This is just the best unplugged period in my opinion. Just the pure raw emotion gives you chills. Aic is the best in my book.

It makes me happy that you researched the group before this video. He wasn't all there during this video, but we all know that. He hung in there as much as anyone could ever expect. Jerry Cantrell's vocal are very much on target as well and he still tours, releases CDs and such. Jerry wrote that song about his ex. Nutshell from the same show should have you in tears. Also, you are correct in that Layne was throwing in the towel, so to speak.

Thanks so much again for sharing your analysis and reaction with us, as well as taking the time to add subtitles. Jerry Cantrell, the lead guitarist, does have a great voice himself, and has talked about how Layne encouraged him to sing on Alice in Chains songs. You were right on when you said Layne didn't seem like a guy who wanted fame. Their song "Nutshell" has some lyrics that express his feelings about it.

Great reaction. I recommend Mad Season 'Wake Up' with Layne Staley at The Moore Theater 1995. Layne was sober that year, and the band was formed with members from Pearl Jam and The Screaming Trees.
@TurnIntoGhosts23 күн бұрын
So, the Unplugged session was performed in 1996 and, I believe, the last recorded Alice in Chains song with Layne Staley was 'Get Born Again', in 1998. Layne died in 2002, so he hadn't quite given up yet during the Unplugged session, but he definitely wasn't okay either. In any case, as sad as it is, the way Layne brought his demons to the surface is partly why this band was unrivaled, in my opinion. Every single song comes from the heart, and you can feel his pain and sorrow. There's a reason why people describe (old) Alice in Chains as 'haunting'.

Jerry Cantrell is the lead Guitarist/backup vocalist, You heard him before in Man in a Box he sings the "Deny your maker" part. He sings backup in alot of AIC songs & even sings lead on a few Layne era songs(he sings lead on most of the post Layne stuff). Jerry also wrote most of AIC's music & half the lyrics with Layne. Yea Layne was in bad shape here, this was in 1996 which was the last year Layne did a live performance. After his ex fiance died later that year Layne became a recluse for the last 6 years of his life until in 2002 where his body was found 2 weeks after he died of a OD(that's how lonely he was).

You can hear the change to his soft palette, he's developed a lisp, and it'd get worse as he began loosing his teeth. I've read conflicting information about this performance but it seems credible that he did do heroin before the show to ensure he could get through it. Like alcohol becomes sustenance for an alcoholic, Layne was dependent on heroin just to function. This song was originally about Jerry Cantrell's girlfriend but in this context really embodied Layne's decline. Remarkable that he could still perform in this state, Mike and Sean were skeptical as well (bassist and drummer) but when Layne hits the line at the end of the first chorus Jerry gives them a "see, I told you so" wink. Jerry and Layne's support for one another was truly remarkable, Layne ducks out of the last few harmonies to let Jerry have some shine. I always thought it was because he was tired but his little smirk indicates otherwise. Layne's belief in Jerry as a singer was a truly beautiful thing.

8:34 to answer this ? I've copied & pasted from the internet because, firstly, it's just easier and, second, the explanation i ended up finding was far more succinctly stated than i feel i could have expresed myself anyway so... "what does that mean?" ↓ * Symbolic meaning: "Inside of you" is not meant literally, but represents a yearning to be fully enveloped and absorbed by someone else, potentially signifying a need for emotional support or a sense of being lost within a relationship. * Dark undertones: Given the song's overall theme of despair and addiction, this lyric can be seen as expressing a desire to be completely consumed by something negative or self-destructive. * Context of the song: "Down in a Hole" is widely considered to be about the struggles of addiction and the isolation that comes with it, so this lyric could be interpreted as a plea for connection, even if it's within a destructive relationship dynamic.
