The term barbaric actually comes from the Greek word to stutter, which the ancient Greeks used to identify foreigners, who did not speak the language. AFAIK, the main reason for the decline was that the empire crumbled under its own weight because of political infighting, coupled with a bout of the black plague. I am not even going to argue what would constitute a "sophisticated" legal system... all I'm going to say is that life for the common man wasn't that much different in the west than it was under the Mongols.. That said, this music rocks.

Throat singing is crazy. The way he is performing the 'trill' that is blowing your mind - listen very carefully and it will make sense - it is because he shifts the harmonics of his vocal cords slightly out of phase on purpose, and then back into alignment. It's just like playing a chord on a guitar, then tuning one of the strings up or down a titch - you hear the harmonic begin to 'trill' as it detunes, then smooth out as it tunes back in. That is literally what he is doing what his own vocal chords. It's nuts.

The Hu Band does some wonderful work, and one of their dominant themes is this whole sense of Mongolian heritage. The message that they used to be warriors - conquerors... and they still have that within them. Their song Yuve Yuve Yu (since you can have translated subtitles on KZbin) really does have the message of "we have the blood of warriors in us, and here we are, idle and listless as a nation." But yes, all of their instruments are traditional Mongolian instruments, even that guitar-like instrument.

This video connects to the primal nature in all of us as humans, regardless of our culture. 🧬 🌎 🥁 🎻 Will you react to the Hu’s song, “song of women” with Lzzy Hale? It is different, but just as amazing. 🥰

@Jay Pat uhmm, the Vikings founded the Empire of Kiev, concuered a big chunk of Britain, founded London (as a city), raided Paris, twice!! Discovered America and middle East, discovered Arabian peninsule (Iraq/Iran), became the personal bodyguards for the Byzantine Emperor, founded colonies on Greenland, Svalbard and Iceland. They mostly never intended to concuer territory, that was not their goal. And known as elite mercenaries allover Europe, Asia and Middle East.

Someone fluent posted a translation for this on another reaction I saw months ago. Basically this entire song is exactly what it sounds like, a Mongolian war chant. It's full of all kinds of badass shit talking about thunder and lightning from the skies and the great Khan (Genghis). It's pretty friggin sweet.
