IMHO it’s the last 4 minutes of her performance that ruined her chances. I feel she wasn’t convincing enough as being De aster and definitely underperformed compared to Natalie Wood in the 1961 version. Her heartbreaking left me emotionally cold. Other than that she was absolutely marvellous and IMHO a much better Maria overall.
@gambledw2 жыл бұрын
@@gpapa31 I love both the '21 and the '61 versions and for me Zegler's Maria is captivating. For the last scene in WSS in general, I think it could be written differently. To many words, talking about how many bullets, killing, possible suicide, and hate. Gets in the way of showing it, emoting I think.

@@gambledw you’re probably right. To be honest with you I didn’t cry jn the 1961 version when I first saw it as a kid back in the 90s back I did feel Natalie Woods devastation, it was quite there in your face. I don’t know Rachel didn’t deliver that here and the scene felt kind of rushed to me. Overall I loved the new version and IMHO is right up there with the 1961 by Robert Wise. It’s really really ashamed that it was overlooked this year bombed at the Box office and snubbed by the award committees.
@hierophantpurple51632 жыл бұрын
@@gpapa31 I think maybe another factor is that the part of Maria may not have enough range that the Academy would want to nominate someone in that role for Best Actress? Iirc Natalie Wood didn't get a nomination for Best Actress either. WSS 1961's acting nods were in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories. Plus with her being a newcomer to acting on screen/the way Maria is written it's possible Rachel didn't give as good a performance as the others nominated in Best Actress this year. I have yet to see the films the Best Actress nominees are from yet so I can't speak my opinion on those nominations.

Some fun facts: Rachel Zegler auditioned on the first day of auditions and set the bar so high with Steven Spielberg, he couldn’t find anyone else that matched her performance. There’s a wonderful story of how Ariana Debose (Anita) turned down a request from Steven Spielberg to read at her first audition because she didn’t feel confident that she was going to give her best and asked for another day to read (she was only supposed to sing that day anyway). David Alvarez (Bernardo) won a Tony Award at I think age 10 alongside Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish for their joint portrayals of Billy Elliott on Broadway.

"I'm being really picky cuz she's really good." And that to me is the Death Blow for Ansel in this movie. He's not bad per se, But when you put him up against Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, Mike Faist, David Alvarez, Rita Moreno: He's out acted out danced out sung by everyone. Everyone else is greater then excellent and that's why he nearly sunk this movie for me even though I love the movie and it's still one of my 10 Best of 2021, Everyone/Everything else is just that great.

I really feel like you’re undermining how much he put his all into his performance. @Charles's Movie Channel That's an interesting perspective; I think I liked his performance for the same reasons you disliked it. His singing, while beautiful, is stylistically different and lacks the power of the rest of the cast, and his acting is significantly more subdued and laidback compared to the more fiery performances. For me, this set him apart from the other characters, showing how isolated and different Tony is from the rest of the Jets, and it brought a very unique charm to the character. That said, I definitely understand how someone could find his understated performance subpar compared to the other actors
@yobculture2 жыл бұрын
I’m just now hearing that people have a problem with his performance and singing. Pretty stunning, because I thought he was fantastic and had a beautiful voice. I thought both he and Rachel Zegler had better voices than the voice doubles from the original film. I much prefer Elgort’s style of singing to Jimmy Bryant’s style. (Bryant was Tony’s singing voice in the original.) Their performance of “One Hand, One Heart” is literally one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard in my life. Their voices were beautiful together. And their chemistry was great, too. I truly believed they were in love, unlike the original film. Zegler/Elgort had a natural, more realistic chemistry that didn’t seem like over-the-top acting. It makes me wonder if any of the critics here have ever been in love.

