Matt Corby is an Australian icon. I think one of our best artists and possibly one of the best world wide. His range of vocals, his song writing, his instrumental talent and ability to play countless instruments. I’ve seen him live a few times and he performs with no shoes on and has to stand more than a metre away from the microphone during songs like this because his voice is so loud and powerful. He is astonishing. You should give his Triple J cover of “Chains” a listen too and his original track “Monday”.

I gave the biggest smile when you said "He's got everything, hasn't he? The agility, control, technique, the tone. What is there left to do?". You had no idea what was coming! Also, LOVE that you're reacting to Australian artists. We have some very talented singers down here!
@simonryan88583 жыл бұрын
I love it when people discover Australian artists. I believe their voices & styles often reflect Australian culture with its diversity and infancy in style. Not necessarily going against the grain of modern styles but also not really fully matching up either. Which I think is the reason a lot of these songs area years old but would still get a current audience and following if they had the same backing as those overseas
@davehocking40913 жыл бұрын
Totally agree mate. To add to that we have our own way of doing things down under and some of our music is very 'funky' in non-mainstream ways. Matt is super traditional, but completely unique... which is kinda the aussie way.

I was lucky enough to live in the same area as Matt post Australian Idol and he used to play as the house band at a local pub nearby. Saw him turn from a 15 year old kid with a fringe. Into the talent he is today and not with raw talent. But with hard work and commitment. I used to wonder to myself "Can you imagine being one of the people who used to go to Sin-é when Jeff Buckley would play" i kind of feel like i know how they felt. Can you imagine if he had of actually won Australian Idol. The world probably never would have got this song.

yep!! I remember the first time i heard him sing. He was 14 years old at a family reunion in a country NSW (Australia) town. He sang a few songs while the rest of the very large extended family ate dinner, in a large hall. He wanted to practice singing in front of a large crowd. I had never heard my entire extended family silent before, but we were all stunned at the quality of the singing and playing. One guitar, one voice and his sister as backing vocals. Pretty much the same reaction as you in this video. Since that JJJ performance, the one in this video, he has actually gotten so much better. His voice is stronger, he is more experienced, and there are no words to describe his creativity and musical talent. If he wasnt family he would still be my favourite artist. I can only suggest that if you have any opportunity to see him live, move heaven and earth to do so. What is scary is that he is still so young. Remember Madonna when she first started to what she is now? Santana ? Michael Jackson? Springsteen? Elvis? U2? Bob Dylan, Prince. I know there are many many more I havent mentioned that deserve to be but the point is, whoever they are, what were they at the beginning compared to their greatest performance? Now imagine what this guy is going to be like in the future.

At age 16, Matt Corby auditioned for the 5th season of Australian Idol in 2007 where he finished as runner-up! I'm in Texas, USA and I'm probably one of the few Americans that actually got to see Australian Idol, I always downloaded the episodes with Bit-Torrent at the time. I loved the show and I really liked Matt a lot, he was my favorite and what a talent. I'm really glad he's still around and in the business doing what he does best! Thanks for posting this video Nina, a very pleasant surprise indeed.

Every Friday morning, we here in Australia are lucky enough to get 2 songs from a touring artist/band. Our national radio station Triple J host’s a live performance in their studios. The artist/band perform one of their own songs and then they do what’s called “like a version”. The artist/band will have chosen another song from anyone else and give us their version of said song. Gems are so often created Triple J create and sell the top tracks on an album every year called “Like a Version”.

I'm 22. When I was like 12/13 I used to replay this song on my phone like every single day. I think I must've heard it on the radio one day, or tv, I can't remember. It's quite a depressing yet expressive song and I connected to it emotively. I felt "seen" because I was very depressive back then in a way that felt very isolating. Today was my first time searching it up to see the face behind the voice. I didn't expect him to be so young. He's truly very in-tune with his voice. I was just watching you and saying to myself "You're in for a surprise" 😂 Loved this video reaction. God bless you in Jesus name.

Matt was treated really poorly by Australia has talent's staff and coaches, also the media really messed him up. At one point he was told behind scenes he had no future in mainstream music. The kid was 16 and came runner up in the fifth season, 2007. He stopped music for a few years after that until the burn got so hard to ignore he started writing and recording again. Thank god he did because he is an absolutely beautiful person inside and out and the music he creates is up there with the best! He also spent years doing concerts for people in their backyards for birthdays and other parties purely because he is an absolute legend!
