Welcome to RUSH-land. A beautiful land where music is seldom predictable, key changes abound, lyrics are meaty, and 3 guys make a mighty noise all by their lonesome! This is a land of progressive rock geekdom. Welcome. Have fun. You should try Subdivisions, 2112, Time Stands Still (with Aimee Mann), and Spirit of Radio. They were together for 40 years!!! They stopped because Neil Peart (drums) was developing a few of his health problems, Alex Lifeson (guitar) was developing arthritis, and Geddy Lee(bass, keyboards, and vocals) even wanting to continue, was a supportive friend to his bandmates. Geddy and Alex were friends in grade school in Canada, and Neil was a replacement drummer for the original guy who developed serious health issues back in the early '70s.

Rush's "Subdivisions" was the first song that made a younger version of me feel like there were other people in the world like me, someone who didn't quite fit in with the various cliques and social groups I saw. I felt less alone after listening to that song. They more than anyone else made me feel like it was okay to be who I was, that I didn't need to change my personality or social behaviors to be loved, liked, and respected. It meant a lot then, and it means more now. I'm so grateful to them. Fantastic band.

Rush was that to a lot of people. They captured the alienation that many punk and metal bands did, too, but were more thoughtful than most of those groups and their chops were intense, while still being very musical. Few played that well and I don't know if there's another group that played that well together. They also kept evolving in a way that very few groups ever did.

I do not put any celeb on a thrown but when I heard Neil died I cried, for 35+ years of my life I was a fan. Senior yearbook quote was from Losing It. I bought a sax for a child in Neil's name so he could play in the middle school band. To me there were three eras of Geddy's voice. The early years (up to Hemispheres) where his range was to the moon. Then the middle era (Permanent Waves to Test for Echo) and finally the end (Vapor Trails on). Each had it's strengths and weaknesses. I became a fan in 1980 so the middle Geddy is my favorite. I've always liked how Neil said one of the things you have to listen to when setting the tempo for a song is how the singer is doing. If you are too fast the singer is struggling to fit it all in. If you are too slow the singer has to stretch notes for longer than intended. I think this says something about Rush; that they were always in tune with each other. Overwhelmed is an understatement. Comments on where his voice is at? really. How many songs have you made that the world knows? Time out is good, if not needed in this genre of music. Because you are comfortable in your head voice doesn't mean you have to leave it. What is needed and required in this song is what is happening. You may not be adequately equipped to understand this but if you were in this band you would understand. Like Eddie Van Halen used to say, if it sounds good play, or in this case sing it...until you yourself can be at the caliber of these musicians you can't pass judgement as to what the vocals should or shouldn't be. How do you rate to these amazing artists? Have you been famous since 1968? Who do you think you are to say or not say what Rush is doing right or wrong? Reality check....Schooling doesn't make you the ultimate authority of music and or vocals. Especially since you have only been an authority, used lightly, for 20 some odd years. Where Rush have been around since 1968! I appreciate that you try to comment on their skills as vocalist but until you have the backing and legitimacy that Rush has just keep your comments to those who are learning and not the learned.

They lost me a bit at Power Windows as it was a bit too main-stream 'pop-rock' for me and I live in their early/middle years of Farewell to Kings, 2112, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Subdivisions. I first heard them on the Friday Night Rock Show when I tuned in just as Xanadu was starting and spent a minute trying to figure out if I had dialled in right :lol:. The next day, I was struck by the cover to 2112 (with its sci-fi story in the lyrics) in the record shop of my hometown, asked to hear some of the album and by the time it was half way through Overture they had my money ... and I've been a fan ever since. They are one of those rare bands whose music can emotionally engage you to tears because they write things that you can relate to your life. A couple of standouts for me are "Madrigal", which I listened to almost on loop when driving after my wife died (daft really, as driving when you can't see because you're breaking your heart is not exactly safe!) ... dammit, searched it out to link and the inevitable happened :(. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5izh4iEhLdqbLs Another tear-inducer is Countdown. Unfortunately, after only 45 years (sarcasm) he's lost the range where so many of their songs lived, but his voice was a part of the music as much as his bass, synth, the guitars, and the drums (which is such an understatement on what Neil did... Kit, electronic, chimes, bells, a gong...). My absolute favourite band (and they're Canadian). Unlike any other band I can think of, Neil also wrote practically all of the lyrics. I would love to recommend one song that I feel is a must listen to. The masterpiece "The Garden" is the final song on their final album- even if you do not do a video, please listen to this incredible song, it is so deep, so meaningful and so profound. I am a life long Rush fan and this song resonates like no other- and there are many to choose from.

I posted this above to someone else's comment about this song, but it's SO nice to see others who appreciate this song for what it is and what it means to me as well! One of their most beautiful songs ever and the perfect ending to an unprecedented musical legacy... "Clockwork Angels" was not well accepted, but it is probably my 2nd favorite album of theirs behind "Moving Pictures." No band in history can come close to their blend of perfectionism, complexity, musicality and lyrical depth. Neil's understanding of society and the human condition spoke to me like no other musical act and shaped my outlook on everything from philosophy to politics. He will be missed dearly by his millions of fans, but their music lives on forever!

@calkelpdiver4 жыл бұрын
@@mack7372, absolutely correct about The Garden. It was Neil's goodbye to the fans. He knew he was ready to finally hang it all up. I don't think he knew that 5 years later he would be gone, but I think he felt he needed time to spend with his wife and their daughter. He wanted to really be there for them. It was tragic how his first wife and daughter passed away. And I think it left an indelible mark on him. So the second time around he wanted it to be about his family.

