Welcome!
This react is to Black Pink's new return song How You Like That! Be warned I do tangent a tad in this react because there is something about pop music I've always wanted to talk about related to expectations from recorded tracks into live performances.
If you liked this react and want more then more videos are just a subscribe and a bell notification away!
Suggestions and recommendations in the comment section are always welcome and feel free to reach out through insta as well @jvoxfox
and if you're interested vocal assessments and lessons enquiries can be done through my website www.jvoxstudio.com

What you said about Lisa is so accurate though! She just has something that makes her so interesting to watch, she has that natural level of confidence; and looking back at old dance videos she's had it for a long time just improved it over time. Not that all of them aren't impressive just for being talented enough combined to carry a comparatively small group in a highly competitive and stressful industry. They're absolutely my favorite K-pop group.

Hey guys! This song absolutely bops. While How You Like That is hardly going to lay out some monster vocals there is still a lot to consider when breaking down pop performances. A lot of people might be expecting me to eviscerate the vocals in this track because the song is a basic pop-bop. But it being a fun, savage, dance track is ultimately why the vocals they use are suitable. Hope you liked the video, I think we can all prepare to hear this song A LOT over the coming weeks. p.s when I mention that the live vocals and the track have been blended this ISN'T all the time and you can clearly hear their live vocals. Additionally there are times when it isn't blended with the track and instead there is FX put on the voice (I didn't mention that in this video). Also, I think their live vocals are absolutely steady and that it sounding like 'them' and not an overly produced, electronically perfected sound contributes to the connection in a live performance so I personally don't mind pop singers sounding human :)

Julia Nilon thank you for reacting to this (along with your other videos.) I was a bit surprised that you chose this song to react to since there aren’t any super, monster vocals in it but there are still things to analyze and appreciate for what they are. You’re one of my favorite music-based, vocal coach reactors! So keep up the excellent content!

Distinct voices is voice tone/color/timbre. Usually, many people judge the voice tone because they do not understand of vocal technique. Voice tone is subjective and vocal technique is objective. Vocal coach should react and explain to the vocal technique.

It's common knowledge among k-pop listeners that they will have mixed between a backtrack and live singing simply because they have to dance as well. However, there are some groups who just perform not live most of the time. There are groups that perform with the backtrack/MR really high, medium or low depending on the performance and sometimes they do not have the choice. For example, if they perform at award shows almost ALL groups will perform with the MR really high. If they perform on music shows, it depends on what program they are performing for the percentages of the MR. I personally like the fact that you can hear the distinction between the MR and live singing because it tells you that they are actually singing.

Not only are there backing tracks from the original studio recordings, but they also have augmented live vocals, most likely from previous performances. I love that you attempted to destigmatized this. People have no idea how much is pre and post produced in a performance like this. And it’s totally okay! The end result justifies everything else.

So glad that you liked it. Thanks so much for your reaction. Keep in mind that these girls have to keep a high standard of not just vocals when on stage but, aesthetics and dance. This is very difficult. Blackpink always sing live so it’s pretty obvious that they would have a backing track to assist due to dancing. I would love to see someone try to sing live and dance the way they do without a backing track 😂. Anyway, this is my first vid that I’ve seen you react to and truly appreciate your comments and support towards Blackpink. You did an excellent job. I look forward to more BP reactions in the future. Other than that, I’d love if you would react to another girl group with INCREDIBLE live vocals called Dreamcatcher. Their choreo is very intensive yet they manage to have very stable vocals and can hit some impressive high notes. One example of this is their live performance of their latest song BOCA. You should check out the unhelpful guide to blackpink 2019 version it's very helpful lmao So three of them are fluent in english and other one also understands it and learning more -Jisoo is the oldest(1995) and Lead vocalist with a deeper, huskier tone, she is the brunette and still learning english -Jennie(1996) also Lead vocalist and Main rapper, she lived in new zealand for 5 years so very fluent in english, she is the one with brown/blonde mixed hair -Rosè(1997) Main vocalist with a unique and soft voice and Lead dancer, grew up in australia so veery fluent, she is the one with grey/bluish hair -Lisa(1997) Main dancer, Lead rapper and Sub vocalist, she is the one who rapped in this song. She is thai and came to korea at the age of 14-15 i guess. (Main>Lead>sub, these positions mostly determine who'll sing what parts like main vocalist usually have more singing lines than the lead vocalists etc.)

