Rush's "Subdivisions" was the first song that made a younger version of me feel like there were other people in the world like me, someone who didn't quite fit in with the various cliques and social groups I saw. I felt less alone after listening to that song. They more than anyone else made me feel like it was okay to be who I was, that I didn't need to change my personality or social behaviors to be loved, liked, and respected. It meant a lot then, and it means more now. I'm so grateful to them. Fantastic band.
@crimfan

Rush was that to a lot of people. They captured the alienation that many punk and metal bands did, too, but were more thoughtful than most of those groups and their chops were intense, while still being very musical. Few played that well and I don't know if there's another group that played that well together. They also kept evolving in a way that very few groups ever did.

Welcome to RUSH-land. A beautiful land where music is seldom predictable, key changes abound, lyrics are meaty, and 3 guys make a mighty noise all by their lonesome! This is a land of progressive rock geekdom. Welcome. Have fun. You should try Subdivisions, 2112, Time Stands Still (with Aimee Mann), and Spirit of Radio. They were together for 40 years!!! They stopped because Neil Peart (drums) was developing a few of his health problems, Alex Lifeson (guitar) was developing arthritis, and Geddy Lee(bass, keyboards, and vocals) even wanting to continue, was a supportive friend to his bandmates. Geddy and Alex were friends in grade school in Canada, and Neil was a replacement drummer for the original guy who developed serious health issues back in the early '70s.

You watched a band that will never happen again in rock. 40 years they created albums and toured but for several years after Neil's daughter died and then his partner. I picked up the bass due to Geddy, delivered newspapers for a year to buy the same Rickenbacker bass. I do not put any celeb on a thrown but when I heard Neil died I cried, for 35+ years of my life I was a fan. Senior yearbook quote was from Losing It. I bought a sax for a child in Neil's name so he could play in the middle school band. I also did not watch this video as I was afraid of what you may say and I am a fan of your vids esp the rock ones. Rush and Neil's death mean that much to me.

I happen to know (my son will forever love Rush) that Rush fans are, first of all, loyal. They're in it for the long haul, and very interested in the lessons to be found in Rush's music -- lessons couched in wondrous phrases and lovely, exciting rhythms. Even if Geddy Lee sounded like a banshee being castrated, those lessons would still be valid.

"Closer To The Heart" would represent Geddy Lee's upper register well. There is a live version available from Exit Stage Left 1981 of this song. The bassist singer Geddy Lee also plays synthesiser on footpedals during this song while guitarist Alex Lifeson utilises pedals to simulate two guitarists. They manage to create amazingly close rendition to this studio version.

To me there were three eras of Geddy's voice. The early years (up to Hemispheres) where his range was to the moon. Then the middle era (Permanent Waves to Test for Echo) and finally the end (Vapor Trails on). Each had it's strengths and weaknesses. I became a fan in 1980 so the middle Geddy is my favorite. An interesting video may be to take a sample from the three eras and compare and contrast, especially on how a person's voice changes with age and how they compensate. As always, a nice reaction from one of my favorites.

Ah... Rush... an _all time fave_ ! Of all the greatness that is Rush, Neil's drums are an absolute stand out! Of course, not to ignore Geddy's basslines, or Alex' staccato guitar is awesome too.. Hell, they are just awesome :) Just listen to the bassline roll @4:30.... spectacular stuff and such a strong band. We recently lost Neil after the last number of years that were very hard on him, may he rest in peace :( Alex coming back into the bridge @4:54 just brings the song back to life after a great guitar solo. As you can obviously tell.... I am just a major, MAJOR Rush fan! Thank you, Rebecca for bringing your touch to this great band. Note: Geddy did get more "chesty" roughly 8 years after this recording. Tribute to Neil Peart Lyrics O' The Day... EY?: ""I bring love to give you solace in the darkness of the night, in the Heart's eternal light. You need only trust your feelings, only love can steer you right" Rush _Book II: Hemispheres: Iii. I've always liked how Neil said one of the things you have to listen to when setting the tempo for a song is how the singer is doing. If you are too fast the singer is struggling to fit it all in. If you are too slow the singer has to stretch notes for longer than intended. I think this says something about Rush; that they were always in tune with each other. This was one key to why they always sound so good in concert.

