Judy Garland was an American actress and singer. She attained international stardom and critical acclaim as an actress in both musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on the concert stage. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is a song written in 1943 by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Frank Sinatra later recorded a version with modified lyrics.

Timeless beauty and soul. This film came out in 1944, 3 years into WWII and more than a year before it ended. You can imagine how emotionally raw people were. No one better to sing to the masses at that time than the incomparable Judy.

Judy Garland makes me want to cry as well when she sings. I know they don't sound anything alike but the recognizable tone and beautiful vibrato reminds of Angelina Jordan, especially now that Angelina is older. As a senior citizen I've come to love the music and songs of my parents. Angelina lead me to the new found knowledge, respect and enjoyment of that music. At soon to be eighteen years old, Angelina is a master singer, songwriter, musician who generates emotion like Judy does. Thank you Beth for doing this reaction to one of the greatist voices ever, Judy Garland.

My favorite part has always been the final note on the word “now”. She holds the note with no vibrato which makes it sound childlike and the lets in the vibrato at the end. So effective.

This is, by far, my favorite Christmas song for two reasons: First, it's such a beautiful melody with gorgeous chords. Second, it has the lyric "Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow"

Muddle through somehow is part of the dark original lyrics. They changed some of the lyrics for the movie but left in that line - Sinatra changed them again because he thought it was too dark still.

You have to imagine for the little girl hearing Judy singing that very moving emotional song with that angelic voice of Her's right next to her of course it would cause anyone especially a child to flow real emotional tears....i can only imagine what the inside the body feeling effects that was happening with that little girl's (Heart, and Soul) felt like during that moment. we all can agree we must know that it was a 100% Forever Unforgettable Moment in that girl's life.

It blows me away that she was 22 years old when she performed this song. To me, it has always been the saddest rendition of the song I have ever heard. Her voice has s much gravitas I assumed she must have at least been in her 40's when I first heard it. So beautiful and heart-felt. I don't think the Gumm Sisters were particularly known as singers of Christmas songs, though it is a fact that Judy's very first stage performance as a toddler was a performance of "Jingle Bells." In her later career, in addition to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," Judy sang three other notable Christmas songs, two on a 1941 single ("The Birthday of a King" b/w "Star of the East"), and one more titled simply, "Merry Christmas," in the movie *In the Good Old Summertime* (1949). "Merry Christmas" was written by the songwriting team of Fred Spielman and Frances Torre, who would go on to write a television musical based on *A Christmas Carol,* called *The Stingiest Man in Town* (1956).

You should watch "The Family Stone." One of the best (and generally unknown for some reason) Christmas movies ever. It makes great use of Judy singing this song, to seriously tug the heart strings.

I watched her TV show 60 years ago as a kid. My parents and grandparents would stop everything on Sunday nights and watch her with watery eyes. She was a ball of nerves, heavily made-up, and obviously not well. But, they loved her. She lived in their hearts.

I know Judy forced them to rewrite the lyrics to be less dark and gloomy but it's still a really sad moment in the film. She's trying to cheer her little sister up while she herself is feeling like her life has just been ruined herself.... And that voice! ❤

These old movies really bring out the Christmas spirit! With all the stuff going on in places like Gaza and Ukraine, it's tough to keep that spirit alive, but it makes it even more important for each of us to keep the light within, and shine it on to others.

I believe that the transatlantic accent had a more functional reason. The sound technology in that era could catch it much better. It's the same reason why radio annoucers in yhe old days had a higher-pitched voice as well.

Every time I hear the original "Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow" I get a little choked up. I think Rosemary Clooney sang it that way on ER once (a bit of a casting gag since her nephew was and is George Clooney), first with "Hang a shining star" then with the original. But... yeah, it's such a melancholy song that... at certain times in the holiday season if it says "We'll have to muddle through somehow" you might just break down with "HOW do I muddle through?" But hey, it's not the only Christmas song that gets me emotional. See also "When the River Meets the Sea" (written by Paul Williams, sung by John Denver with the Muppets) and, of all things, "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" by N*SYNC (that was the song that the Christmas Lights/Fireworks Show at the theme park I worked at played as the outro song. That's the most likely explanation).

