Lyrics may seem a bit silly at first, they are actually dead serious. There are so many layers to the song and a lot of space for different interpretations: The name of the song "In corpore sano" is in Latin and means "In a healthy body". It’s referring to the Latin saying "Mens sana in corpore sano" meaning "A healthy mind in a healthy body". - First: What is the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair? This is a reference to modern society's obsession with beauty! That's what beauty magazines do/they create insecurities about your hair, skin, weight, etc., and then advertise products that promise to change that. That's what the second line of the song is about "I think that the secret is in deep hydration" - Second: Konstrakta talks about how our skin and hair often signal some health issues, for example, liver and spleen problems. The reason she is thinking this is because she's worried about her own health, she can't visit a doctor for a check-up or get treatment because she doesn't have insurance, this is so important because independent artists in Serbia don't have health insurance. - Third: Then we hear her saying how an artist must be healthy, a reference to Marina Abramovic’s (internationally known Serbian performance artist) performances called “Art must be pretty, an artist must be pretty” where she sits for hours combing her hair while repeating that cause she realized people focused a lot on her looks and her hair being messy and prioritized that over her art, and the reason she needs to be healthy is that she can't afford to get treatment. - Fourth: the "Autonomic nervous system" part talks about how we don't need to control our own heartbeats. She describes how she walks her dog, on a beautiful summer day, her heart beats on its own, it doesn't need to get any better. She just puts her trust in her heart hoping it won't fail her (if it does fail her then that's it, the doctors won't help her and she made peace with that), and that's why she prays to God, "God give us health". - Fifth: She then says "I DON'T HAVE THE HEALTH INSURANCE!" (Even with "free" health insurance we are still paying a lot for medications, fees, etc. We are always paying insurance through salaries, for both employed and unemployed, and if you don't have "free" health insurance, you are paying way more, which is a situation with independent artists in Serbia.) - Sixth: Phrase "Boze zdravlja"/"God grant us health". This is a common saying, we use it all the time, and you will always hear people wishing other people good health (for their birthday, or really any holiday) because everything else (money, fame, love...) becomes meaningless if you are ill and in pain. She then says, the artist (she) is invisible, you can't see me, it's magic because she is invisible to health care, they won't treat her! - Seventh: Now, last part, it's basically the old Latin saying: Mens sana in corpore sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body), except that Konstrakta makes it clear that only the body is healthy, the soul inside is desperate, we are all obsessed with improving our health, we try to eat better, be more active, take all those expensive drugs and supplements, but what about our mind? Mens infirma in corpore sano - Weak mind in a healthy body Animus tristis in corpore sano - A sad soul in a healthy body Mens desperata in corpore sano - Desperate mind in a healthy body Mens conterrita in corpore sano - A frightened mind in a healthy body The endless chanting of the mantra about a healthy body is destroyed by enumerating the weaknesses of the mind and soul from which no health can be born. The final verse of the song "and what are we going to do now" is a jargon of common sense cold shower which was poured over the mass media propaganda about a healthy body without a healthy mind and soul, after making that clear she asks us - So what do we do now? Now about the handwashing: 1) She is dressed in white, she symbolizes the health care system (she reminds us of a nurse for example) and she is washing her hands. Why? Because of covid? NO! It is a metaphor about how health care workers need to "wash their hands off" meaning clear their conscience when they refuse to treat you because you don't have insurance. Just like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the crucifixion of Jesus - he tried to clear his conscience and make it clear that he wasn't the one who killed Jesus - it was the Law. In the same way, many people in the government or in positions are washing their hands off and can't help you because of the Law. 2) People standing behind her can be priests that pray for her health and/or are getting ready for her to die.

Really surprised at how shallow your approach to this performance is. This performance is very artistic and lyrics are actually pretty clever. The whole Megan Markle thing is IRONY, basically saying healthcare isn’t accessible to everyone, people are dying, yet instead of the problem being solved, we are being served with dumb articles about “The secret behind Megan Markle’s shiny hair” etc. In this song she’s addressing a very important problem in Serbia - where artists are pretty much invisible to Serbia’s healthcare system. “An artist must be healthy” but an artist can’t have health insurance and other examples of hypocrisy. Serbian language is very difficult to translate to English, a lot is lost in that translation you were reading online, the lyrics have much more deeper meaning in Serbian.