One of the most perfect bands ever - three guys sounding like so many more and writing such wonderful music for decades. They lost me a bit at Power Windows as it was a bit too main-stream 'pop-rock' for me and I live in their early/middle years of Farewell to Kings, 2112, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Subdivisions. I first heard them on the Friday Night Rock Show when I tuned in just as Xanadu was starting and spent a minute trying to figure out if I had dialled in right . The next day, I was struck by the cover to 2112 (with its sci-fi story in the lyrics) in the record shop of my hometown, asked to hear some of the album and by the time it was half way through Overture they had my money ... and I've been a fan ever since. They are one of those rare bands whose music can emotionally engage you to tears because they write things that you can relate to your life. A couple of standouts for me are "Madrigal", which I listened to almost on loop when driving after my wife died (daft really, as driving when you can't see because you're breaking your heart is not exactly safe!) ... dammit, searched it out to link and the inevitable happened :(. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5izh4iEhLdqbLs Another tear-inducer is Countdown. Polarizing seems strong, but maybe not... I had a little trouble with Geddy's voice when I first heard them back in the 70's. Took me a while to come around. But then I was stupid enough to not recognize Led Zeppelin's brilliance until years later. Has this adorable and funny young lady ever reacted to a Yes song? I'd be interested in hearing the coach's take on Jon Anderson's sweet and soaring voice. It seems like And You and I would be a good one to have a go at, if not...

Overwhelmed is an understatement. Comments on where his voice is at? really. How many songs have you made that the world knows? Time out is good, if not needed in this genre of music. Because you are comfortable in your head voice doesn't mean you have to leave it. What is needed and required in this song is what is happening. You may not be adequately equipped to understand this but if you were in this band you would understand. Like Eddie Van Halen used to say, if it sounds good play, or in this case sing it...until you yourself can be at the caliber of these musicians you can't pass judgement as to what the vocals should or shouldn't be. How do you rate to these amazing artists? Have you been famous since 1968? Who do you think you are to say or not say what Rush is doing right or wrong? Reality check....Schooling doesn't make you the ultimate authority of music and or vocals. Especially since you have only been an authority, used lightly, for 20 some odd years. Where Rush have been around since 1968! I appreciate that you try to comment on their skills as vocalist but until you have the backing and legitimacy that Rush has just keep your comments to those who are learning and not the learned.

Thanks for doing a rush song. There are so many to choose from, and Geddy's voice is one you either like or don't. Unfortunately, after only 45 years (sarcasm) he's lost the range where so many of their songs lived, but his voice was a part of the music as much as his bass, synth, the guitars, and the drums (which is such an understatement on what Neil did... Kit, electronic, chimes, bells, a gong...). My absolute favourite band (and they're Canadian). Unlike any other band I can think of, Neil also wrote practically all of the lyrics. I'm surprised at how affected I still am by his death, but, as you said, when it's a band you grew up with... Thanks for doing this. :)

And by the way, they formed with original drummer John Rutsey in the late 60's and put out their first album in 1974. One of their most beautiful songs ever and the perfect ending to an unprecedented musical legacy... "Clockwork Angels" was not well accepted, but it is probably my 2nd favorite album of theirs behind "Moving Pictures." No band in history can come close to their blend of perfectionism, complexity, musicality and lyrical depth. @@mack7372, absolutely correct about The Garden. It was Neil's goodbye to the fans. He knew he was ready to finally hang it all up. I don't think he knew that 5 years later he would be gone, but I think he felt he needed time to spend with his wife and their daughter. He wanted to really be there for them. It was tragic how his first wife and daughter passed away. And I think it left an indelible mark on him. So the second time around he wanted it to be about his family.

The biggest thrill for me was bringing our Death Metal Drummer friend June Bug (this kid was born to be a Drummer) to see Rush almost against his will. My best friend and I payed for his ticket bought his drinks. Watching him watch Neil was worth every penny. I still see him once in awhile and he still thanks me for making him go. There are few bands that go about there craft with the professionalism and integrity as Rush has over the years. So glad I was there to see it.

