A wonderful “tribute” to Thurl Ravenscroft who’s quartet originally recorded this. Thurl was the voice of the cartoon Grinch and Tony the Tiger plus the quartet sang many Disney movie songs. VoicePlay covered another song Thurl did: Grim Grinning Ghosts. Thanks for your reaction

You can definitely tell Geoff studied Thurl quite a bit... his normal bass singing (minus the subharmonics) is very similar. I am a bass singer from Battle Creek, Michigan; home of Tony The Tiger, so I definitely know who Thurl is.

It's interesting you mention the practice needed. In a fairly recent interview he said when he started doing those insane subharmonics, Voiceplay (the group he's in) would put songs that required those toward the end of the show to ensure his vocal chords were fully warmed up and able to relax they way they need to for him to do that. He also indicated that the actual volume on those was fairly low and he more or less was all but eating the mic when done live.

Hot and bothered by Geoff? Check out his version of 'Blackbird', and 'Misty Mountains Cold'. Voiceplay just released their 'Halo' theme song, and Geoff hits his lowest note yet in that arrangement, as well as a touching tribute (watch the whole Halo video, not just the music section...) Also, Goeff is covering the original Headless Horseman by Thurl Ravenscroft, and intentionally singing like Thurl. That's why he sounds a lot like Tony the Tiger, Thurl Ravenscroft did the 'IT'S GREAT!' Love your reactions!

Thanks for the fun reaction to an amazing vocalist! You would enjoy checking out Home Free who sport four amazing vocalists and a beatboxer who is certifiably from another planet! Tim Foust is Home Free's bass (although he migrates freely through baritone and tenor ranges). Check out "Folsom Prison Blues" for some choice subwoofer ear candy. Their "Do You Hear What I Hear" is stunning (arranged by their beatboxer Adam Rupp). In short, pick out a Home Free chart and set a pillow on the floor for your chin to land on. Again, great reaction to Geoff's work!

I recently showed both this as well as Geoff's 16 Tons version to a friend of mine. She is 71 years old, but she also said that his voice get's her hot and bothered. That he seems to be very smooth on the eyes of the ladies doesn't seem to hurt, either. 😁 So, any ladies listening to this, don't worry, even a straight guy like me would probably agree if he wanted to fool around after singing some low notes like that. It just reaches something primal within us.

Ehyo! Just wondering, when you say that for lower notes, the vocal cords get shorter, was that a mistake, or did I misunderstood? Because it is quite opposite. Take a grand piano for example. The lower the note, the longer the string. The same has been applied to fanned frets guitars. The same is true for vocal cords: you need to relax your vocal cords to make lower notes. But also, it means there is a physical limitation to low notes (while technically, with enough practice, Geoff could learn to squeeze his vocal cords enough to go as high as Mariah Carrey--doubt it's practically possible)

Omg i love that song. I'm not a pro but I recommend focusing on remembering to breath before the last sentence comes. You should also do breathing exercises like " breath in, and breath out on ssssss first for 8 second then 10, 12, 15, 20, and so on" just don't try to hard, just be relaxed and try as you can

oh I know what note you’re talking about! I’ve performed that song and I’ve taught several students how to sing it. You’ll want to practice thinning out your sound. You can try connecting that by connecting your vocal cords together with a cartoon type voice. Think cartoon squeaky voice. Very annoying, yes but it will train your breath control. Please don’t practice taking in a deeper breath. This will most likely cause more tension. In my 16 years teaching I’ve found that the problem is lack of cord connection and not lack of air. Check out the Breath Support Master Class in the Karaoke Club. It an hour intensive class teaching you how to control your breath correctly. Then watch the Mixed Belting Master Class to help create that cord connection I was talking about. Check it out here: www.SingWithAudrey.com