@@HonestVocalCoach It is a metaphor. She represents health system which washes hands (denies responsibility). Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person (Jesus). He was washing his hands of the responsibility. Whole stage is a metaphor. "Metallic voices" and robotic movements with hands represent estrangement - dehumanization. During performance there's no emotion on her face. She is like robot. She walks her dog. That is another sign of estrangement, proof that our civilization is on verge of extinction. It is sad that dog became man's "best friend". I remember times (I am 67) when my best friends walked on two legs (and without leash - covid pass or passport). Music is, also, descriptive. After "I do not have health insurance" there is GP and rhythm (heart beat) stops there is a "cuckoo" musical effect symbolising psychotic episode - travel to "parallel - alternative world", something like "alternative truth" as Donald Trump said. This is the moment when she shows something like sign of getting something and she continues "How will they be able to keep track of me? (In the name of health". At the end there is sequence of semi-tone steps upward in music called "tonal jump" used to elevate tension towards climax: "So, now what"? Very well done. Do not take everything literary.

Some didn't even have visuals so the audience couldn't guess what it was about by just listening to it and yet many did well. Just last year for instance with Zitti e buoni. No translation, the song was catchy, carried a deeper message and had a good perfomance. This performance is artsy, the visuals with her washing her hands would be an indicator as to what kind of messages she's trying to convey and latin phrases are generally well known but even if people don't get any of the song at least the hand clapping will catch the audience's attention. I'm proud that she represents our country :)

The artist (Konstrakta) has already said that the song is open to interpretation. And already there are hundreds of interpretations everywhere. It really had gotten people to think and discuss the song. She is a singer, but also a performance artist and this performance is a reference to another performance by Marina Abramović. Others will probably share their interpretations, but I encourage you to try and find your meaning in the song. After all, that is what art is about. Every verse can be interpreted in many different ways and so can the obsessive hand washing.

On the scene there are a lots of symbols and signs. Carnation flower in her pocket (Latin origin 'CORONA-ae'), Cross on her uniform , She Pray to God for health, the Cage on the scene, Red Alarm at the end. She is washing her hands because "the artist" must be healthy (WHO: Wash your hands!). The "artist" doesn't have a booklet, a (medical) card, so she wonders how they will follow her in the name of health? After all, the body is healthy, so what do we do now? Latin inverted words from the begining of the song "Mens enfermos in corpore sano" - "A sick mind in a healthy body", at the end with red alarm: In a healthy body, the body IS healthy. And now what? A weak mind in a healthy body A sad soul in a healthy body A desperate mind in a healthy body A frightened mind in a healthy body And now what we shall do? We had Ukraine's flag colours and Covid Sign together, that dissapeared after she concluded that BODY IS HEALTHY, and now what we shall do?

This one is a grower. I think if you stop looking at it as a "song" but rather as "performance art" it really shines. Not understanding the lyrics at first I thought it had to do with covid but according to Serbians it's much more complex than that and can be interpreted in many ways, and in general it has to do with how society does not provide healthcare to artists / self employed people (correct me if I am wrong but a friend of the artist actually died because of this?) and how in general people only are concerned about physical health and beauty but not mental health. I did get the very last bit of the song because it's in Latin and not Serbian, "in corpore sano" is actually a rather popular saying in many latin-speaking countries and it means "in a healthy body (a healthy mind)"

Honestly how can anyone understand this peace of art by looking at only one verse? I mean it is a theatre, an act, which somehow manage to cover at least 6 social problems in only 3 minutes. I love this song, but I think it's understandable that you didn't get what this performance was about without a translation, and sadly I think this is what most casual eurovision viewers will feel as well.

