This went beyond just being a catchy song. It went beyond a viral hit. This is the essence of ART in its purest form. It's the ability to pour yourself into whatever medium you operate through. The experience he described here is universal, something all humans can connect with. He has had a harder journey than most, dealing with his health issues, but he found a way to demonstrate his own personal struggles in a way that resonates with everyone on this planet. Just, no. It's lovely to see people blown away by Ren, but it isn't about 'defeating' the 'devil'. It's about coming to terms with the shadow that lies in all of us. It's a Jungian concept which has nothing to do with faith. Both are 'true', both are useful it's about balance,as he repeatedly explains.

Tara, Ren is ill again and receiving treatment in Canada, spread his work all you can, this genius needs us to help him any way we can. He is changing lives, lets all help him change his. I pray this young genius finds comfort and healthy peace, my god he has earned it. Ty Ren, you have truly changed me, didn't think a song could do that to this 50 year old man, who is still in therapy for the demons cast upon me by my past, yes, we must stand up and battle on, but you are right, we must relax. I hear you brother.
@JensRandolff Жыл бұрын
I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn’t a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every “Hi Ren” reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. “Hi Ren” is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 8 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker, plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” just to name a few. As I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II). Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," “War Pigs,” “Roadhouse Blues,” "My Generation," “Paint It Black,” "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong” are awesome. On “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Praise You” (Fatboy Slim Cover), “What Kind Of Woman Is This,” all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren is scheduled to release his newest song on his birthday, March 29, at 2 P.M. CST.

"I know we're getting deep here, but he started it." Ren brings that out in us. He is incredibly gifted, and a musical chameleon, bending and blending genres, digging deep into the psyche one moment then being silly the next, then shredding guitar on a street corner. Along with the psychosis, he contracted Lyme's disease as a teen, which was misdiagnosed for YEARS, causing a great deal of harm. He is currently in Canada, receiving extensive treatment for that...but also still making music. His entire catalog is well worth exploring.
@Parula06 Жыл бұрын
Most likely the Lyme caused his psychotic episodes, actually. Untreated Lyme causes a huge ongoing autoimmune reaction, wherein the linings of the neural pathways in the brain are attacked, often causing psychotic symptoms. Of course, he was in such crippling pain by that time that the pain itself could have caused psychotic breaks. He caught Lyme well before the psychotic problems. The advancing ravages of his Lyme Disease were incorrectly diagnosed as Bipolar Disorder and M.E. (Chronic Fatigue) for years.
@salishseamermaid Жыл бұрын
@@Parula06 yes, I'm aware of all of that, but Ren also describes hearing voices and other anomalies from well before he contacted Lyme's. There's no doubt, however, that the Lyme disease created a far worse situation.
@Parula06 Жыл бұрын
@@salishseamermaid Not disagreeing with you at all, I read about his childhood "voice in his head" that he shouted into silence. I should have been more specific about what I was referencing, the symptoms he was experiencing after a few years of Lyme (as I understand it, both psychotic episodes and the onset of autistic behaviors) that drove him to seek a heavy duty regimen of powerful antibiotics he'd heard about. Which cleared up both symptoms, interestingly. Didn't reverse the brain damage, of course.

Ren is the most versatile artist of the day. This was utterly brilliant. From here go to the Jenny & Screech trilogy. Part rap, part sung, acted throughout and each section done live in a single take. It's brutal, violent and the language in places is profane. However, the story is immensely powerful, and the ending will stun you!! After that, if it's vocals you're after, catch him with his band The Big Push busking on the streets of Brighton, or collaborations with Sam or Chinchilla. Honestly, there seems to be nothing he can't do. His fans are just hoping that his current treatment for severe chronic illness in Canada is successful. We need this man!

But even though Ren doesn't have the range that Dimash has Ren's music is on another level way above Dimash's. Ren's music is the real deal that connects with all ages all races and cuts straight to the heart. Even with his short music videos they are a masterpiece of story telling . If Ren had not been sick he probably would have a lot more videos out there . His talent just oozes out and he honesty wants to share and help heal so many broken people by putting his truth and private life in his music for everyone to hear. He does have some light happy and sometimes a bit fun/silly songs but they are brilliant as well. Please Tara don't miss out on the Ren train. Since you understand that it is Hope that is rebutting the Evil voice at the end then you will know that when Ren is saying that he was taking some time to be distant and that he was sick half of his life that it is Hope that was sick for half of Ren's life...but is definitely taking this time now in this video to be heard and hopefully will live on in Ren's music.

Great reaction to masterpiece!! I think Ren is just getting started, even after a decade of amazing music, I think his best is yet to come!!

Being a vocal coach, you would perhaps find it beneficial to check out Ren in his 'singing' songs. "Chalk Outlines", "How to Be Me", "Humble", and "Crutch" are all 4 amazing songs with an amazing performance. The 1st 3 are sang live for even greater analysis of his vocals. You can skip the rap songs as they aren't in your wheelhouse. If those interest you, you could dive deeper into some of his street vocals with his band "The Big Push". He is pretty amazing in many genres.

Amazing how he connects to people. You hear him, you FEEL him. I am pretty sure he did this in one take. The inspirational artist who save lives.

I'm so glad you watched this. This is one of the best things I've ever seen. I'm not exaggerating. He opens his heart and shows it to us, and does it in the most creative way that he could have.

One of my favorite reactions to this song and I’ve pretty much watched them all!

Ren plays piano, guitar, percussion, cello, and of course he’s a beast at producing beats. He sings, he raps, he is art encompassed and portrayed through every part of his being. He truly is a musical genius.

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made this work of art? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

I was so excited when I saw you did a reaction to this and you didn't disappoint. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and supporting this amazing artist. Best reaction I've seen to this. Well done. "Hope" by NF is a similar piece of art. Would love to see your reaction/breakdown of that song as well. Thanks again Tara.

I really loved your emotive review, packed with such comprehension and analysis. Extremely perceptive but also wonderful in reaction to the emotional performance. You followed the flow like a pro, and I loved your take on the shadow voice, particularly when he was most exposed and powerful. Wow indeed! Chef’s kiss!

The video is not a one-take (audio may have been). Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed it, clarifies that in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's reaction to the song.

I’ve listened to and watched this music video revelation of Ren’s a ton. Loved watching your reactions throughout. Appreciated your thoughts and commentary.
I just saw part of your reaction on TikTok and jumped right over here. I loved your reaction. It looks like there are a lot of suggestions for Chalk Outlines, but I think his singing is best on his Fred Again retake. Just Ren, his guitar, and a beautiful view of Calgary, Canada. 🙏
