Mickey always had such a clean, perfectly pitched, well in the upper register type of voice; as well as the delivery he gave during live performances. He definitely was never given the recognition he deserved for the outstanding talent & vocal gift he was given at birth, and practiced in-depth to hone it into becoming of the best front-man rock band vocalists of the 70's-80's era.

Haven't heard of Mickey Thomas? He's on the Mount Rushmore of great vocalists with Steve Perry, Brad Delp and Freddy Mercury. Mickey's talent really shined when he was with Elvin Bishop, and not just in Fooled around and fell in love. But some other Elvin songs feature Mickey's lead and background vocals. You can hear the gospel influence in his singing. By far one of the best to ever hold a mic

This is truly astonishing for a live rendition of this. Not many people can sing like Mickey Thomas. But if you get a chance, definitely go check out the studio cut of this, although this is pretty close, but it's just a bit better fidelity and he hangs up on that E5 quite a bit more at the end rather than in this he chose to stay down on the B4 for some of that, although definitely he still ended up there a lot. But you would love it I'm positive.

Your 'Ann Wilson' is in fact Grace Slick, the drive and huge talent behind Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship. Testament to this is the later departure of Micky Thomas to a solo project which save from one single 'It's Not Enough', completely bombed. Hmm 🤔, let's not go all crazy or jump to conclusions. Mickey is awesome, but not Steve Perry awesome. After all, that *_IS_* why they call (Steve Perry) him, "The Voice". Not to say there aren't any better out there, but if there are, I haven't heard them yet, and I've been in/around the music business almost all my life, and yes, that was just my opinion ... I'm not an authority on it, that's for sure.

@@patriciameyer8798 There's proof right there, opinions are like assholes ... everybody's got one. You just happen to be on the low side of the argument. Not that your opinion doesn't matter, it most certainly does, but you would be in the minority making that argument. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mickey, Jane being my favorite song of his, but as far as writing skills, output and sales goes, Steve Perry blows him out of the water. So, while I can appreciate your fondness and devotion to Mickey, I think the world would pretty much agree, that Steve is the better, more accomplished, talented and influential singer of the two. Steve didn't join Journey to JUST be a singer, he wrote or co-wrote most of their songs, which is why they seemed tailor-made for him. Mickey did not. Additionally, when live, Steve is the most consistent ... bringing studio polish and quality to every show he does but this is where Mickey falters. Some people think that sounding a little off when performing live makes them more "rough" or endearing, but when I go to a concert, I'm usually not interested in hearing a new or rougher version of the songs I love. I want to SEE them do what I could only hear them do before, so singing a tune in a different way or changing up the speed or syncopation really grinds on me ... a LOT !!! And, that's MY opinion. Sorry 🙏...

Jefferson Starship was one of my favorite bands in the early and mid 80's. I got to see Starship at the legendary Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA (made famous by the fatal plane crash of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper in the 50's). They did a great performance. I wanted to meet Mickey Thomas just to express how amazing his voice is. He was the only member of the band that refused to meet their fans. There were 3 of us that could see him behind the stage in a room. I read his lips and he said "they're just staring at me" and the guy he said it to slammed the door shut. Very disappointed he was such a snob. (But I still love his voice and those songs)!

Jefferson Starship was originally a side project of Jefferson Airplane guitarist Paul Kantner. They made one trippy sci-fi album in 1970 called Blows Against The Empire, which did include members of the Airplane, the Dead and CSNY. When the Airplane broke up a few years later, Kantner, Grace Slick and Airplane founder Marty Balin put together a more commercial AM radio band and recycled the Jefferson Starship name. They went through several personnel changes, and the line-up included veteran rockers like David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service), Johny Barbata (The Turtles, CSNY) and Aynsley Dunbar (John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Mothers Of Invention and a zillion others). I'm more of a fan of the Airplane than the Starship, but the Mickey Thomas era of late 70s/early 80s is my favourite incarnation of the Starship, with a sound that was heavily influenced by Boston - hell, they basically copied them, but in a good way. The piano intro of Jane was their answer to the piano intro of Cold As Ice by Foreigner.

Forgot how great Mickey and Grace were live. Sounded really close to the studio recordings.

I’d love for you to do one of Mickey Thomas singing I Fooled Around and Fell in Love, which i think is a sublime example of his vocal abilities.

Apparently true story: Toto was congratulated by record management on the success of their new single "Jane", confusing "Jane" which sounded similar to Toto's "Hold The Line" because of the piano riff along with high pitched male vocal.

Haha, listening to this I was thinking myself how similar this song was to songs by Toto. Piano, high vocals, slashing guitars. Both wonderful, in any case.

Wow. I remember when this album dropped and I bought the CD and my friends and I played the hell out of it. What a great song selection and you sounds terrific on this! I love the delivery and that is so poignant at the end just trailing off in a breath. You really captured the mood of it for sure.

So now that you’re checking out, Mickey Thomas and his voice with Jefferson Starship you need to check out Mickey Thomas when he was singing for Elvin Bishop. There’s a song called. I fooled around and fell in love. It’s by Elvin Bishop but Mickey Thomas sings lead on that song. you need to look that up! You need to listen to that because that really highlights Mickey Thomas voice and the different things he can do with that voice it’s amazing!
