I honestly dont know how Epica isnt much bigger. They do metal/operatic dynamic the best, imo. Also, Simones vocals are god tier. You can really hear her control and versatility on albums like Design You Universe and Requiem For The Indifferent. Crescendos, belts, head voices...ahes master class.

You should know she was pregnant during this show, if I remember correctly she was like halfway. Which makes this performance even more impressive since surely a half-grown baby in your belly takes away some lung capacity.

I love this show so much and think Simone was great, but I have seen quite a lot of online flak about her performance as some people felt she struggled with her vocals. While I don't agree with the hate, I do think there is some degree of truth to that. She was pregnant during the show. I may not know much about this sort of thing, but I know that there is only so much capacity inside a person and babies tend to monopolise that and then some during pregnancy, so I am interested in understanding the challenges a pregnant singer would face.

There are so many alternate histories here. What if Floor and Sander had not forced Mark Jansen out of After Forever? Would we have ever heard of Simone? What if Epica had not invited Floor to join them for incidental songs when she was recovering from her burnout, despite some bad blood between her and Mark Jansen (It might be relevant to note that that Mark Jansen is a university trained psychologist)? Would Floor have accepted the (then) temporary Nightwish position at the trailing end of her burnout? What if Annette had not published her infamous rant comparing herself to Rihanna and torching the band for letting the Denver show go on? Given all of the talents involved, I believe everything worked out perfectly. There is a novel hiding in here, but I am not going to write it. Having been a fan of both Floor and Simone since their earliest recordings, I will say that Simone has really impressed with her growth as a singer. Studio was always great, but in the earlier live performances but she was sometimes unsteady. No longer! As to this song, it is absolutely beautiful. Epica is often quite cerebral, but this song is about a friend who died of an overdose. Chasing the Dragon apparently is code for looking for your next fix. I was already subscribed but I am glad to give you a like for your great reaction to this underrated song.
@MarcelCox12 жыл бұрын
Hello Beth, Thanks for reacting to this song. It is among my favorite Epica songs, but alas it is not so often reacted to, in spite of this being a song which really allows Simone to shine. Now if you want to see Simone sing a completely different style, I suggest you check out her singing for Ayreon in the song “This human equation” kzbin.info/www/bejne/onzaknWAoriIptU . This performance is so … NICE!

You mention only two singers that make various sounds within their songs, but there’s also Dimash and Devin Townsend. You’ve reacted to Dimash enough times not to forget him doing that. I don’t think anyone has the number of timbres in his palate that Dimash does. And also, Katrina Velarde and KZ tandingan in particular do a lot of the various sounds in their songs. KZ can sound like instruments literally. And by the way so can Celine Dion and Rachelle Farrell.

8:27 *right before the moment that always gives me goosebumps and you pause, how dare you? /j Anyway, this is the Epica I really like, things I don't like in the band started in the album this song is in, they wanted albums with over 70 minutes of songs, so, you often get masterpieces like this (this song is my 2nd fav from the band) and completely bad songs like Beyond Belief that has not a single good thing about it, reused riffs, reused tones, reused everything, the thing is, as time went on, they started reusing more and more things, and forgot about the great masterpieces they made in the past, that was what driven me off Epica. But hey, the last album is great, while there is some reused stuff there, there are mostly new attempts at composing, and most songs have a great feeling to it, Abyss of Time is such a great song.
