This song is about an experience bassist Geezer Butler had. This is his words about it. "I'd been raised a Catholic so I totally believed in the Devil. There was a weekly magazine called Man, Myth and Magic that I started reading which was all about Satan and stuff. That and books by Aleister Crowley and Dennis Wheatley, especially The Devil Rides Out ... I'd moved into this flat I'd painted black with inverted crosses everywhere. Ozzy gave me this 16th Century book about magic that he'd stolen from somewhere. I put it in the airing cupboard because I wasn't sure about it. Later that night I woke up and saw this black shadow at the end of the bed. It was a horrible presence that frightened the life out of me! I ran to the airing cupboard to throw the book out, but the book had disappeared. After that I gave up all that stuff. It scared me shitless."

I am only slightly older than this album, and it has arguably aged better than me. And will no doubt outlive me. I am content to have been alive to witness this masterpiece.

The live 1970 version in Paris is easily the best performance of the song and one of the best live performances of the band

Yup, that whole gig is bone-crushing. Bill Ward is on fire, as is the rest of the band.

If you freeze the video at 8:55 (or in most spots during Tony's solo), you'll notice that the tips of his two middle fingers are different in colour. When he was learning to play the guitar, a workplace accident saw him lose the tips of his middle fingers; however, not wanting to give up said instrument, Tony created false fingertips by melting/shaping plastic into workable fingertips by which he fastened my some means (later, and with more money, he'd have proper tips made that he could put on/remove at will). He, then, down tuned his guitar to increase the action on the fret board so that he could better 'feel' the strings, which is how Sabbath got their ominous sound. Also, Sabbath were not the first band to play 'heavier' music like this; they were, however, the first to formalize it as a style. There's a KZbin video called 'The 50 Heaviest Songs Before Black Sabbath,' which will show you the antecedents/origins/development of their style. A great review! Best! J

First Song from the first Sabbath Album was the birth of Heavy Metal because here the rock genre is specifically used to embody the 'Evil'! Not only the name 'Black Sabbath' should underline that, also the beginning with the 'tritone of the devil' interval stands for this! In the typical story about the tritone, many people believed that this interval had such an unpleasant sound that the people of the Middle Ages considered the tritone to be a "work of the devil." Although the band's style is actually hard rock, today it would definitely pass for Doom Metal. Black Sabbath is not only referred to as the absolute King in this sub-genre. EVERY Metalhead falls in the dust in humiliation in front of this masterpiece! 🤘😈🤘

My parents had this album and when i was kid I would scare myself to death with it. I had a turntable as soon as I was old enough to operate one. When it was bed time I would listen to this on headphone in the dark with a little flashlight checking out the cover, pictures on the record sleeve and liner notes. I remember Ozzy spelled his name Ossie Osbourne on that album. Then I came across my parents Bob Marley albums and I headed in a different direction.

What happened there? Weird editing...hope you're going to re-upload with the FULL SONG? How can 11 people (at the moment) give this a like when half the song is missing?

Ozzy may not be the most powerful metal vocalist ever, But he definitely has the most unique, haunting, Iconic voice in metal history.

I'm missing the start of the song. The version you've watched is a edited video with the live pictures from the consert in Paris and I'm pretty sure also the sound is recorded at that moment. There are a non editet live video at this song and also the whole consert.

This is the first Doom Metal song. Pretty much any sub-genre of metal can be traced back to a Black Sabbath song.

Interesting that this is actually re-recorded, the vocals are slightly different in th3 album version, solo seems also slighly different. I wonder why they re-recorded, so that video matches perfecly with the singing?