The first time I watched this song I had the same reaction as you haha! I was really distracted by the hands washing and didn't get the lyrics, but the song was quite catchy if a bit weird and the comments were really positive And now I have the same opinion as most in the comments:) I don't know if anyone's said it yet, but it might be also be a reference to another Serbian art performance that's (according to comments & the internet) a bit famous there where an artist sat on the stage for a few hours and instead of painting the painting in front of her she just combed her hair ("art must be pretty, an artist must be pretty" as the lyrics to this song say) Speaking of the lyrics, my favourite part is the last part where she says in latin in a few ways "a sick mind in a healthy body" followed by "what do we do now?" as the last line of the song:)

oh Georgina, I was anxiously waiting for your review! (You did radically shorten your review with this song unfortunately, but I guess that you wanted to be "fair" to those not being particularly interested in your Eurovision reviews). Back to the song - to be honest, I am Serbian and I was quite confused once I heard the song for the 1st time (especially! by the Meghan Markle reference, as her life is not widely followed in Eastern Europe), BUT the lyrics do not build-up up until Konstrakta desperately says "But I do not have health insurance... (at 01:52 of the original video performance)". That's when the whole song gets its unique point in local Serbian background - Serbian musicians do not receive the state health insurance by default and they are not medically monitored by the state health system, as they are recognized as 'self-employed', hence the irony behind the lyrics of the song. However, the lyrics tackling the importance of mental health and the well-thought stage performance do carry a HUGE impact world-wide due to the ongoing pandemic, so this might resonate with everyone, in particular since the whole world was mentally challenged during this pandemic. I do hope that the song gets the attention and ladders up to the finals (and perhaps even get some greater support by the public of UK due to the Meghan Markle reference:)), but I'm more curious to see how the live performance in Torino will be received by the world-wide public! Greets and keep up with the good work! :)

Interesting to note this is your fifth most popular Eurovision video too, whatever we can take from that. I'm thinking this song could creep near the top ten, it's building some momentum.

I swear to god this song really separates people to those who had an education and those that didn't. It's not even about liking it, it's simply about whether you were taught to think and learned at least a little bit of Latin. Yikes

It was the last song I would think Serbia should have kept ..it took a second Listen. Without watching the performance with head phones …she is an alternative artist so they usually put lyrics ahead of the perfect vocal …after I watch again I realized …this was performance art similar to her country Mate Marina abromovic (great tribute) This is definitely a grower I think it will make the top 5 ..it’s catchy and when people see translations it will click Hearth care in Serbia is Public but it’s hard to find ..it’s a mess ..just like the majority of the worlds …a mess ..so this is her talking the worlds Health Care ..we are told eat this eat that ..to be healthy but bottom line is we need help … “ what do we do know” Brilliant song”

Key to understanding this song is symbolism. For Christ's sake, she's not singing about Meghan's hair! Her hair symbolizes public beauty obsession. She's not talking about liver and spleen! That's a symbol of our superficial attitude towards health due to disrespect of the health system. And please read the last few verses! And do think about it. This woman is giving you an opportunity to become more thoughtful. But you're entitled to dismiss the whole thing and remain as you are. Your choice only.

I so agree with the first commenter, I would like to add that I think the reason she mentions Meghan is because she got away from the royal situation! She protected her mental health unlike others, and therefore her hair and skin are healthy, not because of hydration. Its mostly sarcastic and ironic the whole song is layered with hidden messages, poking fun at the whole world for the way every country treats most of the people as expendable! 🍃🐢🌿

Girl, no offense you seem like a sweet woman, but for once there is a non superficial song out there in eurovision! Have you ever done poetry or literature or art at school?! There is so much symbolism in this song, lyrics, performance. It's a piece of art! Every word counts and it talks about the new system and what we've been going through since 2020. Key words coming out of this song and symbolism: health, sane/insane mind, control, freedom, robotic, doctors, people in control not caring (here comes your very good interpretation that her vocals sound as if she doesn't care), scientism, cults etc etc.. it is endless. As for the "out of tune" parts they are on purpose, they add to the whole sanity non sanity of the situation.

Point is that you can lose so much time for nothing, if your mind is occupied by "outside world" without care about your "mental health".