This is probably the most "Neil" song they ever did. He was an extreme introvert. He only did interviews with drum magazines and never did meet and greets. This got him a reputation with some as arrogant and unappreciative but he explained it in their 'Beyond the Lighted Stage' documentary. He is extremely embarrassed when people tell him he's the best of all time (he totally is) or that he's changed their lives. He just isn't one of those people who handles compliments well. Sounds strange from a person who makes his living playing for 20k people a night, but I always thought part of the reason his drum kit was so encompassing (aside from the fact that he uses it all) was because it was a bit of a psychological barrier to let him play but not have to do the extrovert thing.

Rush history: formed in 1968. the trio you watched came to be in 1974 and remained as Kings, reigning through 2015 when they finally retired. 19 studio albums, several live albums and years of sold out and high grossing tours. The group has been awarded 24 gold, 14 platinum and 3 multi-platinum albums. That ranks them fifth - behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith - on the all-time list for most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band. Integrity, integrity and integrity sum up their career. Never selling out, never compromising, always remaining true. No drug or sex scandals. No embarrassing escapades that seem to frequently litter the music industry. Just three humble artisans who excelled at their craft. Unlike any before or after. As Gene Simmons of Kiss said: "What kind of band is Rush? .... It's RUSH"!!! Watch their induction into the R/R hall of fame. No other inductee has garnered the applause that Rush received that night. The drummer, Neil Peart (pronounced Peer(t) passed on Jan 7, 2020 from Glioblastoma. In addition to arguably being the greatest R/R drummer of all time and the band's lyricist, he was also a prolific author. The band gave 40 years worth of awe inspiring music, life example and integrity from which to glean. Worth your time to further investigate. Watch the documentary from 2010, Beyond the Lighted Stage if you'd like a good introduction.

My favorite band of all time. One of the amazing things about them is the way they play with time signatures. Somehow they manage to shift the time in many of their songs, but do it so effortlessly and seamlessly you don't even notice. Until you try to play it! And while it's true that Lee wasn't able to hit the super-high notes in later years, he adjusted his vocal style on later albums to reflect his changing voice. The band adapted in many other ways, constantly changing and evolving their sound, not just trying to repeat the same stuff over and over.

Music is, truly, the universal language. It can mean something different to each of us, but it has no color or class. If it speaks to you, it speaks to you. That's what I love about it and I love that my 25 year old daughter has everything from the Beatles to some weird (to me) band that I've never heard of. I still respect everyone who's out there doing it. Whether writing, playing, singing, or all three. "Is that where they were when they filmed this?" That's at Le Studio in Quebec, which had been completely abandoned for over a decade, up until a few years ago, and is now being renovated. It was one of the earliest-if not the first-of the now prevalent "recording studio as a retreat" where bands would go to live in a remote place during the recording of their albums. A lot of big names recorded there in its day. Bowie, Nazareth, Queensrÿche, The Police, Cat Stevens, The Bee Gees, BNL, etc.

Rush was formed in August 1968 in the Willowdale neighborhood of Toronto. The original lineup included Alex Lifeson on guitar, Jeff Jones on bass and John Rutsey on drums. Jones was soon replaced by Geddy Lee, and, in 1974, after the release of the group’s debut album, Rutsey left and was replaced by Neil Peart (pronounced /ˈpɪərt/). That lineup Lee on vocals, bass and keyboards; Lifeson on guitar, and Peart on drums - has remained stable throughout the years.

You can't get the FULL Rush experience until you see them live!! There is no way 3 people can produce that much sound...except then you realize, not only is Geddy singing but he's playing a bass and a foot organ most of the time. Throw in one of ,if not the greatest drummers of all time, who fills in EVERY "hollow spot" that you can get with 3 piece bands, and perhaps the most underappreciated rock guitarist in history, and you get an arena that is just filled with sound. Saw them in 5 different arena's and it was amazing every time.

Rush was always three musicians who knew how to rock out together, and--most of all--they were friends. After Neil lost his daughter and first wife wife within the space of a year, the band went on hiatus until he was ready to do it again; they never talked about a replacement, because you CANNOT replace Neil Peart. Unlike many musicians, they never took themselves too seriously; they used to take the stage to the theme from "the Three Stooges". Heck, 40 years after he joined the band, Neil was jokingly referred to as "the new guy". RUSH--Just a bunch of great musicians and all-around good guys from Canada, who developed a loyal (but not rabid) following, because of their music, and who they were and are.