I'm a child of the 70's-80's I am fortunate enough to have seen Rush live several times. Twice so close that if Geddy stretched out at the same time as me we could have shook hands. The biggest thrill for me was bringing our Death Metal Drummer friend June Bug (this kid was born to be a Drummer) to see Rush almost against his will. My best friend and I payed for his ticket bought his drinks. Watching him watch Neil was worth every penny. I still see him once in awhile and he still thanks me for making him go. There are few bands that go about there craft with the professionalism and integrity as Rush has over the years. So glad I was there to see it.

This is probably the most "Neil" song they ever did. He was an extreme introvert. He only did interviews with drum magazines and never did meet and greets. This got him a reputation with some as arrogant and unappreciative but he explained it in their 'Beyond the Lighted Stage' documentary. He is extremely embarrassed when people tell him he's the best of all time (he totally is) or that he's changed their lives. He just isn't one of those people who handles compliments well. Sounds strange from a person who makes his living playing for 20k people a night, but I always thought part of the reason his drum kit was so encompassing (aside from the fact that he uses it all) was because it was a bit of a psychological barrier to let him play but not have to do the extrovert thing.

WOW! You did Rush! My church of music. My heart broke when Neil died. I saw them 49 times from 1981 to 2015. That was Le Studio in Canada from the video, where they recorded the Moving Pictures album that Lime Light is on. If you wanna here Geddy sing high listen to 2112. Amazing record and the one that really made them a main stay in rock n roll. It is so sad we will never get any new music from them again. They won't play without Neil and rightfully so. He was not only the drummer, but he wrote the lyrics and he was more than a drummer, he was a composer of percussion. Their last album Clockwork Angels is brilliant. Check that one out to. Be safe kid!!!

If you want to hear more of his earlier range, listen to anything off of Hemispheres, Farewell to kings or 2112. He still has great range in the 80's/early 90's IE: Permanent waves.

"Is that where they were when they filmed this?" That's at Le Studio in Quebec, which had been completely abandoned for over a decade, up until a few years ago, and is now being renovated. It was one of the earliest-if not the first-of the now prevalent "recording studio as a retreat" where bands would go to live in a remote place during the recording of their albums. A lot of big names recorded there in its day. Bowie, Nazareth, Queensrÿche, The Police, Cat Stevens, The Bee Gees, BNL, etc.

Rush!!! Quite arguably the single most talented band in rock history....
@jacksonandrews12684 жыл бұрын
No argument. They are the most talented, but it was the fusion of all three that made them that way. It was magical. Makes me believe in predestination and that certain things are meant to be. I am a huge music fan with over 22,000 tracks in my iTunes collection from nearly 2000 musical artists and Rush reigns supreme over all others.

@@jacksonandrews1268 oh, without a doubt! I believe rush still would've garnered some success with John Rutsey but nothing compared to what they achieved when Neil entered the band.. Easily one of the most talented and polished groups in history and it was a travesty that it took so long for them to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Geddy's voice has always been one of the most controversial things about them, though. People either love it or hate it, there is no middle ground. Personally, I can't imagine Rush without Geddy's shrieking vocals.
@jacksonandrews12684 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way. The fusion of all of their musical skills came together like no other band, ever. And Geddy's voice would not have worked well without the complexity of their music and lyrics. It was a perfect match...

My favorite band of all time. One of the amazing things about them is the way they play with time signatures. Somehow they manage to shift the time in many of their songs, but do it so effortlessly and seamlessly you don't even notice. Until you try to play it! And while it's true that Lee wasn't able to hit the super-high notes in later years, he adjusted his vocal style on later albums to reflect his changing voice. The band adapted in many other ways, constantly changing and evolving their sound, not just trying to repeat the same stuff over and over.

Rebecca, Glad you got to listen to this! RUSH is and was the BANDS band! REAL Musician pioneers! Most of the major bands have RUSH as their influences. Several Decades of major Influence! To see them Live was breathtaking! Geddy Lee playing Bass AND Keyboards AND singing! Wow! Alex Lifeson amazing guitarist! ...........then there's NEIL PEART! My number 1 drum influence who had a huge huge huge huge following of "air drummers" in cars and live in concerts. So many drummers with setups just like Neil Peart's. Not to mention he was the lyricist for the band. Such a private band, so grateful to have seen them 5 times in concert along with my son when he was young. Sad to hear of his passing, grateful to have enjoyed their music all these decades. On a closing comment, the first time I ever heard "Tom Sawyer" I remember I was at the beach in the early 80's. Rebecca, Please listen to TOM SAWYER and tell me what you think............thank you for your positive reaction and comments to this one-of-a-kind band.

One of my favourite Rush songs! Neil Peart was originally from Hagersville, Ontario, but he was born in the same city and even the same hospital as myself of Hamilton, Ontario. This song, as most were written by Neil and is about his socially awkward shyness. One last little know Rush trivia is that both lead singer Geddy Lee’s parents were Holocaust survivors and actually met in the same concentration camp. Loved the review and cheers!

Rush is your favorite bands favorite band. The band formed in 1968 with Alex and Geddy as 15 year old high school buddies. In 1974 Neil joined the band and became the primary lyricist. They stayed together until their last concert in 2015 when Neil decided he could no longer play at his best. As a true perfectionist he thought it would be better to hang them up rather than play in a diminished capacity. RIP professor Peart, you are the BEST EVER!
