical message we should all listen to!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Arch Enemy performing "Sunset Over The Empire" for the first time.

This is probably a bit different from your usual reaction requests but can you do a vocal breakdown of these 3 SK musical actors performing the same 2-song cuts in their curtain calls from the same musical? I picked the clearest (face-on w minimal reverb) fancams w live audios possible for a fair comparison. 2 of them are famous career musical-theater actors (believe w different extent of formal vocal training backgrounds) & the 3rd is a singer-songwriter (known for pop ballads & occasional ventures into other genres eg jazz, rock etc; no formal vocal-training). I’d really love to hear you analyze the differences in their vocal techniques! I would love her to do a special, doing Nemesis twice, one with Angela in Tokyo, either 2008 or 2009 work they were both incredible than a newer version with Alissa from Wacken, Resurrection Fest, Bloodstock or any of the other festivals where they always finish their show with it. Comparing and contrasting the 2 versions and going into a more in depth analysis of harsh vocals with 2 different singers singing the exact same song but in different ways that both feel natural to the song.

A lot of people keep requesting it. I think this might be some sort of a deal or a promo thing. Where Alissa comes in for an interview and Elizabeth does a vocal analysis video on a newer single. It's probably how she gets some of these high profile bands/singers to come in for an interview. She has done this a few times before where a tea time and a new song are released at the same time.

I truly appreciate Alissa as a vocalist, you can tell by her studio recordings and stage performance that she gives the band her all. They are all excellent in their craft 👏😍

If you liked Jeff Loomis' guitar style, I highly recommend checking out NEVERMORE. The lead singer, Warrel Dane (RIP), has a unique vocal style that would best be described as 'Darkened Power Metal'. I would recommend 'The Godless Endeavor' to start. They have toured with Opeth, Arch Enemy and Megadeth, just to name a few.

There are already versions on YT, but I obviously dunno how that would work legally for you. However, this is a BIG recommend, because she not only shows her Growls in all their beauty, but also delves REALLY deep into her full clean range and the song is just perfect. Thank you for always delivering quality content, Elizabeth!

You're finally getting closer to one of my top 3 vocalists. Aside from Geoff Tate and Jon Arch (Fates Warning, Arch/Matheos). The guitarist Jeff Loomis was a founding member of Nevermore with vocalist (R.I.P.) Warrell Dane who also sang for Sanctuary who was produced by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth. Warrell had a style of his own. From the piercing "Battle Angels" to the entire "Into the Mirror Black" album. When he Formed Nevermore he really got into his groove.
@brandensherman
@brandensherman 2 жыл бұрын
Jeff Loomis, now a guitarist in Arch Enemy, was a founding member of Nevermore along with the late Warrel Dane, and they were a band that was very influential for their use of 7-string guitars in the early 2000's. Warrel passed away in 2017, but he was one of the greatest lyricists in all of metal, had an incredibly expansive vocal range, and poured his soul into his voice. I would recommend This Godless Endeavor, The Heart Collector or My Acid Words from their Year of the Voyager live performance. He would have been a fantastic tea time guest, too.

I know how much you love live performances, both to see the singers as they're singing but also the extras different bands put into their live performances to contrast them with the studio versions. My favorite "extra" from Alissa is her introduction to War Eternal in each of their concerts since War Eternal released. "We are Arch Enemy, and this is fucking war", the way she always does the "fucking war" bit is incredible. Slightly different in each performance, I think their best version was hands down Resurrection Fest 2019 with her roar on war and than the music entering echoing her roar further, it's such a brilliant moment with Alissa roaring like a true lioness that we can only listen to in the live performances. So I would love to see Elizabeth react to that part specifically but also the song as a whole, being from the early days of the Alissa era of Arch Enemy. Here is the Resurrection Fest 2019 version I was talking about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWSbeWt6p9F6rsk Begin watching at 6:14 for the "We are Arch Enemy..." part.

