Seattle ‘89, quite possibly the greatest rock concert ever, period new paragraph. Folks talk of Queen at Live Aid ‘85, no doubt it was epic, albeit 24 minutes. Metallica from ‘88 to ‘92 cannot be touched. Hetfield in that time was an absolute BEAST.

I believe this is also the remastered version from the And Justice For All box set. Snare sounds tighter and not as sustained as the original. Original snare sounded much more thunderous from what I remember. Also believe the crowd noise sounds better managed.

I think the live Metallica track that you’d find the most to which to respond, as a vocal coach, is from ‘S&M 1999’ , and it’s ‘The Outlaw Torn’.
@riphopfer5816 Жыл бұрын
During the final verse of this song, there’s a momentary close-up of James’s face, and there’s a look in his ice-blue eyes that causes his visage to be one of the most malevolent I’ve ever seen in real life.

I wrote this comment before even watching the video; I’m impressed you caught all the things that always impressed me about Hetfield as a frontman. I used to have a similarly frightening stare (though my irises are emerald-green, and I have pupils like giant empty holes in space from all the acid I’ve done across the years), 15-22 years ago when I was still a touring musician, and I learned everything about being a brilliant frontman from James Hetfield, Iggy Pop, and Jim Morrison. Massively talented blokes, that lot.

To be able to perform like James takes a lot of energy and stamina. James is getting older and he is still doing that to this day. And he is also fighting his alcohol addiction. I can't imagine how much effort he puts every night. About his aggressive act on stage, I think it is part of his personality. So it comes naturally for him. He vents his anger and aggression through his lyrics, riff, guitar playing, and vocal.

The whole "muscle car" analogy is funny since James LOVES or used to LOVE muscle cars. James can also sing gently and softly if needed. JUST by watching KZbin LIVE performances, it seems that Metallica, Iron Maiden and Ghost are GREAT live. I've seen Maiden LIVE and they are GREAT. This is an older Metallica video of course. BTW, You are still looking good ken:)

James in late 80s and early 90s either had a voice like this-a voice of a 240 lbs Viking with dragon skin as his scarf or voice of 13 yo boy beacuae a lot of time he would lose power in his voice beacuse of incorrect posture. But still theyre MetallicA \m/
@kentamplin5 жыл бұрын
That's quite an array of voices, Teutonic Knight!
@Nightbreed825 жыл бұрын
From my recollection, James' vocals didn't really ever faulter until the late '90s. He's always had that posture (feet 7' apart with the mic 6" off the ground) although I wouldn't call it "incorrect". It's a power stance, for asthetics I assume. Anyway, in all live recordings from the '80s and most of the '90s, both official and bootlegs, James sounded incredible. Some shows were better than others, sure. He blew his voice out recording the Black album and had to change his style somewhat, so maybe this is the loss of power you speak of, but I wouldn't describe it like that. His voice did crack a few times on the Load/Reload tours because I think he was pushing it too hard after it had already been blown out at least once.

My first Metallica concert was in 89' during the Justice tour in Winnipeg. Hetfield was savage and angry and had quite a few beers during the show. As far as vocals go that was his peak, in my opinion, just pure and raw pissed off power!! The sound levels were so loud during that time ...all bands included, Slayer, GNR, ETC, but Metallica was the loudest by a mile and your ears rang for days...miss that. The Cult got booed off stage as the opening act after 2 songs which was pretty funny.

Hey Ken, it is funny you mentioned that story about the subwoofer. I have a similar story about Metallica. When i saw them in 97 on the cunning stunts tour. I was actually at one of the two shows where the DVD was recorded in Fort Worth. It was in this giant convention center. It was this giant etal structure. The entire seating area was metal including the floor and the vibrations, holy crap the vibrations. I felt like my chair was gonna vibrate along the floor. The vibration was so strong at times it would for a second blur my vision.
