With Iam it’s about connecting with the audience, and that is his gift, his genuine tone delivery although without formal training he still delivers. He will need to improve his range and challenge himself to go higher and be confident with it. I’m biased to him, but for those like you who have higher expectations of his vocal potential and agility, want him to go more. I agree with you on that aspect. Iam can be much more and I believe he will, as you said, he needs to be surrounded by those that can help get him there.

No one is criticizing him! He is really good and everyone agrees. His singing is powerful and emotive. However, from the standpoint of vocals and performance, there is room for improvement. Most professionals (in any field) work on their skills throughout their lives. So don’t mistake constructive criticism with criticism.

He captured the hearts of millions of people around the world. He definitely needs a great team around him now to keep growing and honing his skills. If you listened to his life story, it’s not just about losing his dad. They struggled financially like many people in Hawaiʻi, which is crazy expensive. This is why they had to pick up and leave their home. If there’s little money for essentials, there’s definitely no money for voice lessons. Maybe now he’ll have that chance. Go Iam!!

Iam tongi doesn't need powerful vocals, excessive runs, flashy clothes, nor exaggerated stage performances to give a touching and emotionally powered performance or a joyful one. There were several idol contestants who were vocal powerhouses, but their songs felt hollow. Although they were great singers, their performances didn't feel as genuine, and the songs didn't always match their personalities or life experiences. I for one was sick of country singers. May as well be called Country Idol instead of American Idol from the artists that have been turned out lately. We Ani and others who were not country were eliminated, except for Ian. Glad he got to play some Hawaiian influenced music. I love the island vibe and "Jawaiian" music that was performed. About time we heard something a little different and something not overly performed or technical. Sometimes people just want to hear music from the heart.

What I find interesting about Iam's performances is that your reaction is actually boring. It's not about belting the song, doing a run tricks with your vocals or wearing the best extravangant outfit for the performance you wear. It's how you deliver the song and connect with people. Anyone can sing. It's how you tell the story with the song. He's different from any other contestant and stayed true to himself. All throughout his journey, he wore slippers. He didn't need to impress anyone. He went to AI for his dad and he dedicated the song to his dad.

Winning is only half of the goal. The actual real goal is to become a successful commercial artist selling tonnes of songs and performing internationally as well as longevity plus a good legacy. The days of winners of AI such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have past. These days some of the "losers" can and have become more successful than most of AI winners just look at Jennifer Hudson (pop), Chris Daughtry (rock), Gabby Barrett (country), Kellie Pickler (country) and others. If Iam is smart he would broaden his vocal skills and become more versatile. There is nothing wrong with what he does now but a good singer or even a better artist has options.....quite plenty of them so they can mix things up with variety. For example Paul McCartney in his youth can sing like Iam in "Yesterday" and in "And I Love Her" but he can do other things as well such as in "Oh Darling". This business is extremely competitive and rewards those who work hard and improve their craft. Those who stay complacent very often withers away into obscurity although they may have had some great moments. The hard work begins now and smart career choices must be made to avoid being the flavor of the month only kinda artist.

@@TheProtestantPope well there was IZ Kamakawiwaole. Maybe you dont know him as an artist but I can bet you've heard his music in commercials and in several movies. He has passed away, but his voice was an instrument, and it lives on in his music. Many a talented singer has been forgotten as time passes, but that doesnt lessen their achievements, their work, nor how they touched their listeners. Plenty of youngsters don't know the artists I grew up on, but that doesn't diminish them in my eyes. It sounds like you are rooting for him to fail. No matter what lies in his future, at this point in time, he captured peoples hearts and accomplished a great feat. Getting people to notice a simple island boy with a great big heart and a tiny uke and parlor guitar. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Lol

When Iam Tongi sing, he sings with feeling of truthfulness with his heart without all the unnecessary fancy fluff where ordinary human beings can understand the beautiful feelings or groove of the story and the moment within themselves that just feels good. I don't understand why you can't feel the beauty of Iam Tongi Voice as it is! Maybe you rather hear the fluff instead of concentrating the true detail of what the song is about. The world can do with out of all the fluff (BS) that goes on through one's life daily. That why Iam Tongi is now officially crowned the 2023 American Idol. 🥰❤🤟🙏🎉🎊

