Woodkid is amazing indeed. As a video director, he started his career as an assistant to Sofia Copolla and directed some scenes of Marie Antoinette movie. Then he delivered music videos for the greatests: Lana Del Rey (several), Katy Perry, Harry Styles, Drake, Rihanna, … He also created some visual masterpieces for his own songs (check the video of his hit Iron) As a music and artistic director, he collaborated with John Legend, with Lorde, with Pharell Williams (on his megahit Happy), and more recently for the new album of the french superstar Mylene Farmer. His songs are a recurrent in Video Games soundtracks (Assassin’s Creed, Dying Light, Granturismo, …) or movies soundtracks (Divergent series, Hunger Games series, umbrella academy, Ellis, …) He has performed also very beautiful duets with Lana Del Rey, Elle Fanning, Lykke Li, Son Lux, …

Props to songwriter Alex “Mako” Seaver for this incredible piece of music as well the entire Arcane soundtrack.

woodkid was being given a different song to work on, but he heard this one by happenstance and asked to do it instead. the producers weren't sure what they were going to get, but woodkid is so good at what he does that they used almost exactly what he created in the show with very little change to the final production.

Beth, you won me over. I was a Woodkid fan for such a long time now, and the way you described his voice while discovering it yourself ....I had to subscribe. You gave me no choice and thank you for that.

Thanks for your reaction! Those chromatic notes really give it an eery feeling, but if you go for it with a mindset 'I know contemporary music, I will just find the right note on the fly', you can easily stumble on them ^^; You are right, the show Arcane is about two sisters experiencing their lives in a dystopian steampunk/magical world. The soundtrack is specifically made for the show and adds so much to the emotional setting of tone. Still suggest to watch it, it is only 9 episodes for now :)

If you love mixing contemporary sounds with classical music, I imagine Woodkid's whole discography is kinda tailor made for you. I absolutely love all the varied instrumentation in his songs. They all have a heavy use of classical instrumentation and composition, but he leans harder into contemporary instrumentation for some songs. Goliath in particular has some incredibly unique percussion, with almost completely contemporary instrumentation and structure, but still using classical string arrangements and piano as key elements. God, the percussion in Goliath makes me so happy.

Do you know of any other musicians who scratch that particular itch? Spotify only recommends a crude approximation of Woodkid's style; although I can't blame it, since his unique voice contributes a lot to his music.
