Who am I?
Expert singing teacher, specialising in teaching children and young adults in singing and musical theatre. She has worked with the likes of The Saturdays for MTV, on shows such as Just the Two of Us for the BBC and many more. Throughout her years of teaching she has judged in many competitions, judging Lucy Spraggan, George Samson, amongst others who have gone onto succeed in the business.
I am the founder of Vocaltutor, (founded 2003) the UK’s largest vocal and singing tuition network and now The New Foundry Studios which opened in 2013.
I have worked with BBCTV on Just the Two of Us, with many celebrities including Natasha Hamilton of Atomic Kitten, plus has worked for ITV on many children’s TV programmes including The Worst Witch, as their vocal coach.

Taylor's voice is soft because the character in the situation has already accepted the breakup ,whereas Justin is using power because his character is still fighting for something that is already gone. At least that's how I view it.

Hes outsinging cause it's an argument in that part of song. An argument in which both of them are speaking but neither is ready to listen what the other one is speaking. And in this process Taylor's character is calm and this is not trying to over power. Whereas Justin's character is trying to over power.

remember, early taylor songs were she is the one screaming,being overdramatic while her partner was the calm one. this song shows contrast especially how taylor portrays a woman who can be calm amidst an argument

I agree. This proves singing isn't all about hitting high notes to be a good singer. You can still have a soothing tone to your voice like Taylor has.

I see this as them talking and being at different points in the break up. Taylor's character is already resigned, she accepted their relationship is over and she left. He was just left by her without expecting it and is upset. So he will be more emotional and she is just responding to him.

same thoughts, the reason why the Justin needs to overpower Taylor is how the song potrays, it's almost like how your dad overpowers your mom when they fight haha I mean it's always been that kind anyway a man always overpowers a woman when they fight so I think that's how exile works lol

Justin Vernon's vocal range is just incredible. One of the best really. Taylor has always had such a pretty tone and as a fan I can tell how she's worked on her vocal over the years. She doesn't have the strongest voice (idk what the technical terms are) but feels she knows how to play to her strengths

She just not only left him but immediately replaced him and left him facing his replacement. She didn't just give up, she discarded him like he was nothing. He didn't just realize, he knew.

@@stevenverner6546 he didnt see the signs that the relationship wasnt working, she think she left enough hints and left finally, only for him to to almost lash out when the confrontation happens. she's calmer because she chose to end it and has had more time to process it and isnt fighting for it.

Is it me or exile is way too underrated? It's a masterpiece when you look at the lyrics and how its executed. The 2 speak their feelings without understanding each other at the same time.

exile is the 2nd most streamed song on the album (only after cardigan), it was a fan favourite since its release, was featured on 2 tv shows and got a grammy nomination. plus the catchphrase "I think I've seen this film before" has become popular on tiktok in the last 20 months. I feel like everyone loves it, so we cannot argue with those who don't because there is no one to argue with about it.

I really like what you said about this song feeling like a conversation. That's how I feel listening to the whole album. It's almost as if Taylor is sitting down telling you all these stories and you can't help but sit back, enjoy and just get lost in her poetic storytelling. Great video as always Georgina!

Recommend some more songs with him similar to this - all the Bon Iver I’ve heard so far I’ve felt lacking - wrong songs maybe :/ I didn’t realise he did Rosalyn but even there his voice is so different.

I have listened to this song 30 40 50 times in a row everyday. I'm so mesmerized by the depth of their voices. Especially when they are talking to each other. You didn't give Me A sign. I gave so many signs

I don't understand why so many people seem to dislike this song by saying that their voices don't match. It reminds me of "The Last Time" that Taylor sang with "Gary Lightbody back in the "Red" era days, which happens to be one of my favorite songs of hers :) "Exile" is my favorite track from "Folklore" as well .)

i love this collab, i can easily tell the melody and songwriting is all Taylor but she made sound like a Bon Iver song and that gives much of the spotlight to Justin's voice. An amazing duet.

i think they're singing it in slightly different ways because they were recorded separately. I'm guessing Bon did his part after Taylor. If they were together in the same room, they likely would have played off each other and brought their level of intensity more in line with each other. Just my opinion.

Was never a big Taylor fan but this year I listened to folklore and then her older stuff and she is actually very good, she has a new fan. Prefer her to lady gaga & other female artists. each to their own, preference of taste. Love this song.

I agree bon iver's voice is beautiful jaw dropping. I love a deep singing voice with range. My only compliment is he miss is queue on "So step right out" it was a little awkward there because he had to rush it to catch back up. But this is one of my favorite songs on the album.
