I mean, they do seem to use reverb. Which, granted, is pretty standard for a capella groups generally. Also, they used a megaphone to achieve a distortion effect for the guitar solo in Bohemian Rhapsody. But they didn't hide that; they showcased it.

Not a fan of this version simply because of the drums. Apparently they were there because the TV show's producer insisted on it. All they did was get in the way IMO. Pentatonix DOES NOT NEED additional musicians of any type to augment their performances.

@@aaronbarlow4376 I'm pretty sure Kirstin adapts some of the vocal changes from the Disturbed cover in her solo, and, no need to be so gross ab the Disturbed version. I get people don't like it because it's not "true" to the original message/vibe of the song but, if it was you'd call it a boring copycat cover. David Draiman is a remarkable vocalist, better than Paul/Art. Of course Paul and Art are the superior writers for coming up w the song in the first place, but sheesh, credit where credit is due. This IS vocal coach KZbin, not music nerd/songwriting KZbin.

Check out their version of "Gold" by Kiara. I'm not big at all on the original because there's a lot of electronic sounds in lieu of singing and musical notes. But PTX does it live around a mic, sitting in chairs, with Mitch singing the lead & electronic sounds! And when they start passing the lead around between them one note & word at a time, we'll...... You just need to watch it. (Many, if not most, of their early KZbin videos were recorded live, in their apartment, sitting on the couch with only 1 or 2 mics. Check them out!)

One of the things the judges commented on at the very start of their career on the Sing-Off a cappella competition, was how well they held back to blend their voices. Don't forget, Mitch, Kirstie and Scott have been doing this together since they were 8 and 10 years old. They know each other so well, and work so hard at their craft... this is what that kind of dedication can produce. Great reaction! Would love to hear your reaction to their cover of Kiiara's "Gold." It's an early one with Avi, and contains stunning vocal acrobatics.

Your right, Kirsten's voice absolutely pops. If you watch some of their early recordings, that wasn't really the case. Her voice has always stood out but she was used on solo's very sparingly in the early years. Any recording that the group would have done would not have included the drums, so yes I think it was live. I have seen them live several times and they are always so good.

They're just that good. I think it was live becaus it was a tiiiiny bit off at some points and in studio they usually correct things like that. e.g. Mitch singing "sound" at 3:13 is a little bit wobbly before he catches it and the downwards run at 8:22 didn't start in sync.
@DavidTateVA
@DavidTateVA 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was going to be my comment. This version is noticeably less clean, less on-pitch, less well blended than the studio version. Mitch was a touch flat on a couple of notes; Scott didn't have the fry just right. Still very very good, but obviously not lip-synched if you've heard the original 97 times like some of us have...

I've seen them 4 times live and can absolutely say that they are the real deal. Once was at a backstage "sound check" where they just stood on a stage in front of 50 of us and just sang. No lights, no production, no mics, just them. Stunning. They also were debating at that time whether to put Hallelujah into the show because they are perfectionists and wasn't sure it was ready (they put it in and it was amazing). They have said they won't do any song in the studio that they can't sing live. I'm excited to hear their 90's medley live.

I think that if you go back and watch the produced video of this song like many of us have, you will definitely hear the differences and actually can hear flaws in this performance. Still an amazing performance but there are definitely some flaws. Mitch almost goes flat at one point and his voice warbles. If you watch the produced version of this video I think that you’ll see the differences and certainly will be able to hear some of those live performance quirks if you will. I would also recommend checking out their live version of Hallelujah. It’s an even better live performance done not on a sponsored stage and in front of a live audience.

Recorded live and remixed and mastered in post. Each individual vocal/instrument could be bussed out of the console to a recording rig. It also could be straight out of the onstage splitter, if it was a 3 way. Remember when a mic/channel is input onstage, it's split with one signal going to monitor world and the other going to front of house via snakes. It could be a 3 way splitter, with the 3rd snake going raw to a recording rig, like multiple motu 8 Pre strips chained together. Depends on how they want to signal.

You could be deaf in one ear and hear that this performance was not lip synced. Defend him all you want. He has the right to bring up any subject in his reactions. @@donny1960 Mate, you're a freak, calm down. "He is a performer himself" do you not realise how increasingly difficult it is to be able to tell if performers are singing live? Even performers ourselves cannot distinguish sometimes, which is why he was asking for fan info, because we are more used to their live sound vs studio sound and would be able to point out moments of "proof". Or if it was a show which required a pre-recorded track (which it is not). I understand when vocal coaches can be weary of things and it comes across a certain way, but he lead up to it greatly showing he was hesitant and just wanted to know. Some fans do recommend videos of groups that sometimes might have a lipsynced verse, or moment, not ususally the whole performance but it can happen and he was simply asking. Mitch is a counter-tendor (basically a male who's voice is naturally within the normal female range. not common these days though still popular in opera), Kevin is surprisingly a tenor (with perfect pitch and wonderful rich tone). Scott is a baritone (with a lot of range. Everything from low tenor to upper bass. But most natural and well supported in the baritone range). Then matt/avi are bass but again with large range and can go up into the lower to mid baritone (though for the mid baritone they are getting close to doing falsetto, lots of headvoice).

I think if it wasn't live, they would have corrected Mitch's little slip-up there.

