As Geoff has said, it helps to get older too, as he is now 41 and the voice drops as you age, but it won't be that much for everyone. His latest with VoicePlay, The Dragonborn Comes, from the game Skyrim, is stupendous too. And yes, it's Geoff's smooth tone that sets him apart. Plus his clear diction, I love that.

True true, I am a baritone at 19 but I am on the cusp of being considered a bass, as on a good day I have a very clear chest D2. Its rare that anyone will be able to sing a good first octave in chest but some of these bass singers are true basso profundo and are capable of it. With the right fry technique and extended techniques you can really expand your range though. My full range now is C1-E5. I should be capable of at least a chest B1 as I age and expand with chest fry and subharmonics, but I am also working to keep and expand my high range. My range goal as a singer is B0-C6. I want a good chest B1, steady fry or subs below that, and a strong rock head voice like Matt Bellamy of Muse, its been a dream to be able to hit the notes he does live.

Geoff will tell you he is a baritone singing down using subharmonics. His background is more Disney musical theater. Large range like the other 2 big American acapella basses Tim Foust (who was a tenor and really fought to get back and keep his higher notes) and Avi Kaplan (opera training) who only use firebreathing for their lowest notes. Those 2 have also done Misty Mountains. Geoff had developed alot of his multiple layering parts during quarantine, a technique first introduced by Peter Hollens, and has quite a few. 16 Tons is a fun one of his. Geoff also does dramatic readings.
@bronsonleach35732 жыл бұрын
I think Geoff is more of a baritone bass because he can sing really high for a bass. I am more of a basso profundo because I speak with a naturally fry sound in my voice. I can sing baritone notes and some tenor but I can't sing the full ranges of them and I need to really change my mouth shape and how I produce sound for each octave. I also use subharmonics but I hardly notice be my voice kinda naturally has a fry sound but I can hit crazy low notes hit the lowest note on the piano the issue is that note would never be used singing because it is to low to hear.

What is also common to them is that they report that their low range developed when they trained their high range. Tim Foust explicitly recommends to practice your high falsetto to improve your low end.

Such a good reaction! Geoff has a video on how to sing really low Bass, but I got a lot more out of Tim Foust when he did an interview with the Charismatic Voice... he teaches how to sing Bass, and he said he tells his students to develop their falsetto, and higher ranges. They are already pushing their lower ranges, they need control through their entire range to make their bass singing better. Really interesting. But I agree, there aren't a dozen singers in the world as capable as Geoff... through his entire range. I would REALLY appreciate you reacting to his 'Blackbird'. It's just a jaw dropping pretty song, but it is almost like Geoff was preparing for a job interview and he wanted something for when they say 'show me something that shows what you can do'. 'Blackbird' is one of my favorite things to watch professional singers react to. It's just such rich reaction-fodder, and I think you would have very interesting things to say about it.

Great reaction and analysis. He has a fascinating voice. Btw, I really wouldn't recommend trying to stretch your register down, at least not without a professional advising you. The lowest note that I can hit comfortably is a G2 and I sing most covers an octave down, both because it's more comfortable and I enjoy the reaction it often gets. Back in the late '90s, when I was playing coffee houses regularly, I forced my voice down to an E2 for a cover of Bob Seger's Turn the Page and after performing it a few weeks in a row, I ended up with a sore throat that lasted a few months and it took the better part of a year before I could even get back down to a G2. I think my vocal chords must have tightened up as a reaction. Even now, I have to be careful careful down there. Trying to go below G2 gets painful pretty quickly.

@@Deerhunterjs Unfortunately, I can't help you with volume. I have a very quiet voice, even when I speak. It's something I struggle with whenever I film a cover. @@Deerhunterjs Subharmonics would be really interesting in country. I think that's how Geoff Castellucci managed to hit that really big sounding low note in the video. Th fundamental was a G2, but he has to have some other harmonics and maybe some fry going on for it to sound like that.
@danielsaunders71162 жыл бұрын
@@Deerhunterjs I agree with John, that spoken tone helps going lower; I have a stammer (mid word stutter) I’ve found going low the stammer has helped get down to the first octave, think it was G1 but it ended up hurting after trying to repeat, was trying a cover of the Sound of Silence when it happened; I’m fairly comfortable down to a D2 though, I do this through a spoken tone; I’ve stolen the Johnny Hawkins method of vibrato and have been able to work it down to a B1, I just sing cause I like it; so don’t really have a genre I follow, am most comfortable with slower stuff though, occasionally I’ll try a bit of fry but still working on that; missus loves it when I sing Alanis’ - Thank You in the first and second octave though……………………… Just practice mate, I still pay people to help me race better even though I’ve been on race tracks since I was 7; no shame in in getting the right support to better yourself; I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s even an app for it

You can learn quite easily, but not at his age. Older guys will understand what I mean here. It also helps that his natural speaking voice is very low to begin with. I sang high Baritone for a very long time, one of my favourite songs was Desperado by the Eagles. When I hit around 55, my voice dropped for a second time and now, I can barely hit half the notes of that song. However at 62, I can now sing along quite easily with Geoff in this song and even hit some of his lower notes down to a D1. He can go to B0, I can't get that far down, but I'm not a professional singer like he is, so I don't fully understand the techniques. I found out recently that my D1 is still chest voice when I thought I was singing it using subs. If I learned how to do subs properly, I could probably go lower than Geoff, but it's a bit late for me to start learning new singing techniques, I get out of breath just going up a few steps these days :)
