Great reaction and analysis, as always. This song brings back so many great memories. It was all over radio and MTV and every guitar player around my age knew it at the time, so it was an easy one to call when sitting around with a few acoustics. I've played and sung it many times. Of course, I didn't sound anywhere near as good as Geoff Tate, but I pulled it off ... well, I pulled most of it off. That "of life" in the first verse is just below my register, so I always had to fudge it a bit by speaking that part. Even so, it was always a lot of fun to sing.

There are quite a few great power ballads out there, but to me this may be the most beautiful with the best arrangement. And I’ve had some lucid dreams before; a very unique experience. What I remember is walking through whatever dream-land I was in, then stopping, with the realization I could actually control what I was doing. Suddenly I had a choice. So I made decisions and did what I wanted to in the dreams, which was unexpected and remarkable.

Can't overstate Michael Kamen's role in this song. He was also known for his work with Pink Floyd. I remember when this song came out, it was like "Okay, little Floyd vibe here." And then "Oooo, really Floyd" and then "Wow, VERY Floyd!" Not to take anything away from the band, they've worn that influence their whole career and have made incredible music. They were our cerebral hair metal band at a time when music was filled with very dumb hair metal bands.
