When I first saw this, I never expected a crossover between BTS and The Tiny Desk. But, I am so happy that it happened. I have been a fan and have been following BTS since their debut as a group back in 2013. I have also watched plenty of Tiny Desk Concerts, but this one brings back so many memories. Leading with "Dynamite," the song is upbeat and happy. But, for anyone that doesn't really follow BTS or isn't a fan of them, I want to shift a little more focus onto their song "Spring Day." "Spring Day" was released back in 2017. If you haven't watched the MV for that song, I recommend doing so. It truly is a work of art. The lyrics to the song talk about winter and waiting for the transition into spring. Winter symbolizing death, pain, sadness and loneliness, is used in their MV concept based off the book "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." The book's concept is that one individual's misery, means many others happiness and prosperity and vice versa. This can be said about the world we live in today. When the leader of the group Kim Namjoon (bluish hair) and Jeon Jungkook (youngest member and 3rd from the left) say "it's been a rough summer, but we know that spring will come," they are eluding to what's going on in the world today with the pandemic, but also to another concept in the "Spring Day" MV. Back in 2014, there was a tragic event in South Korea where a 6,825-ton Sewol ferry carrying 476 passengers, 250 of them being teenagers from Dawon High School, sank and ended up killing 304 people. What made the tragic event even worse, was that the government was trying to cover it up for political reasons. BTS wanted to pay homage to this event with "Spring Day" and the "Spring Day" MV, so that the event and the people that were lost that day are never forgotten. Listening to "Spring Day" always evokes so much emotion for me and hearing BTS sing it on The Tiny Desk did just that. It evokes sadness and pain, but is a reminder that it will pass. That whatever rough days we are going through are temporary and that spring will come. BTS is more than just a music group. They were counted out so much when they first debuted as a group, but they worked so hard to get to where they are today and I couldn't be more proud. They are artists and I'm happy that they got to showcase that on The Tiny Desk.

The performance would have been even better if the CCs were turned on to understand the beauty of their Korean lyrics. Dynamite is fun, poppy and was created to bring some light into our lives when we were still in lockdown mode but the boys had no hand in the song's creation. This is unusual since the rap line (red and black mics with the group's leader sporting blue hair) tend to be the most involved with their music in terms of writing or producing. Edit: All of the boys have done some writing, producing, etc, too. Save Me is such a lovely song with a companion called I'm Fine that was released years later but instead of needing to be saved we're now okay to stand on our own. Finally, the queen Spring Day is a song that talks about loss, heartbreak and the emotions that go with it knowing that it won't last forever because spring will come. Spring Day has been on the Korean charts since its release in 2017 and considered one of their best songs due to the horrific national tragedy that the MV hints at. This would be the Sewol Ferry accident where A LOT of school children who were on a school trip died when the ferry sunk after being told to stay in their seats by the captain/crew. Hopefully you'll give this a relisten with the CCs on and understand more of where the songs are coming from. Edit: my spelling is even worse than usual today.

There was a point during "Save Me" where you said "No idea what that was about." Let me explain about fanchants. BTS (and K-Pop groups in general) always have parts that are meant during the live shows to be sung or chanted by the audience. During Save Me, RM's part leads up to the highlight of this song's live fan chants, where the music drops out, RM holds out the mic, and the audience shouts out at full voice: "Thank You, Uri Ga Dwae Jwoseo", or in English "Thank You for being 'us'!" In this case, the rest of the band had to do the fanchant instead, since we couldn't be there.

V's voice is just everything ( deep, soulful, addictive, beautiful voice , a baritone legend , the widest range , the most powerful vocalist in BTS ) V possesses a baritone singing voice that has received a generally positive critical reception, with particular praise for his vocal range and "husky" tone.He gained wider vocal recognition for his performance of his solo song "Stigma", and was praised for his falsettos that showed off his vocal range and unique musicality.V's tonality on "Singularity", the opening track of BTS' Love Yourself: Tear (2018), was noted as a prominent "tone setter" on the album by music critic Blanca Méndez. Similarly, Katie Goh of Vice deemed it as "one of V's best vocal performances." Karen Ruffini of Elite Daily stated in their article that "V... has no problem producing super soothing, low tones that are a key element in the overall sound for BTS,"with Tamar Herman from Billboard also noting that V's lower range is a prominent piece of BTS' music.V's musicality is heavily influenced by his love for jazz and classical music. Eric Benet and Ruben Studdard are among his inspirations

Interesting facts about Jin, aka World Wide Handsome, the oldest (brown shirt): He was discovered while getting off a bus & was signed with Big Hit Entertainment based on his looks alone. At that time, he was a theater major & had no experience in either singing or dancing. After his trainee period, Jin had drastically improved & was signed as the 4th member of BTS. To this day, Jin, despite knowing he's good & being highly praised by other members, still doesn't fully believe that he's exceptionally talented.

I feel that the "Light it up like dynamite" part adds a bit of vocal percussion that can enhance the sound if done right. (A bit like what beatboxers do.) Example: If you say only the beginning of the letter d it sound like a high-hat. So the D In Dynamite is a high-hat.

I do agree that J-Hope (the rapper in the orange suit on the far left) has one of the more unique voices in the group. If you listen to his work as a rapper, he plays around with his voice a lot and his music is very performative and feels more like the sounds he wants to make carry or build the songs instead of the lyrics or melody, so it really makes sense that he stands out! I especially like when he sings with that light, gliding quality like in the third song of this tiny desk set. If you're interested in great singers from S. Korea, I would recommend the women groups Mamamoo and Big Mama who both have amazing medleys on the dingo music killing voice series.

You kept commenting on V's (the guy sat in the middle in blue) voice and the sort of strong endings he was putting on his parts. You wouldn't probably know this but V is a natural baritone and all of these songs are actually quite high for his usual comfort range in singing, so I think it's him putting in a lot of breath behind his notes in order to get up to the range he was meant to be singing at here. If you're interested in hearing his singing in his "comfortable" range, check out "Singularity." His range is amazing though, and he absolutely smashes a CRAZY high note in his song, "Stigma."

They are INCREDIBLE boys.