I like her more in " the Agonist" much more, because there she was signing growl, scream and few versions of clean vocals, so it was much more showcasing her voice, while Arch Enemy songs are very typical and "standartized" and she sings similarly in each song, mainly with only growl and that's it. But Arch Enemy is much more popular and bigger band, so I can't blame her for going to here, she became hundred times more famous with it, and can spend more time singing and more time on herself.

My cousin turned me onto Arch Enemy back in 2003 with the song We Will Rise. I've been a fan ever since, I believe it was either '03 or '04 when I got to see them open for Slayer at Harpos in Detroit 🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘

Hi there...a few months ago you reacted to your first Nightwish track with Annette Olzon. She had a hard time filling Tarja's shoe, and Tuomas wrote as if she was still fronting the band. Take a shot at Annette's new band, "The Dark Element" (with guitarist/keyboardist Jani Liimatainen from Sonata Arctica) - songs are written for her, allowing for her strength to show to its best results - "The Ghost and the Reaper": kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYvWpnqqq5hgmdE

That's really just an opinion though. They're both great songs, quite different, but I wouldn't say either one is far superior as far as technicality goes.

As others have said: you really should check out her work with The Agonist, which is where she not only growls but shines with her clean vocals as well! (The entire Prisoners album is awesome.)

Hi! Huge fan! I have an odd recommendation for you. Darci Lynne, any of her performances. She is a ventriloquist/singer, ranging from American ballads to Italian opera. Just thought you might be interested. Btw, your breakdowns and reactions are the epitome of "feeling the music"

I would like to suggest various songs of Fernando Ribeiro, the lead singer of *Moonspell.* For exemple "Angelizer", "Opium", "The Hermit Saints", "Alma Mater", "Axis Mundi", "Breathe"... They have been singing since the 1990 and have a really wide range of vocal styles. And there is a "warmth" in his voice (when he is doing clear singing at least ) that I think is interesting.

Thats a much better pick, and this song goes very well with her harsh vocals. Thanx for this one I really like her undertone with her harsh vocals and that they are so clear pronounced. And did I mention, I would love a review on Skunk anansie or Nina Hagen 😀

14:38 IDK how much music theory you know but I immediately recognized that progression at 14:12 by ear as a diminished 7th arpeggio... and since Arch Enemy tunes to C standard, I (correctly; confirmed with Ultimate Guitar) guessed that we're talking about Cdim7: C, Eb, Gb, A ... except really, with these intervals, any of them could be the root because they're always a minor 3rd apart. Quite common in metal; Michael Amott often uses this pattern in solos. It lends a rather evil character to runs, which is why it's used. Also, instead of staying in the same key, you could pivot out of the arpeggio into the key a tritone away, or to the relative major or minor mode if you wanted to (and the rest of the band was on board). Highly versatile. The song bounces around in tonality, starting in F minor and going to C phrygian for the verse, and it kind of alternates between the two.

Incidentally, Alissa's beau is Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, the ex-guitarist for horror punk legends The Misfits (covered multiple times by Metallica, btw). I mention this, because this is a genre that has several singers that could be interesting to look at - the style tends to draw vocal influence from '50s rockabilly, mixing it with punk (rock) and horror movie themes. The most obvious singer to look at first, is of course founding member of The Misfits and de facto inventor of horror punk, the oft imitated but rarely bettered Glenn Danzig, aka "Evil Elvis". His most famous tune, Mother, though, is from his namesake band, which is more gothic tinged metal than his earlier punk days. It's the obvious place to start if you want to look at his vocal style.

I think I've just realized something obvious about why I really like Alissa's vocals vs Angela's (props to the legend due though). She reminds me of other death vocalists out of the Quebec death metal scene in style and diction. It was that note about "learned" that you made at the beginning that made me catch it. Tastes of Neuraxis, Augury, maybe even Cryptopsy. There was a sound that came out of Quebec death metal in the 2000s that (obviously) seems to have influenced how she sings and it just hits me right.
