truly talented Russians sing with their soul. They sing not to win competitions, not for the sake of popularity, they share their soul with the listener. That's why it happens.

"Black Raven" is a folk revision of the poem-song of the non-commissioned officer of the Nevsky Infantry Regiment Nikolai Verevkin "Under the Green Wet", first published in 1837 in the journal "Library for Reading". The poem "went to the people" and existed as a song in various ways. Belongs to the genre of cruel romances. The song is considered to be Cossack and tells the story of a dying Cossack who asks the raven to tell his relatives about his death. General Peter Krasnov considered it a song of the Don Cossacks during the Caucasian War of 1817-1864. The plot is very sad, riddled with longing and even mysticism. Two main characters: a man and a bird. Both images, the first is a warrior, the second is a raven. A wounded man lies on the battlefield and watches a black forerunner of death circling above him in the sky. The words of the first verse show that the guy still does not believe that his last minutes are coming. All narration is conducted in the first person and belongs to the hero. He promises a predator that he will not become his prey, although he is greatly wounded. However, the raven feels a near demise, spreading its claws. The dying man asks the raven to fly to his homeland and tell his mother that he died in the battle for his land. He also wants to hand over the bloodied scarf to his bride, who gave it to him. With this gesture, it would be like to return freedom to her bride and free her from the promise to wait for him. He further explains the reason. He wants the raven to say that he has found another bride and will soon marry her. In this case, it means death (death is now his bride), which is about to take possession of him. With this bride they were accompanied by a sharp saber of the enemy, and a "hardened arrow" was crowned. And the bayonet of a soldier will be a friend at this wedding with death. In the last verse, the warrior realizes that death overtakes him and tells the crow about it. Multiple repetition of words with the mention of a bird-messenger of bad news gives a special mood and a mournful tragic tone. These images are very impressive and a great sorrow appears in the listener's soul and tears come.

Thank you Frank for your meaningful reaction. This performance is amazing! They stand inside the illuminated circle in the middle of the darkness, so as to be face to face, so that not a single drop of their tormenting energy splashes out in vain, does not dissolve into the void. It is similar to how a powerful optical lens collects all the rays of light at one point, and at this point wood begins to light up and metal melts. Though, at this time in the role of burning wood and boiling metal are the hearts of the listeners. Pelageya in this amazing ensemble acts as a true mental leader as if she rules the singers and the audience with her imperious, strong hand. From the very first second she gives such a crazy energy and suspense to the performance and then constantly pumps it up. At each new turn of the song, she demands from herself and from her wards more and more tension, dedication, self-denial, absolute involvement in this tragedy, so that each of them actually dies under the willow along with the wounded Cossack, and by the end song all of them are metaphysically dead, completely drained of blood, having taken out all the sources of life. This is one of those great performances when at its end all the people involved, both listeners and performers, die for a minute, and then rise again, as happens in the finale of Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony. Pelageya here literally takes out of herself and her wards all the strength of the soul, all the pain of the heart, to the last drop, to the very bottom. Those energetic hand movements that she makes in the course of the performance, as if urging herself and her singers with a whip, like horses, are the most characteristic gestures for the regent of the choir or ensemble, when she demands from the singers to give out even more tension, more fire at the moment when everything, it would seem, is already brought to an absolute limit. Those who sang in the choir or in the kliros will understand what I am talking about.

Hey, Frank! The song is Russian traditional. 'Under the willow' is a song of a wounded dying soldier, going through the flashbacks of his memory...sad and sorrowful song, but full of dignity, humility and courage. Have you recognised Elmira (in dark blue) from the duet in 'Cancao do Mar'?

A little bit more English-friendly lyrics: Under a green willow Lay a wounded Cossack, Oh, under a green willow he did lie. A bird, a crow flew over And started to caw over the willow, Oh, the black raven flew over the Cossack and it cawed In anticipation of a tasty morsel. Oh, don't you caw, black raven, Over my head, I - the Cossack - do still live. Would you fly, black raven, To my parents, to my home. Would you pass a bloodied handkerchief, black raven, To my young wife. Would you tell her, black raven, That I married another, That I found a new bride In an open field over the river. The wedding was quiet, Under a willow, Oh, it was a quiet wedding under a willow. A sharp saber was our matchmaker, And a damask bayonet was my best man, Oh, a sharp saber, and a bayonet as a best man. The field married us quickly, Mother-earth bonded us. Oh, it went quickly, and mother-earth bonded us. So, basically, it's a song of a dying warrior who has no-one near except for a raven waiting for his death.

It's a Russian Cossack song. Cossacks are a military class(caste). The entire life training and war, ah or suppression of rebellions. Rarely was at home and in war there are no musical instruments. There are voices and acapella different voices give a wonderful chorus. the Song is about how a warrior married with death( this is a metaphor for he died).