It's amazing how so many ppl are debating the Disturbed vs Pentatonix issue. I have listened to them both many times as well as loving for decades the original. All the versions have similarities to their arrangements but are all different and unique in and of themselves. I have loved the original for many years although I always felt it was performed to light and "folksy" for the message of the lyrics. Disturbed brought out the darkness and depth of soul emotion that the song really needed. I think David's rendition is by far the best when accounting for the message in the song but it is too powerful for me to enjoy on a frequent basis. Pentatonix brings the emotion out very well but in a more contemporary pop-ish vibe. In the end I think Disturbed's version is the best for drawing out the sheer anguish and emotion of the lyrics however, Pentatonix's version is the one that I find more listenable (and sing-along-able) to be on my daily playlist.

One reason I think this was live is because their timing, with the little extra sliding up of their voices when they came in together on the unison "and" was to my ear a tiny bit choppy, not as super clean and precise as on a "official" recorded video, (which is amazing!). But that's totally ok, even normal, because it is a live setting, and this performance was really good!

I’ve been to about 6 of their concerts, twice in the pit and one VIP. In arenas, state fair, and saw Scott and Mitch perform in a very small club when they toured as Superfruit. I understand the doubt but they sound exactly live as they sound in a recording. They sing their hearts out. They simply cannot be lip syncing, What was strange was that live, Scott, Mitch and Kirstie’s speaking voices sounded bizarrely higher pitched then when I hear them on video, But their singing was dead on. They have no reason to lip sync. Each members range has strengthened and expanded over 10 years as well. The difference in Kirstie’s voice before and after her role in Broadway Kinky Boots is remarkable. Scott has been working on expanding his lower range. They are a fun group of people but they are all extremely hard workers with incredible work ethic. Their sound checks are almost as long as their performances. As far as the camera angles, they are master KZbinrs as well. I don’t know if their group was responsible or their venue, but at many of the concerts I’ve been to, there are lots of their people with very expensive camera and film cameras buzzing about. They document.

Although not as aggressive, this version seems to be more inspired by the disturbed version rather than the original. with that unaccompanied base at the beginning building to that crescendo at the end.

There are definitely times when "live" is used loosely. I have no idea about this performance. As you said, it doesn't take away from their talent. Sometimes it is just an added backing track for one of their more layered songs (like The Prayer). Or like with their Hallelujah christmas special performance, some of the background percussion couldn't possibly be picked up by the microphones, but it's entirely possible all the vocals were live. I can't usualy tell the difference because I don't have a musical "ear"/background, and because they are capable of such perfection when fully live. But sometimes a reactor or someone in the comments will point something out that makes it clear. Either way, I think we all agree that they are phenomenally talented!

Also I love how you pointed out what a pop star Kirstie is! She is not a "diva" in the sense that she wants the limelight to herself, but the voice, the look, the stage presence - she truly does shine. Her power belting in the Prayer is so fantastic to hear and watch.

Scott is a baritone but him also sing as bass everytime Matt or Avi taking the vocal lead. Sometimes he sing as tenor too. Scott's vocal range is insane!

Yes, it's always live. They will not do anything else. No lip sync. Sometimes in big presentations Kevin has extra drum support from foot pads or real drums in this case because studio would usually lift the level of his stomps. See Daft Punk Medley live, just stood in a room to prove.

Know this was a year ago but I’m voting live - Kirsty presses against her ear when she takes lead (probably trying to hear better/move her earpiece or whatever)

Compare their studio version of "Daft Punk" with their green room live performance of the same. This sounded live to my ear. Wish they hadn't brought in the drummers; detracted from the performance but I understand that Pentatonix couldn't override the show producers (shame on those who thought it would improve the performance--really?!).

About crossing ranges: I have, since I was 7, sung in choirs and ensembles, and most of the time I was assigned to the soprano group. So I trained mostly my soprano range. And then when I was 14 I started having private singing and voice emission lessons and it turned out that my most comfortable, natural tone is... an alto. The first time I made a recording using only my chest voice my own mother didn’t recognize that I was the one singing. So yeah, I’d say it’s possible to look past the label someone places your voice. I am trying to mend that awkward transition range between my chest and head voice, but having trained one significantly longer than the other it’s been giving me some issues. But, another seven years later, I’d say it’s worth it to keep expanding your range, even if it doesn’t fall under a single assigned category.

If you truly doubt how good they are, watch some of their live performances that weren't professionally recorded. Aha! at Singapore is probably the best. Another really fun one to watch is they did Daft Punk backstage with no microphones just as a private performance. They are truly that good. Yes, the recording engineer clearly did an exceptional job. Also though, they've got so much experience with controlling their blend that they likely make it pretty easy on the engineer.

Really enjoyed your reaction! Mitch sometimes refers to himself as an alto:) He once said he would be a terrible vocal coach because he doesn't know much about vocal technique, which Scott said totally blows his mind because Mitch is the most technical singer he knows.

Mitch is a countertenor. It's an incredibly rare voice type. It's the highest a male voice can arrive at naturally, that is not singing in falsetto. Mitch's voice is very rich, very much unlike most males when they shift into falsetto.

Watch Aha! Singapore at the Star Vista. It's a fan cam. Only one take. Or Joyful, Joyful. Or Hallelujah, they're all in front of crowds and wouldn't take to doing it more than once. That being said, I don't get the drummers. I don't get why they were there when Kevin was there. One more.. They were all wearing black or navy. Mitch decided that because he didn't have anything to contribute to the group he'd wear bright red. That will show everyone! 😂😂😂
