i just read that tony iommi said that ward for first five years or so being in sabbath used broken drum sticks which was why he used them backwards. he learned to play with broken sticks so he kept doing it stubbornly for a while even after he could afford new ones.

That was such a powerful performance by all of them. They are monster players but Bill Ward was beating those drums like they killed his dog. They are the Godfathers of Metal, The Architects of heavy. No band will ever come along that will create a new genre of music like they did.

Thanks, Ken for a great month of metal! The bassist Geezer Butler originally wrote this song to be the title track for the album, which they intended to be named "Walpurgis", a Christianized pagan holiday (you can research the history). Geezer commented that "Walpurgis is like a Satanic Christmas. I believe there is nothing more Satanic than war." The original lyrics were much darker. Their label felt that the album name was too dark and occultic, even for Black Sabbath, if you can imagine that. So the album was renamed "Paranoid" and Geezer rewrote the lyrics of the song and titled it "War Pigs". In this performance Ozzy sang some of the lyrics from the original "Walpurgis" either by accident or intent.

the two mic taped together thing is to eliminate feedback, as monitor systems were in their infancy (if they were used at all), and most times there was either the PA on its own, or very large sidewash systems. if you look at old footage of the stones, mick can be seen using this technique

I think Ozzy's been messing with everyone's mind all these years, as far as I see it. It makes perfect sense that, when he sings, he's always fully articulate. Conversations or talk just bore him and you can hear in how lazy he is with his speech. Maybe he's got issues with other types of stimulation which lessen his ability to function "normally", but when he's in the music, he's himself, and what a joy it's been to have Ozzy and this band as a part of our life experience. All the world's a stage and we are merely players. Some play amazingly well. Thanks Ken.

Saw Sabbath in the early 70's, when I was around 15/16 yo - they were awesome! Back then venues and bands didn't have the techno wizardry available today so all kinds of tricks were employed to get the effects they wanted, cut feedback etc. so that's probably why the 2 mics were used. Funny that Ozzy was never very clear when talking but came to life and made himself VERY clear when singing!

The two microphones wasn't about effects. Back then PAs sucked, and feedback was even more of an issue than it is these days, plus EQing stuff was both often really limited and very tough to get right and not have everything muddy. The two mics offer a way to, one, get an extra channel to the PA to get more volume, two, to have two separate tracks to eq differently (lots of options and routes there), and three, you could have the mic good for bass and a mic good for treble and have more control to avoid either end of hte feedback spectrum. There's probably other reasons I don't know about, but this was a very common choice for big gigs in those days, you can see it in many live performance recordings like this one of lots of the biggest bands.

Arguably, you can say this is where it all began for Metal. I’d say this song and a few before it’s time and around its time, song like Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” and Iron Butterflies “In A Gadda Da Vida” along with this song and others brought Metal to life.🤘🏼

2 microphones...one for the PA the other for recording. Flipping the sticks is a time honoured way of making the drums fatter. And observe the two prostetic fingertips on Tony (lost at the last day of his day job!)... One major factor in the development of their sound, tuning down made it easier to play.

Those two microphones are because it's being recorded. So one is for recording and the other one for the PA. At that time recording from a PA was not really possible. The Grateful Dead used two microphones for noise cancelling. Sabbath did not use this technique as shown by photos from live shows. These never show two mikes.

3 weeks before Black Sabbath went on tour, Tony had an accident at the steel mill he worked at cutting off the tips of two of his fingers on his fret hand. So he fashioned fingertips out of an old leather jacket, this is one of the best videos to notice those fake fingertips. This gives his guitar playing a unique sound.

These guys just really really wanted to play to overcome the obstacles in front of them

thx Ken, u are my man. Of course, this is "beginning".. 🤘🤘🤘 Master level live performance. Do you know why this? Ozzy squeaky voice, Bill 4 drums max. Tommy (sorry Tommy) without 2 fingers, bass player - monster of bass. But all together - great enthusiasm, passion, willingness. Such a small difference between them and many bands today. Exactly the opposite. 27 drums, 7 string-bass, 12-string guitar, and? Nothing, wall of tones. F***-all 🤣🤣 Let me just add that for me personally, Bill Ward was the model for creating the character "The Animal" from "The Muppet Show" which I always watched... LOL

This is a hybrid of the original version of the song, Walpurgis, and what was released after the forced re-write. I always wondered the story about this. Was ozzy messing. Ronnie's my favorite and love the BS Era with Ronnie, but I have to go with Ozzy with his songs. In my mind there was two important eras of BS, the Ozzy era that was so raw and powerful and the Dio era where it moved the band into a refined and better sounding group. The two exists and should be appreciated for what they were at the time. Personally I like the Dio era better than the Ozzy era, but only by a small fraction since both are outstanding.
