Guitarist Chris Degarmo wrote this song. It was partially for his son. He's a pilot now. But damn what a talent along with Geoff Tate's vocals.

His vocal range was incredible. On the bands first albums, he often sang incredibly high while also being able to go very low. And he was able to reproduce these notes live as well. One of the favourite songs people react to is the live version of 'Take Hold of the Flame' live in Tokyo.

I sang this song to my sons at bedtime. Every time I hear it I'm back to when they were little and afraid of the monsters in their dreams. I learned how to lucid dream and taught my first son because he suffered from night terrors.

It you check out Geoff Tate's earlier stuff you can hear how crazy his voice would get. For live check out 'Take Hold of the Flame [Queensrÿche - Live in Tokyo 1984/08/05]' From this album you should check out, Empire, & Best I Can, because they have vids. Operation: Mindcrime (album) is considered their magnum opus by most fans.

This song is very much from a parent's perspective. Especially from that of a new parent preparing themselves for some difficult discussions that they're going to inevitably have, like nightmares and other challenges. They're using the setting of a parent sat next to their sleeping infant as a vehicle to work through their own anxieties whilst projecting comfort onto the slumbering child. At least l, that was the gist I got from the story Geoff told before playing this song live. That it's equal parts lullaby and self-pep talk.
@davestang5454
@davestang5454 2 ай бұрын
99% sure this is about a parent who has DIED and comes back to their child through his dreams. Teh child is having nightmares because he was traumatized by the loss of his parent and the parent assures the child, from beyond the grave, that he still loves, protects and guides the child. The real lesson here is that love is the strongest power, even stronger than death.

The song is clearly about more than having a lucid dream. I don't know why people don't get this when they read the lyrics. It sounds more accurately about a child who has lost a parent and is traumatized by it, having nightmares and in fear. The departed parent appears to the child in dreams and comforts him, telling him that he will continue to love, guide and protect the child. The lesson? Love is the strongest of powers, even stronger than death itself. If the song was merely about lucid dreams than the topic of death and the specific things that the child experiences in the dreams would not be mentioned. Bisscuit misinterprets a lot of things.

Yes, you choose the right song from the band. This song is very beautiful and the vocals and spacial sounds are very relaxing in contrast with the mystery and tension of the lyrics. It makes you trip on your mind trying to understand where it goes and the real meaning. I thought the same, a parent's perspective of children's fears from nightmares and scary imaginations.

This song has always made me feel uneasy which is what makes it special to me. The whole section about dream control, it being a powerful weapon and then ending with "help me" puts a whole sinister twist on if you can trust this person beside you in your dream saying they will be "watching over you" and guiding you. The section is distorted like you're hearing people around you talking while you're having this dream.

I remember the beginning of this song was used on the show "Supernatural". It was such an emotional scene when Dean has to go to Hell to hold up his end of a bargain to save his brother Sam. Friggin' Goku died less than these two.
