Lisa Gerrard and Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) are my favorite vocalists. I've been listening to the Cocteau Twins since 1984. I was in an independent record store on a weekday morning (I was the only customer) when the clerk played their Treasure album - he knew I would like it. That morning I bought every LP & EP they released up to that point. A year or so later I was working in a record store (a chain store) putting prices on merchandise & there was a record from the 4AD label in the shipment. I used my lunch money to buy that record, it was This Mortal Coil's It Will End in Tears, a kind of 4AD project album, the first of three albums released by This Mortal Coil. It featured Dead Can Dance as well as other artists on the 4AD label. I actually wrote down the names of all of the artists on that album, went back to the independent record store and bought all of the LPs and EPs that I could find by these artists. That is how I discovered Dead Can Dance and then introduced my friends to their music. Brendan Perry of DCD also has an amazing voice. I felt that discovering Liz, Lisa & Brendan was a blessing! I am so glad that Lisa is getting more recognition for her amazing, angelic, mesmerizing vocals - even after listening to her for 36 years I still get goosebumps and am taken to another, higher, plane of consciousness when she sings.

Lisa Gerrard said numerous times, that she got the inspiration for her singing style from The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices (bulgarian female folklore choir). 2-3 years ago she finally got to make a record with them, a long time dream of hers. Of course she combined this singing technique with bunch of others and that's why she is a unique singer.

Lisa Gerrard is one of my favourite singers if not THE favourite. She didn't have a single vocal lesson, but she's so damn good. I would recommend Host of Seraphim, one of their greatest pieces or Cantara (from the same concert) if you want to see more agressive side of her and some higher notes. But she's mostly known for stunning low notes and one of the best performances is Sacrifice. Check it out!

I got into the music of DCD with their 1st release, in 1984. They are one of only 3 recording artist where, IMO, every release they put out was great. One of the others, who were contemporaries of DCD, but preceded them, was a band from Grangemouth called Cocteau Twins. I'm pretty sure that Lisa Garrard was influenced by Cocteau Twins vocalist, Elizabeth Fraser, who I consider to be the greatest vocalist to ever open their mouth to sing. Like DCD, everything that Cocteau Twins released was ethereal perfection. Having said that, I'm partial to their earlier to mid period releases (from when they were on 4AD records). I think Cocteau Twins had something to do with DCD getting signed to 4AD as well. I wouldn't mind seeing what you think of Cocteau Twins vocalist, Elizabeth Fraser doing their song 'Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops'.

One thing that isn't obvious from this video is that she sings this song at a specific point in a DCD show. The impact of the synths and vocals is more impactful after the songs that come before it which is much more rhythmic.

I have projective chromesthesia; when I hear some music I can see it. Lisa’s songs from Dead Can Dance always induces it; but Brendan’s songs didn’t. Elizabeth Fraser’s “glossolalie” singing in Cocteau Twins induces it too. It wasn’t until I started listening to Stereolab that I realized my synesthesia only happens when I am not hearing words in a language I know. Hence; Stereolabs songs sung in English-nothing. Sung in French-I get synesthesia. That’s why I didn’t get it with Brendans songs-he sings in English. Two other singers who induce it-Yma Sumac and Yoko Ono! I love Brazilian music, and any language I don’t understand. It’s like having a music visualizer program in your eyes and brain.

A lot of what Liz sings is actually in English too, though, she just twists the syllables and pronunciations hard when she wants to hide the words... listen to Frosty the Snowman or Winter Wonderland for examples of songs with known lyrics so you can hear how she twists them, ESPECIALLY Frosty, she goes hard on that one. And then there are songs that make no sense but people find out are her reading off a list of Latin names of butterfly species, lol. (Melonella). But I am certainly going to recommend that he react to some CT....

Comparable in sound, though her lyrics tend to be more English based, is Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins - she tends to take English words, stress different syllables and then even twist those tonally so that they are almost unrecognizable. They don't have any official live videos, but good ones to react to out there include: a performance of Orange Appled from 1991 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5DTiJJjiLadkJY Tishbite from 1996 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2TJh3SGabGXjLc Seekers who are Lovers from 1996 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5ilgIqnndd6eJo Carolyn's Fingers from 1994 (She was in a truly experimental phase in 1994, nothing sounded really even close to the album versions, she was trilling away like a songbird) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpLIiX6Dpst_iJI Speaking of 1994, this was their first appearance on US TV, on the big chin guy's show - this song, believe it or not, was one of their first songs to have the most legible English lyrics, and was even captioned on the broadcast back then, based on the VHS of the music video which had captions... but at some point it just gave up and said "unintelligible vocalization" or something like that, lol - you will get what I mean, you can actually see the real lyrics for it online, but here is the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGXEo6GBa795mc0
