Boys of Summer is one of my most cherished songs of the 80's. I was like... 13 back then and I heard it on repeat. It reminds me of my youth, the book I was reading, how good the times were. And rigth now this version makes me cry... so beautiful and melancholic.

I have always liked this song as it painted a picture of the melancholy we feel end of summer. It reminds me of the summers at our beach house growing up. The girl who became my wife and I spent the summers of our teen years at beach. When she passed away I had this song played at her funeral because it reminded me of our summers together...and her departure from life. The image evoked by the lyrics "empty lake, empty streets, the sun goes down alone" echoed my feelings at her loss...and still do all these years later. It is a lovely bittersweet song...

You remarked on the open vowel way he sings the "I' in "I can see you...". You need to keep in mind that Henley is a native Texan raised in rural East Texas on a farm. And even though his speaking voice no longer has a heavy southern accent that it may have had as a kid growing up in East Texas, when he sings, it will come through to a certain extent, especially on those kinds of vowel sounds. We in the southern US pronounce all our words such as I, bye, high, sky etc with that 'open vowel'...And true southerners are not ashamed of it either. Proud of it in fact! 🙂 Like a song I once heard says, "I speak my southern English just a freely as I wish" #Southernstrongsouthernproud! #DonHenley

The official video won Best Video of the Year on MTV, which makes it even more of a blast from the past. It's so great how so many from one band went on to such great solo careers like Don, Joe Walsh, Don Felder, and Glenn Frey. Glenn Frey's "Smugglers Blues" is also a great song and video. There's just something about drummer / singers that is just so impressive with the talent it takes to do both at the same time.

I have nothing but respect for all the Eagles, but sorry Glenn ( R I P Legend) Felder, Walsh etc did not have anywhere near the success Don Henley did in his solo career & with the utmost respect to them All, Henley is an absolute genius lyricist, Exceptional singer. His solo songs will be epic centuries from now and his duets with Stevie Nicks, Patty Smyth, Trisha Yearwood are among the best duets ever heard. There's just simply no-one like him. I do agree though the few drummers with great voices usually are extremely special. Phil Collins is the perfect example, Karen Carpenter (R I P) was a great drummer and a fantastic singer too. All three are truly remarkable. I think Don's songs sets him apart as they have great depth and wisdom about them amongst all the other things, and that's what makes him my favourite.

I always thought the “boys” in Boys of Summer were the summer residents. Those boys whose families had summer beach homes or the boys working the summer tourist jobs. The girl, I assume, is a year round resident gaining attraction from the summer boys. The narrator is saying, I’ll be there for you with a growing love beyond the boys of summer. It’s one of Henley (and Mike Campbell’s) best songs.

have to ask - have you listened to the studio version of this song - this slow "contemplative" rendition really takes away the story behind it. Can't speak for others but Americans all (nearly all) can relate to having had one very special summer love. Young, free, the beach or the lake - the girl of your dreams. Lost in love for a brief (all too brief) summer you feel as though it will last forever. Then summer ends. People (your girl) go back to school or back home or...they start a job and they disappear from your eyes - your heart your mind...its as if they were suddenly snatched away - swallowed up in a proverbial ether. The sights, the sounds, the smells - perfume, suntan lotion, salt water spray - it was all so perfect and suddenly gone. The townie boy or guy who fell deep and hard in love longs for it all to come back and to never stop. The beach is as cold and empty as your heart and soul now that it all has suddenly ended. You want it back but it isn't going to come back. All you have is the sweet memory so rich and so fresh you can hear, smell, taste, feel the summer sun on your skin - and now its cold and empty. All of this is perfectly conveyed in the original - studio version of the song. This "contemplative" version is odd - its like its been decades since that special summer love was lost. The man is old(er) and by that stage he should have got on with his own life and had his own career and family. The original / studio version is just right - the man is a townie...its only been a few weeks or maybe a month since it all ended. He hasn't had time to get over it. He is feeling raw - empty like the beach. I would LOVE to see you do a reaction video to the studio version of this song.

Don Henley is a genius, with exceptional talent. That's a given. His voice needs no affirmation. (Glen Frey said "even I don't sing as much as I could - we have Don Henley")! His advancing narrative style of song writing/storytelling is a lesson in how it should be done. His drumming, while not in the "Steve Gadd/Drummer God" class, is exactly what the song needs (so perhaps, maybe, it is in that class). And then, there's The Last Resort. Glen Frey said that The Last Resort is the best song Don Henley ever wrote. I'm certain that's up for discussion, but it would take a strong arguement to prove him wrong. (Have a listen. React if you want, but really, just listen. It's a lesson in songwriting (and history), not so much a vocal lesson.Well ..) So this version is 3 tones down from the original. Who cares. His voice has aged. The song, and his delivery, hasn't. And, to me, that's all that matters. The older you get, the harder this song hits. I was 17 when this came out. Finally, RIP Randy Meisner. Another Eagle flies no more. Edited to add link to The Last Resort. Have a listen, reaction not necessary. kzbin.info/www/bejne/in3FhqqOo82VrJo

Grew up listening to the Eagles and Don Henley when he went solo. Loved your analysis. Would love your reaction to this Steve Winwood acoustic cut of Can't find my way home: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6C2n2WPYsdpras
