Dan had ten years of training. My only complaint is a minor one. Please 🙏 always play the full outros on the songs that have them, not so much for us long-time members of Vasc-Nation, but for the new fans. They are insights into Dan himself and/or the song. Other than cutting that off, really good reaction! Keep them coming!

Dan says he started singing before he could speak. Later, when he was getting out of the Army, he heard the Christian metal band Petra (I believe the album was Jekyll and Hyde) and decided he wanted to sing like that. So, he began voice lessons, which he continued for at least ten years. As a vocal coach, you might be interested in his very first video, a Dragonforce audition, done at the tender age of 20. (It's still on his channel.) In Dan's words, "It sucks." But comparing that performance to his current videos is a perfect illustration of how far one's voice can come with proper training and tons of hard work.

Hi Ken, the song Scarborough Fair is traditional, no one knows who wrote it, but the Canticle was written by Paul Simon and added to their version, known as Scarborough Fair / Canticle. This is the counter melody which Art sings over the traditional melody, and I believe it is a protest against war. I love this version, very faithful to the S&G version ❤

The famous melody was collected from Mark Anderson (1874-1953), a retired lead miner from Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, England, by Ewan MacColl in 1947. The lyrics appear to have something in common with a Scottish ballad titled "The Elfin Knight", collected by Francis James Child as Child Ballad #2, which has been traced as far back as 1670. The version used by Simon & Garfunkel came from MacColl who recorded the lyrics and melody in a book of Teesdale folk songs, and later included it on his and Peggy Seeger's "The Singing Island" (1960) [Wikipedia] The actual "Fair in Scarborough" originated from a royal charter granted by King Henry III of England on 22 January 1253.

Taken from East Bay Times: " In medieval times, there was an annual multi-week festival in which merchants and tradesmen exchanged their goods in the town of Scarborough on England’s eastern coast. The event attracted people from across the British Isles. Many songs were written to commemorate the event but today only a few remain. In the early’60s, British folk singer Martin Carthy began performing a version of one of these songs that he called “Scarborough Fair.” While recording his second album, 1963’s “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” Bob Dylan traveled to England and befriended Carthy. It was this encounter that led Dylan to take two lines from “Scarborough Fair” (“remember me to one who lives there, she was once a true love of mine”) and incorporate them into “Girl from the North Country.” A few years later, Paul Simon ventured to England to immerse himself in the emerging folk scene and, like Dylan before him, met Martin Carthy. However, Simon took Martin’s arrangement of “Scarborough Fair,” added a section from one of his earlier songs called “The Side of a Hill,” and created “Scarborough Fair/Canticle.” The song, credited to Simon and Garfunkel, became a hit after it was used in the 1967 film “The Graduate.” For years afterward, Carthy was angered by the fact that Simon took credit for writing what he considered to be a traditional ballad. As the years passed, his anger subsided, and he even agreed to perform the song with Simon in a triumphant 2000 concert." For those that don't know - Johnny Cash joined Dylan on the Album, to sing Girl from the North Country...

This is one of Dan's earlier videos, so he is much younger and you can hear how he progresses and gets better with time - though he is has always been so great! His native language is Portuguese so I'm guessing this may have played a part in his earlier songs. Dan took lessons and wanted to train to do heavy metal. As you know he is a fantastic singer and worked very hard to get so good. Check out his harmonies on his cover of 'Africa'. He made comments that he had so much fun doing the harmonies in that song. As he developed his channel, he records songs a minimum of 3 times for different camera angles then does the mixing himself. His studio was his garage which makes it all more impressive. Love his performances. Thanks for reacting to this one. Truly beautiful!!

Dan is classically trained. but putting that aside, he has, in my opinion, something that cannot be taught - an innate gift for 'performance'. By that I mean, the ability to put body, heart and soul into every performance. Well, not only the ability, but the need to do so - that drive toward excellence. He is a wonder to me. And if you listen to the ends of his videos, you will see he is that rarest of enormously gifted performers, humble. It is such a joy to follow his progress. Please take a look at his performance of Nessun Dorma. Oh lord, it is gorgeous.

One of the issues I find with a lot of the vocal coaches who do reactions is they tend to get caught up in the "technically perfect" or "most efficient/healthy". While it's important to know how to sing healthily, and to have good technique, the artistry aspect of singing is also knowing when to break those rules while understanding the consequences of doing so and weighting the cost against the gain in musicality. If someone sings 100% perfectly healthy with flawless technique, their performances would be bland, for the sake or artistry they elect to eschew some elements of technique for effect. You talk about how tone should ideally stay similar across the range, and present the idea that his tone changes when he gets higher or lower as a flaw, albeit a small one. We can't know for certain, but Dan has had over a decade of professional training and has been singing on his own before that since he was a kid, so there's a very good chance the change in tone was to some degree an intentional choice. In other songs I've heard him go that low with various different tones depending on the mood of the piece, and similar with his upper range he's shown the ability to make it weighty and belting, masked, perfectly mixed, and light and soft and many in between, so I do not doubt he could have hit those notes with a different tone if he desired to do so.

Another excellent reaction, Ken. If you're looking for Dan's most emotional cover, it's probably Son of Pain. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iISnomyQaL-Hp5Y One thing to keep in mind with Dan is that not only has he built his career so far on covers, which demands some versatility, but he idolizes singers like Eric Adams and Fabio Lione, that have 4 or 5 voices at their disposal and can weave between them backwards and forwards.

"Scarborough Fair" é uma canção tradicional inglesa de autoria desconhecida. A canção teve muitos intérpretes e versões, sendo as mais destacadas a gravação feita pela dupla Simon & Garfunkel e a versão do grupo irlandês Celtic Woman. O nome Scarborough Fair é uma referência à feira de Scarborough, que na idade média, era um dos maiores pontos de referência comercial de toda Inglaterra, com um enorme mercado que se prolongava durante 45 dias a partir de 15 de agosto.

Scarboro faire is a very old english folk song. This version is same as Simon and garfunkels version which is actually a mashup of two songs woven around each other. Im not sure of the name of the other but think it may be Canticle, another very old folk song. Edited to add, it's not Canticle. Sorry don't know it's name. Edited again ... the name of the canticle is On The Side Of A Hill, a war protest song written by Paul Simon. 😊

Every single day you don't react to Cem Adrian's Summertime video is a day lost man.

I don't like how these reactions don't even allow the song to get started before they start putting in their two cents.

Only Simon and Garfunkel can ever do that song perfectly. No offense! I love Dan but when it comes to Simon and Garfunkel songs, please, nobody can touch them. Garfunkel's crystal clear over-enunciated words plus his angelic voice.... Ditto for Bridge Over Troubled Waters

>tfw Dan is better musically trained and an infinitely better singer than ken will ever be while he tries to self fellate on his channel This is a grim look for Ken.
