Remember hearing a very early interview with Kate she said she never liked the sound of her own voice but acknowledged the fact that she could sing perfectly in tune, naturally. I was one of the very lucky few to see her live in London on her first (and only) tour in 1976. For me, the highlights of the evening were 'The Warm Room' and 'Oh England, my Lionheart' where it was just Kate and her piano without the band. Words would not be adequate for how incredible she sounded, it actually brought tears to your eye's.

Kate was singing as the ghost of Catherine Earnshaw and deliberately pitched her voice at an 'ethereal' level. She had a very full range at this age - three full octaves at least.

I give up on trying to sing it with my flat, boring, non-technical voice, I'll just watch her singing and will feed my soul with every flavoured note she sings in an angelic/ghostly way!

The ghost is described as a child and a waif so its voice would be high. "As it spoke, I discerned, obscurely, a child’s face looking through the window. Terror made me cruel; and, finding it useless to attempt shaking the creature off, I pulled its wrist on to the broken pane, and rubbed it to and fro till the blood ran down and soaked the bedclothes: still it wailed, “Let me in!” and maintained its tenacious gripe, almost maddening me with fear." The full passage is below.

Thing is cutting through any technical aspects of her voice she may or not have used what comes through is her the tonality/timbre/sound of her voice and her emotion. Not heard any person sing this song as a cover who sounds anything like Kate Bush. It is very vocally unique.

I have loved that song since I first saw Kate Bush singing on Top Of The Pops when I was in my teens.... firstly because Wuthering Heights is my favourite novel and secondly someone was singing a pop song in a key I could sing along to!! I still am happiest in high head voice......

This was one of those Top of the Pops moments for me, seeing and hearing this at the tender age of 10 and remembering hearing it constantly throughout the summer of '78. Similar thing happened with Boy George for the first time in '82. Both very very unique and original.

The 'vocal coach' seems to underestimate the power of Kate's voice, and is overlooking that she's singing the part of the ghost of Cathy from the novel. A young female ghost (Cathy was very young when she died in childbirth) would probably have a high-pitched ethereal voice.

I read that Kate wasn't allowed to be accompanied by her own band and she was ill while she's performing. Later she said "It was like watching myself die. It was a bloody awful performance."

Outstanding dissection of Kate Bush's vocals in this classic song. If I were a singer, the world is better off I'm not, Freya would be a wonderful asset to anyone wishing to fulfill their potential. Kate is a global treasure, the kind of performer that appears every fifty years or so. A big wow!!

I started listening her songs by mistake. Many years ago I was looking in music store for a tape with vocalist I just heard ones and no see but I wanted more (there was no KZbin then😂)so I was guessing 😅. Later I discovered that I was looking for Jennifer Rush and landed home with Kate Bush 😂.I was so shocked and firstly I wanted go back and get my money back but somehow I couldn’t and was listening and listening and then I saw on “MTV most wanted”her

She is amazing! I've sung this song many times. It's in A maj. She has a little tremolo in her voice in the live version, but I don't think this is a signnof instability. I think this is her unique style. Like you said, she is at the beginning of her career here. She would go on to produce incredible work and her voice has matured so beautifully. Thank you for this Freya 😚
