I’ve seen a several vocal coaches react to best and worst vocal performances from artist and they all agree just like you they don’t understand half the time who is determining what makes them the worst and best. The artist can chose to change a key or the pitch if need be depending on the day!

Idk, the tone used or the pitch or strain was quite noticeable to me in the bad versions. Ari is one of my fav of all time but she does have this problem of sounding a bit troathy, thin and hollow at times. Like I know she has a light voice but I feel like she could sometimes add a bit more weight. But as a whole she has a great voice and has a quality I always love in singers, she knows how to sing a melody, makes the high note sound like what it's supposed to convey.

Actually in the worst vocal clips I notice either pitch issues, more tension and strain, note wasn't hit properly and messy runs. There is a difference between the clips but you should definitely react to her Sweetener tour vocals

So basically, the sound engineers weren't doing their job on one while they did on another. This is really enlightening and shows that an Artist can be a great vocalist but the sound output could really affects the performance.

Well, I don’t want to hate on you or offend you, but you clearly don’t know what your talking about. On the the clips catalogued as worst, Ariana is either out of breath, pitchy (flat or sharp) or singing with a high larynx, which results on a lot of strain and sometimes on her not even reaching the note. However, on the clips catalogued as best, Ariana is basically doing everything right, and uses a very good technique and mix without any worrying flaw. So no, it’s not a “sound thing because of the reverb”, it’s because she basically wasn’t singing correctly. That’s it.

Like at 3:07 shes clearly straining with a highly pulled larynx and the sound is very dry and constricted and not free/open . Compared to the best one . Then she goes flat at the end...