Beth The Vibrato is of that Era. My mother used to do Shirley Temple Numbers as a child and whenever she sang she always had that really fast Vib. Social History time where did she sing? On the bar at her fathers local Public House & other venues, she was born in 1927. Judy Garland and the other celluloid singers of the 1930- 50s.

The song originally began "Have yourself a merry little Christmas/ It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past. Have yourself a merry little Christmas / Pop the champagne cork / Next year we may all be living in New York". Frank Sinatra made the last major change in 1957 when he recorded it for his "A Jolly Christmas" album, when he asked the songwriter to change the line "Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow," to "hang a shining star upon the highest bough." because it wasn't jolly enough. The original lyrics are available on line and are very interesting to look at.

People tend to forget that much of the "Christmas Canon" is songs written during wartime or the great depression when people were literally unsure if they would see their loved ones or even their homes during holiday season. The struggle was real for everyone.

That was really the golden age of song. Singers were popular because they could sing, not because they were the prettiest or great dancers or song writers -- not that there's anything wrong with having multiple talents, but there can be an advantage to having the best singers doing the singing.

Nobody mentioned yet about the director (soon to be Judy's next husband, Vincent Minelli) told Margaret O'Brien that her dog had died (a lie) to get her to look sad enough listening to the song (how cruel!). SNL recently turned that premise into a sketch with Kate McKinnon you must watch. Judy was stuck doing ingenue and tom boy rolls, forced to take "diet" pills and sedative for many years, and caught in a barbaric studio system leading to her early death. Liza repeating her suffering, too.

Happy Christmas 🌲❄☃🎅Beth It ONLY looks like a "creepy" beginning because it is taken out of context from the rest of the film and the little girl has a unique laugh, that to some might sound "not-quite-right". By definition, this song is melancholy and reflective song from the onset. As you stated, thanks to Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, this song got an infusion of 'hope' to what can be 'possible'. This is NOT supposed to be an up tempo "Holly Jolly Christmas" tune. It is more along the pace and sentiment as "Silent Night", "I'll Be Home for Christmas", "Please Come Home for Christmas", or "I Don't Want to Spend Another Christmas Without You". Hope and Wish you had a WONDERFUL Christmas surrounded by family, friends, and all your closer / dear people. May it have been a night and morning full of good food, pleasant fun, and the warmth of love. Don't EVER forget how smart, talented, proficient, and remarkable woman you TRULY are. 🎤🎶🎵🎹

Great reaction, as always. Of course, Garland is one of the most talented singers and actresses in history. Angelina Jordan performed a slow, melancholy version of "Have Yourself" -- albeit with the more upbeat lyrics -- here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZPOeWmNgalmg6s. She was 15 years old. James Taylor famously performed this song a few years ago using the original lyrics.

It's too bad her demons caught up to her later in life, as it really did affect her career. Got her fired from Annie Get Your Gun, Barkleys of Broadway, Royal Wedding (fired/quit), and of course the mess of Valley of the Dolls (where the story sadly ended up becoming reality) - plus most likely lost her Take Me Out to the Ballgame; the studio refusing to let her do the original version of Mame (even though Jerry Herman really wanted her); her problems made the Star is Born production drag on way too long that she was out of the running for Brigadoon (there was originally much more singing for that character - it was rewritten so that she danced to accomodate Cyd Charise). I'm sure there are more instances where her behavior or reputation cost her roles. Whatever else, though, she was as talented a singer/actress as we've seen.

Judy’s life was a torrent of all the things wrong with Hollywood. Right from the jump. On set of the Wizard of Oz she was constantly bullied and abused by everyone on the cast and in the production from the director to the munchkin actors. She was forced to work 14-16 hour days, made to smoke cigarettes (to suppress her appetite because they starved her all day because they thought she was “too fat”, had to wear a corset and nose prosthetic, fed uppers to keep her working & downers to sleep creating lifelong addictions. The sorrow and darkness in her voice you hear in her lesser known songs such as “Never Leave Me”, “Me and My Shadow”, and “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” is her true voice, the only way she could emote what she was really feeling.
