During Regine’s vocal prime (1990s-2010), belting and sustaining F5s, F#5s, G5s and G#5s were a walk in the park for her. Today, she can still execute those notes smoothly but not as effortless as before.

Regine is the mother of ALL belters in the Philippines. She popularized belting in the 80s that it generated unlimited number of belters in the country emulating her voice and her singing techniques that she became the barometer for singing for the longest time. She has a ton of hit albums and a lot of her songs, both covers and originals, are still being sung today as contest pieces, audition materials, vocal exercise tools or simply a rite of passage before one can be considered a legit singer in the Philippines.

Regine Velasquez voice is surprisingly versatile. Her voice evolves through time. She started singing like Streisand but through the years her voice becomes bright and eventually airy when it ventures pop and r&b. She even said before that melismas isn't natural for her and she has to train her voice doing runs and riffs until her vocal muscles becomes accustomed to it. Her voice compliments acoustics really well esp when it's just guitar and piano as a backing track. She have also experimented with genres such as alternative rock and jazz. Jazz surprisingly compliments her voice really well. Her life story is also humbling and has become an inspiration to many. She won 200 plus regional singing contest until she bagged the coveted "bagong kampeon" which is akin to star search. She won the 1989 asia pacific singing contest which is the eurovision counterpart in asia. Since she has bagged the title asia's songbird. Her stardom have reached asian boundaries and have released multiplatinum album "listen without prejudice" topped asian charts with her song in love with you, a timeless duet with asian superstar Jacky Cheung. She's one of the firsts asian artist who made it outside the local scene when social media and youtube isn't a thing. She is in the league of artists such as Coco Lee, Anggun and Utada Hikaru, all who have represented their own regions globally.

This was recorded live for her album) Musical Medley with Mr. Martin Nievera Piece of Sky - she’s wearing a pink dress.

The Philippines is an ESL (English as a Secondary Language) country. Most of our subjects in school are taught in English, with one of our major subjects across all educational levels is English. Almost everything written that is public...road signs, menus, establishment information/instructions...mostly or primarily English. Even contracts and national broadsheets are written in English. And someone also pointed out that our constitution is written in English. That's what and how English is to us.

For most of the new artists that I mentioned, their idol is Regine Velasquez. Without Regine, there won't be any inspiration for Mori, Katrina and Gigi. Yes, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, etc. are some of their idols, but there won't be anyone in the Philippines that they can emulate without the one and only Regine Velasquez. 😁

As a Filipino-American who grew up in the Philippines, I can attest that English is legitimately the second language. I’d wager 60% of the population are extremely fluent. 90% can definitely speak enough english to get by. Regine Velasquez was also encouraged to mingle with the upper crust of Manila society to improve her social graces and communication skills. Her original manager wanted to package her as a sophisticated diva early on. In fact, she was criticized at some point for trying too hard to speak with a Beverly Hills twang. All this contributed to her having an international career in the Asian continent releasing 4-6 albums outside the Philippines