The lyrics and the message are the most important part of the song, which, together with the whole performance, “coreography” and visuals (and her “lazy” singing, which does seem more like reciting”), create a whole concept. Of course she is not singing about Meghan Markle’s hair 🤷🏻♂️ the lyrics have much more layers to it and kind of hidden messages (as already mentioned by others). Sure it’s not a usual catchy pop song or a Eurovision power ballad, but this is what makes it stand out. The fact that it is in Serbian and that it does not have a mainstream vibe to it might affect acceptance among the audience but I think Konstrakta didn’t want to make a “usual Eurovision song” and as a matter of fact, all of her music is kinda alternative and very socially-engaging. And the last verses of the song (In Latin) say all!

While I enjoyed watching your reaction as a vocal coach, I'm very surprised that you did not appear to understand that the whole performance was a message in itself. Consisting of vocals and a theatrical performance. Liking the song or performance or not, is of course, a complete matter of taste and everyone is entitled to their own, but the deeper understanding of this song seemed to have just flown past you. If you decide to take the time to review an artist, you may consider taking a little more time to truly listen and understand the artist/words/performance better.

Please pay attention to the backing vocals. The female ones sound like as if they are singing some kind of a shamanic chant. The male ones are more like from a gregorian choir. They just add up to the whole symbolism.

This song speaks about what magazines are writing about. titles like "what is the secret if meghan markles healthy hair" and how people not looking perfectly from outside must be sick. She is speaking about sad and unhealthy mental health or sad spiri in healthy body and how people concentrate mostly on the outside. Like wash your hands so you dont catch germs but your sadness and emotional illness is less important than what is visible on the outside. People cant be healthy if we keep disintegrate spiritual or emotional from physical because human beings are both. This song is written by pure genius... and is very well describing todays society

From what I've heard, it's about issues with healthcare and administrative in Serbia. Her friend, also an artist, died to leukemia because they didn't have insurance, it took 3 months to get the insurance papers and in meantime the leukemia progressed rapidly and it was too late. The lyrics is very artistic metaphor.

I don’t know if anyone said this in the comments, but for me the lyrics have a deeper meaning. The song begins with a point that an artist must be healthy and how health is essential to all of us. But furthermore, it talks about the broken system in which we live and how we can’t access medical care without insurance. And the catchy chorus then suddenly changes from the artist must be healthy to the artist can be healthy.Unfortunately, sometimes the lyrics get lost in translation, but I love watching your videos! Can’t wait to see more!

The first time I saw this performance, was kind of obvious for me that it was about something more serious, the ironic look, I mean, I feel like everything is telling that there is something deeper in the message, but I am quite surprised that while many people also are aware of that.. .many others don't even suspect about that and even think the performance is a joke... so weird!

The song has deeper messages. She is inspired by the media that inform us that hair, beauty, health are important, but not mental health. He also talks about the system that controls people in the name of health and finally that a sick soul remains in a healthy body, while those who have caused problems to humanity wash their hands of responsibility.

The first message is actually in the first second of the song. So much in just one second. Incredibly. That first message is "We need to see / watch / think better, because EVERYTHING IS UP SIDE DOWN" (my addition: in relation to how we are placed). "Onas eroproc ni amrifni snem" Every day I discover some new amazing details. Brilliant.

I love the song so much and have been hooked on Konstrakta and Zemlja Gruva since I heard it. Wish I knew of her earlier. Well done Serbia for choosing art. I do feel though that a lot gets lost in translation and you kind of loose that satirical way she preforms this, but also I'm surprised at how many people don't know the Latin saying "Mens sana in corpore sano", I just thought it was well known. Anyway I do appreciate that you acknowledge how catchy it is, it's been stuck in my head for days 😅 and even though you probably don't like it you gave an honest yet respectful reaction.

As a Croatian native speaker, I love this song and within the past 2 weeks if has received massive popularity and critical acclaim. The lyrics have multiple subtle references to obsession with health in general and many can be lost in translation. English Wikipedia actually has an excellent article on the song and the reception it received in countries in ex Yugoslavia. The vocal performances which resemble monologues or monodramas are actually quite common in Croatian and Serbian rock, alternative rock and alternative electronic music - it lets artists focus more on the lyrics than the rhyme, which can be more difficult to construct in Croatian/Serbian than in eg. English.