Steven Spielberg did an amazing job on this movie and deserves a lot of attention. If anyone was going to do a remake of a famous musical it would be Spielberg definitely. The "Tonight," balcony scene is my favorite scene of the whole movie and when I think of WSS its the first scene that comes to mind. This Tony was more aggressive than Richard Beymer's Tony and Rachel's portrayal of Maria was much more vocal and liberating than Natalie Wood's Maria. 1961 was a different era for women back then. 2021 is more female empowerment than it was back in the late 50s early 60's. Well, I guess I'm a defender of Elgort's performance in this film, because to me, outside of a couple of moments where he's outperformed by someone else, there's other moments where another performer doesn't give a performance sent by God. One moment like that to me is Riff's little "explosive anger" dance spasm that felt *very* random at the end of his verse in "Cool." Again, not saying Mike Faist didn't give the performance of a lifetime, but everyone has a few cracks here or there. Though I do find it funny how I found Elgort's singing to be the stand-out portion of the film that really impressed me out of nowhere and stuck with me (not saying the other performers weren't absolutely fan-friggin-tastic mind you).
@NicholasTylerBrown2 жыл бұрын
@Shardae 100%. I think it might have been because I didn't know many of Tony's songs from the musical in general, because I was really only shown "America" or "Cool" before from the original. It might have played into how impressed I was by Elgort's performance, but overall I also just remembered his performance the most because I wasn't expecting that amazing talent from him.

TOTALLY agree!! Ansel's Performance as Tony, is PHENOMENAL in this new 2021 Movie in my humble opinion! I actually thought he WAS one of the strongest Singers, if NOT the Strongest Singer in it! He's just got a different kind of Voice, (in the best possible way)!; from the others in the Cast! Low, Deep, Sexy, Sensual, INCREDIBLE lilt and Vibratto, more "jazzy" and throwback, which I personally LOVE!! He doesn't have to be an absolute powerhouse, although he definitely DOES have a very strong voice when it is necessary for the song! On the other hand though, he emotes SO much feeling and emotion into every song and you "feel" every word he's trying to convey! His pitch and Timbre is also STELLAR!
@bgdancer100 Жыл бұрын
A thing to keep in mind about Elgort's portrayal of Tony is that this is a Tony that almost killed a kid in a gang fight and did a year in prison for it. As a result, as he says to Riff earlier in the movie, "I'm scared of myself . . ." Ever since he got out of prison, he's been bottling up his emotions, and it's only after he meets Maria that he lets himself exercise those emotional muscles. I might be reading too much into it, but at least there's an in-universe explanation for why Tony's singing isn't as bold/emotionally charged as Maria's.

I think that Rachel Zegler could teach the vocal coach a few things about musical expression. I also think that Ansel's more subtle approach perfectly matches the persona of his character. He was recently released from prison, is trying to forge a new life, and has learned that "coming on strong and aggressive" didn't work for him. Also, as in ballet, his primary job was to make sure that his partner shined through... and he did that admirably. His performance was not subpar.

Maybe this will teach you not to judge someone at the beginning of the video with her voice. Rachel is always great.

This performance is superb but the official Puerto Rican version of this is sung on the internet by Spanish Meistersinger Placido Domingo and Puerto Rican operatic soprano Ana Maria Martinez. It is interesting how Martinez takes the solo after the words "shooting sparks into space" and catapults this song into another dimension of beauty.

Tony has a really strong accent, I think that’s why he couldn’t really make it bolder cause he is trying to be consistent with his voice

She was great... everyone was great... except (hate to say it) Ansel as Tony. He played it too safe and withheld and his vocals were good but, in the same vain as Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast, they were overshadowed by the amazing vocal talents of the surrounding cast. He is a talented vocalist and actor but just seemed too vanilla in a cast full of flavor and spice and it seemed like it was a choice sometimes because there were times he pulled up and it worked, like the bit at the end there and after THAT scene later in the climax.

Honestly agree with everything you said about Rachel, she couldn’t have done it better in my opinion. You said Tony’s tongue was getting in the way but I actually found his vowel placements too lazy and low and could have done with more lifting which I think in turn would have added clarity and energy to his voice. It may have helped his slight pharyngeal constriction too. He had the range and the thyroid tilt on the top notes but really needed a little more chest resonance.

Sorry folks, but I have to disagree with many of the commentators here. A big fan of the 1961 version and while yes Rachel Zegler did sing lovely, Ansel Elgort did not take a back seat to her. He was equally as effective and many as I were impressed that he could sing that well. In fact as I've told many it is for these two one should see W.S.S. Elgort and Zegler embody "Tony and Maria" beautifully. As a matter of fact Elgort's rendition of Tony is superior to Beymer's of the original 1961 version. Zegler is an absolute delight as Mara but personally Natalie Wood still holds the candle on that role.

Completely agree, Rachael's voice is beautiful but his portrayal of Tony was spot on in every aspect. I thought his vocals were fantastic. Maria was my favorite scene in the film. It just boomed in the theater and gave me chills when I first saw it
