OG VIDEO; • Tori Amos Caught a Lit...
ABOUT…
I am Rebecca and I am one heck of a passionate vocal coach/singer/songwriter/impressionist/health/fitness/self- improvement/anything that makes me smile!! I love anything vocal/singing related and geek out on it every day. I want to motivate and inspire others to follow their dreams…corny? Well maybe but it’s true. So what’s motivating me?? I had a huge tumour removed summer 2017 and my ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tumour was the size of a 20 week baby!! However, despite not being able to walk for a couple of weeks, and feeling generally awful…. It has made me create and do what I love! It wasn’t an easy time but I won’t let fear dictate my life. I didn’t think ‘why me’, there are plenty of horrific issues people have to deal with…it’s not always smooth sailing. It’s true when you hear, ‘Life is short’, the crazy thing is, I am glad it happened…I appreciate life even more and practice gratitude everyday…It’s so easy to get caught up with the little things…and I do sometimes, but look at the bigger picture, will it matter in a year or two…?
Also thank you for all your support. It means a lot.
Subscribe to Rebecca Vocal Athlete to get inspired by new videos weekly!!
Have a great day!!
Rebecca

No, I'm actually not!!!! Sorry if my comment was a bit misleading: my "thank you for the shoutout" was meant as a "thank you for all this precious recognition given to Tori considering how underrated she is"!!!! So all my gratitude to Amber as well for making such a beloved request ❤️ And of course to fantastic Rebecca, I love how you got lost through her vocal flows at the beginning :')

I think what your referring to is a musical term I just discovered called Rubato. I listened to her do this since I discovered her in the 90's, It's what caught my ear's attention back then, I played bass then and music was supposed to be perfect, tight, timed, theory, yada yada, She teased the boundaries and honestly 30 years later she is probably the most talented musician of this time.

I *ADORE* this anomaly of an artist and a woman. Inimitable. You can literally *feel* how her distinctive vocals and lyrics are just *propelled* from this unreachable place for most, a place that seems to belie even her own physicalities at times... It's almost as if she's in a trance-like state, like this glorious shamen serving as conduit between alternate realities. I know I sound nuts, but it always seems, to me, as if she's honestly channeling her fascinatingly distinctive sound from some far off realm....one not visible to us "mere mortals". Heh, I wish I lived there... Her energy is so loveable and endearing, too. She seems genuinely humble, lovely, yet forever loyal to her own specific truths. She's up there with Bjork and Kate Bush for unadulterated, unapologetically unique works of indefinable music. Personally, she's my all time fave... She just speaks to me, that's the best way I can explain it. She's otherworldly, yet so much more than the confines carried by any inadequate label, descriptive, or definition could ever touch. P.S. Your impressions of her are pretty awesome! You obviously have a hell of an ear.

Only person in the thread that had any idea what this was about... Tori telling the world Trent was weak, had a small unit and was bad in bed. (And I love NIN, but trent got owned here) even the line "right on time... you get CLOSER, and CLOSER". Basically saying your sex drive is under my control. Straight FU to trent. And yes, "past the mission" took on a new dimension afterwards.... as if it needed to be more chilling.,

She breathes music and lives for it and it really saved her once after she was raped. "me and a gun" is the saddest song ever. Thanks for your reaction, hope you will do more because not enough young people know her and it's a shame. "precious things" Glastonbury 💖 but so many songs are amazing... You don't only form sound and sing from your larynx alone. You sing, form sound, and shape the quality of oscillation, through your nose and down through your skull bone as well. The skull provides the acoustics of sound hence your demonstration of the word "Closer". Her nose is as important as her throat because she does it correct and beautifully.

Tori always gets called a knockoff Kate Bush but I really think her music is way more similar to 90s Sarah McLachlan. If you look at Sarah's first three or four albums, the style is shockingly similar to Tori's music. Ice from Sarah McLachlan's 3rd album (not Ice Cream but Ice) sounds like it could be a Tori song. I believe they both came into popularity right around the same time in the early 90s too. Both are definitely Kate Bush influenced for sure but I think those two are more similar to each other than either are to Kate.

I wept through most of this video. I've never seen this particular live piece by Tori, but I have seen others...what I didn't remember about her performance technique is how she contorts herself as she plays and sings, as though she's *not* the one in control of the music, but rather she's been possessed by it, that the music is using *her* as its instrument. I'm reminded, for a geeky reference, of Shmendrick the Magician of "The Last Unicorn"; it's as though Tori says "MUSIC, DO AS YOU WILL" and then has to live with the results. Her performances give the impression of a form of ecstatic torture and I have trouble imagining anyone not being moved by it.

You may be interested in this old live video of Happy Rhodes who is a woman with a wide range. Not "famous" as such but quite influenced by Kate Bush and currently singing for The Security Project which performs Peter Gabriel songs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6vdlICjm6x1oLs

It took me a couple of minutes in the song to realize there was no music playing lol. Then of course started the piano. God I love her. I don't know how/why, but I completely forgot about her. Last time I heard anything from her was probably way over a decade ago.

I met Tori at a radio contest thing in the 90's. I love her voice and that piano, she asked me if I would like her to play a specific song.....I just blurted out, I don't care what you sing, I'll love it no matter what. She played famous blue raincoat........it was and still is my fav song from her...next to have a merry little christmas.

She's a Baltimore girl like myself. Winning a full scholarship to The Johns Hopkins Peabody Music Institute, at 5. But was kicked out at 11 because of liking Rock & Roll. She has such an incredible vocal. Very expressive, operatic...

Tremendous analyse abilities around voices but also music dear Rebecca. I love your approach, with open heart and true deep feelings, in hearing emotions through singers' voice, breath, and also music. Thanks a lot for your tribute for this artistic sphere et keep managing such singing analysis like this. I know you already listened to the amazing voice of Miles Kennedy, please listen to his performance with Slash on "Beggars and Hangers On" at Guitar Center Sessions. one of your French follower :)