The way you say Iam is the same and stands there with his big frame and sounds the same all the time. This is Iam, this is why we all love him and his voice, he sings from his heart. The type of music he sings fits his style. Some of the great artists like Paul Simon, or James Taylor they stand still also. Iam could sing a book to me and I would listen. I know your favorite is Megan Danielle, but Iam Tongi is the new 2023 American Idol. He’s only 18 years old and has done an excellent job. I watch all the reactions from other voice coaches and teachers that react to his songs and they are feeling it like we all do. @karismaperformingarts - your commentary bores me…. You are clearly not impressed by Iam Tongi and don’t understand why people are voting for him because his vocal performance doesn’t invigorate you. You are very clear about this in your thumbnail for this video (which is clickbait for sure). As a vocal coach, isn’t part of being a great singer having the ability to take you places? You enjoy Iam’s voice in the upper register but wouldn’t it be boring if he always sung up there? And wouldn’t that be confusing? The choices he makes of where to start and where to bring you and where to leave you off, isn’t that part of vocal artistry? And let’s say he were to be classically trained, don’t you think too much training takes away a singer’s instinct and authenticity? Rather than trying to advertise this video for clicks, maybe just say “not for me”? I think one thing to remember is that this is a competition and that contestants are asked to sing within the confines of what time or even theme allows them - they cannot add a verse you want to hear because you were bored with a verse you’ve already heard; they are trying to win your vote within the time allotted. One thing I really enjoyed about Iam is his song selection. Being from Hawaii, it would be easy for me to see Iam only choose Hawaiian/Polynesian/reggae tunes and stay in that vein but voters would get really bored. The songs he’s chosen throughout the competition were wisely selected and were unexpected considering his background - his song selection clearly shows taste and depth of music knowledge even at the age of 18. His rendition of “Winner Takes it All” was eye opening for me because at surface, I’d be hard pressed to believe anyone could really move someone with an Abba song that doesn’t normally have dance rhythm -- but there goes Iam putting his own vision and making it his own. Give credit where credit is due - don’t incite because you enjoy click numbers. By the way - all KZbin reactors should really thank AI and Iam Tongi because they’ve really drawn viewer numbers to otherwise lukewarm channel numbers. Just a thought

Yet the other singers sing high perfect notes BUT no connection. Pitch perfect doesn't mean beans when you don’t feel the words and meaning of the song. So, No. He does not need to get high notes to get a WOW effect. When he connects the emotions of the audience to the delivery of the song then that's PERFECT PITCH. When you sing worship songs, you are not performing, you are WORSHIPPING. Nothing to do with doing high falsettos and what not. It’s whats coming from the heart. What a dissapointing analysis! Being technical- doesn’t make the art … ….Art comes from the heart!… … Go Iam… if great singers like Lionel Ritchie / Katy and Luke believed and were moved by your art… an unknown vocal coach… 2 cent analysis is irrelevant!

Whats the point of a song if it doesnt connect with people? Most artist are using auto tune.. He won for a reason. And is loved for a reason. He doesnt have to be perfect. Look at jack johnson for example. Very consistent in his vocal range, and has absolutely killed it in the music industry. Its about feeling the music, not perfecting it. You cant teach that..

in a time where mumbling. screaming and autotune being mainstream. hearing this beautiful creation is something worthy of even debating if its boring?! This is island music. Do some homework if you can't pick up on the nuances in tone. Every single one of my Polynesian friends carried around ukuleles and would turn any scene into a jam session in a heartbeat, this is how islanders get down.

OTHER SINGERS MAY HAVE THE MOST OF THE TECHNIQUES BUT IF IT HAS NO SOULS THEN IT IS NOT MUSIC! IT'S A TRASH... THAT IS WHY IAM WON THE COMPETITION BECAUSE IAM HAS THAT SPIRITUAL GIFT WHICH OTHERS DON'T HAVE... AND THAT IS MORE THAN MUSIC... IT TOUCHES PEOPLE'S SOUL..

CGC Luckily, I've noticed that there are millions more positive comments everywhere about sweet as Iam Tongi and some of the people who write negative ones just enjoy upsetting other fellow humans! They're brave in a way though, because they'd know that they'll probably be inundated with fans who are out to get them, so to speak. 😊

Thank you sir for your analysis. You are a voice coach yes so what? ......IAM speaks to the soul of people when he sings and that alone is a feat that I don't think you will ever be able to achieve. The music the song, it's free, there is no limit as long as you manage to bring out the emotions. It's the man who puts limits in everything and that's why the mind is like this. IAM succeeded, he won because he went back to basics, that is to say, to bring people together and have a very pleasant time and above all to tell stories while singing .... to succeed in doing that, this is phenomenal!!!!! when you release a song I hope you will have so many views and fans and likes .... since you certainly remain within codes that must be respected. IAM has talent, no need to make notes that go beyond the sky to enter the codes that man establish...Tssssss.......finally Mr. don't see a heart to understand that what he sings does it come from the heart? .....I wish you good continuation in what you do and God bless you 🙏

Okay🤦🏾‍♂️ So ure telling me Lional Ritchie and Katy Perry thinks contrary to you and ure opinion is on point - okay🤦🏾‍♂️ This 18 yo kid has more bravery then u would have, when ure commenting from ure no name room. This kid tells the story right and it heals. I think the technical singing market is saturated and the world needs realness as oppose to acrobatical vocals with no soul, theres enough of that already.

What is training if you can't freestyle om? Overcoming boundaries, creativity, requires freestyle abiities... as well as training of course. So thanks for the constructive critcism for this amazing Braddah from Hawaii. If a song and a singer can't make the listener, smile, cry, feel... something within then... well... that's when freestyle gotta' give om that little bit extra...