FYI (FACT) : BLACKPINK HAVE 2 RAPPER 2 VOCALIST : JENNIE is MAIN RAPPER (1st Rapper) because she can rap really really fast more than super cars but she can sing very well like a DIVA. LISA is LEAD RAPPER (2nd Rapper) her Raps style more modern style like nicki minaj or cardi B but she is main Dancer , She is the dancing machine in BLACKPINK ROSE is MAIN VOCALIST (1st Vocalist) the Real DIVA and Lead Dancer (2nd Dancer) JISOO is Lead Vocalist (2nd Vocalist) and Main Visual (The Most Beuatiful Standard Korean Women) people called her MISS KOREA because of her Beauty and attitude. But some people who is only favoritsm (bias) to 1 member on the group not 4 member always claim and switch the fact , the most fans from South East Asia. because of that i don't like them. I just like BLINK who always said the truth about 4 member and love all of them. If you want to know why Jennie is Main Rapper..look their MV in Du Ddu Du Ddu.

Different groups have different strength. Blackpink is known for their amazing bop and catchy songs, but not so much on their vocals. This song is definitely gonna be huge, no question about that. I also agree with your statement. Btw speaking about vocals, there are quite some groups that used full-playback when performing on stage. It means that they're not really singing live, well maybe the ad-libs were live but the rest was on full-playback (of course it's not their fault, it's more on the stage production crew setting). The thing is you can always adjust the loudness of the playback to some degree of different level depend to your liking. Of course I know that it's very hard to sing especially in the heavy dance break part, it's a common sense. The playback for sure really helping these groups a lot because they can still do their choreography without have to worry too much about their singing voice. On the other hand, if you look at the vocal based groups which their purpose is to showcase their monster vocals skills (even though in some special cases they also used playback but their vocals are way louder than the playback itself), it's more of a disadvantage than an advantage to them. Why?? Because you hear every little differences to the playback so you have to sing that note perfectly and that's crazy. Sorry for the long explanation here, in short story, I don't mind when groups doing lip-sync on stage or singing quietly under the playback and also no shading on Blackpink either, but personally I prefer and have more respect towards the vocal based groups that are really singing live "live". Again it's just my own preference, I'm just a sucker for beautiful voices. Of course I can't force other people to have the exact same preference like me. Everybody has different taste and I appreciate that.

Also - they most likely weren't dancing when they recorded the tracks for the song. Obvious, yes, but it should still be noted. Nobody is going to sound like the studio version with choreo this demanding - and they only have 4 members to carry the vocals and the dancing so there's no where to hide or rest.

Something I always wonder about Korean groups... why many of their songs there are parts in English? I don't know if it's a matter of style, preference or just to make it sound "more international", since they have fans worldwide.
@jvoxfox

I feel that it depends on the group but also apparently there are a lot of English words that have wormed their way into the spoken Korean language so it perhaps isn't as strange for them to hear English in their songs? I'm not 100% sure but I think it'll land well internationally because of the English for sure. It also helps that quite a few members of Black Pink speak English quite well so they're able to do international interviews etc with a bit more ease.

Big K-pop groups such as Blackpink have HUGE fanbases in other parts of Asia and worldwide. The English lyrics are definitely written intentionally to appeal to the international audiences (since most of them understand simple English phrases, even if English is not their first language).

It seems like it’s a bit of all that’s been said. There’s quite a bit of English in everyday Korean. In fact a lot of Koreans (especially the younger gens) would find it hard to speak just straight Korean. Western culture is pretty influential in Korean culture as well (I believe stemming from the Korean War.) Kpop has been using English words and phrases even before it exploded globally but I believe it’s even more prevalent now. It helps get in touch with the international fanbase even more so and they use it to their advantage I suppose. There are even a few songs completely in English released by Kpop groups! Blackpink themselves have members who are from Australia and New Zealand so that helps but there are groups with only Korean speakers and they have English in their music. I think it’s quite a bit of everything put together.

Thank you so much for reaching to this! 💕 By the way, if you want to actually listen to their vocals better you could listen to their cover for 'Sure Thing' by Miguel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWi3fp-rfburars There's no track in there, it's just them completely singing live :)

Hi Julia, love your Nightwish reactions. I have something different though. Being Canadian, I would love to see you react to Canadian band Unleash the Archers, the song Awake. Thanks, that would be amazing

It's interesting the differences :) I personally love live performances because I feel like it's a little more "human" and the capacity for connection is there. Sometimes production can make something so 'perfect' that the human element is lost. Regardless this song is a total bop and I enjoyed both the live and the MV.

If you think that in no way can a pop singer singing live can sound like the produced track...you need to react to Taeyeon singing live. You're ears will thank me :)
