The yodeling is simply called a “falsete”, which literally translates to falsetto in Spanish. Singing falsetes in Huapangos was popularized by Miguel Aceves Mejía in his time. Arturo Vargas, the musician singing, has perfected his technique with the help of breath control, his natural high register, and proper technique.

Try an evening in Veracruz in the town square in front of the cathedral. The Mariachi come around and play for your table for a few pesos. That's then followed up by El Rancho del Norte bands going bar to bar. You will experience pure joy! I worked in Mexico for 5 years. People tell me they went to Mexico on holiday. Cancun and Acapulco... No. You went to an American interpretation of Mexico! Try Veracruz, Poza Rica, Villahermosa. Then you will experience the true Mexico. It's an incredible country!

Mexico and Ireland have a great history together, from the migrants who moved to Mexico to the St. Patrick's Brigade which helped Mexico out during the Mexican-American War. Who maybe you have an ancestor that dates back to this and that's why you like Mariachi so much. Also, I just assumed you're Irish, but if I'm wrong you have the right to be mad lol.

@@toolrocks10 You beat me to the punch. Many Irish immigrants fought for the Americans but were shunned because of their religion and were treated unfairly which is why many of them jumped sides to the Mexican army. Mexico offered them citizenship and the opportunity to practice their faith for they both were from Catholic cultures. Hence the name the battalion was given “Los San Patricios” (or Saint Patrick’s Battalion) Love this story, also a very cool fact is that former Mexican President Alvaro Obregon is a descendant of an Irish family. They changed their surname from “O’Brien” to “Obregon” to make it “more Mexican” Roughly paraphrasing an article I read but this is definitely fact.

I had the opportunity of seeing Arturo Vargas sing this song twice and throughout the years that he sings this song the more control he gains in his ability to hold this high range notes. He also been known to go even higher and holding those long note even longer especially the "el flatin" and "del pastor" parts in the finale.

Beth, as you were wandering about this type of yodeling was related to certain singers. A short explanation. This type of mexican songs are originally related to an specific region in México: The Huastecas. Being a huapango on their own, these huapangos huastecos included that typical expression of using the flutes and the specially with their yodeling voices. Our typical country music is colored depending on their original regions. The beauty of this song and this fine interpretation herein is just what a fine Maricchi gets. And moreover the rich enhansement by this fine Orchestra. I am glad you enjoyed it.

Yodeling is not a common staple of mariachi music. Mariachi is a 20th century descendant of the "arpa grande" (large harp) band which is originally from Michoacán (Pacific Coast) and dates fron the 18th century. Modern mariachi plays music from many regions of the country (Mexico is large and musically very varied). In this case, the genre of this song is "huapango", a dance originally from the region called "huastecas", which covers a large swath of coastal territory in the Gulf of Mexico. The huapango dates probably to the 17th century and it is this style (not others) that uses yodeling, originally in the choruses. This one you reacted to is a modern huapango written in the 20th century by the twin brothers "Cuates Castilla" and it was popularized by a singer with a very recognizeable (and a bit effectist) yodel (Aceves Mejía, who has been mentioned here). Traditional huapango: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHytYX-daLpqm6s (note the fact that the dance changes when the voice comes in) Aceves Mejía: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn7InXqXpdN-e5Y

I'm so proud of my 🇲🇽 heritage. Mexico has an abundance of different cultures entwined. Our Mexican Bands are often said to be all German Oom-papa. I haven't a clue how to spell that. My 12 just timed this note 15 seconds long and picked right up to another 15 seconds. This Gentleman is a genuine fantastic gift to us all.

Yes!! This song is one of the kinds that just move you with so much emotion. It is absolutely one of our pride and joys! Viva México!🇲🇽 Ps-Have a listen to "Cielo Rojo", Live in Concert by Peruvian-Mexican, Tania Libertad. The lyrics are of a lover asking for a second chance. That without them, the "Sky is Red" of sadness and not blue of joy. OMG, I absolutely love this rendition. Love it! Love it! love it!
