I know! I was thinking about this too. The merge of celebrity culture with social media is so intertwined now and so publically open, you get access to people's art so much more readily than years before. I remember youtube before all this and some people may look down upon social media but I find it so exciting the possibilities that are opening up for musicians looking for exposure and ways to improve their craft.
@LuMartinelli3 жыл бұрын
@@kickinitwithjess i consider it the bright side of social media. While there is much to critizice it for, these kind of things represent gigantic steps forward on a discipline. Imagine Phil Spector opening up some Beatles sessions, and that information being inmediately available for kids worldwide months after the release of Let It Be. This is unheard of until the present and (Hopefully) it could represent a massive amount of quality music in upcoming years. All is not lost in today's world!

In the Audio industry Pro-Tools is the most complex and main standard but Logic holds its own with what it has and can do. Obiviously many other programs out there with different preferences for everyone like rap, trap or hip hop on FL Studio, EDM on Ableton, Cubase, Presonus Studio One slowly getting popular. Finneas has inspired so many of us producers, and sort of printed a statement in our heads that you can make great songs from your bedroom. That's a thought inducing thought.

This is very helpful for getting better at track production and editing, especially with respct to vocals and layering harmonies. I also like how he goes into the creative thought process rather than pure technical aspects and shows how he blends the two in real-time as he's thinking and their recording. Definitely helped me get better, thanks Finneas!

Looking at how other people name their tracks can be really interesting "crappy tom" really make me laugh
@PathPMusic3 жыл бұрын
lmao I was thinking about that too, but I missed "crappy tom" I'll have to look back at the video again LOL!!! What I particularly noticed about this was "instr8 and things like that and i was like "oh ok, so it's not always about being so perfect in the naming of the regions" lol. But of course it depends on the person.

First: I'm a fan of their work, not because I "listen" to it for fun, but because I appreciate the production value. Not even a fan of the genre, per se. I've spent much more time studying Finneas' work, then listening to any of their albums or singles. Second: If you think there's not a lot of editing on her vocal tracks, you're nuts. They're doing 100 takes (maybe more in some cases) for 20 seconds of vocals. The performances are spliced together from those multiple takes to create a performance that never existed. A performance that is the MOST on pitch, and the MOST in time that has that "something." I'm sure they'll accidentally stumble onto stuff all the time, and chase it. Some transient, a laugh, etc, etc. That's a LOT of editing, tracking, trial and error, etc. This avoids autotune and makes for a more natural performance, but is INSANELY time consuming. Given the sparsity of the instrumentals, and frequently solo'd vocals... that's kind of required of the style, since you'd hear autotune in the conditions (at least a trained ear would). So please, stop saying her vocals are not edited. You devalue Finneas in saying so. Additionally, Google Little Alter Boy. That's a staple for this team. ALL THAT SAID: She IS talented, that's not up for debate. But you need to recognize part of that talent is having the patience to sit there and do 100 takes for 20 seconds followed by revisiting all those takes. Nuts! Trust me when I say, it would be a nightmare to do that with anyone who couldn't lay down good tracks, on average (which she obviously does). Evidence that she's legit can be seen in any live performance. But there is a world a difference between "live" and "radio ready" material. If their albums sound like their live work, you would have never heard them. There would be no albums, and singles. They'd be a good soundcloud act, at best. Getting radio ready material requires immense amount of detail work, editing, etc. Billie makes Finneas' job EASIER, by being talented but let's not pretend like the guy isn't doing anything. And let's not pretend she's Whitney, or Mariah circa 1994: one-take monsters that leave the mic smoldering when they step away from it. Neither does she impart soulful qualities (in a single take) like Nina Simone, X-tina, Beth Gibbons etc. You might feel like she does, live, but that's only because that groundwork from the album cuts are there like a map for your brain. Objectively, her live performances, while above average, are not anything that'd break her away from the pack. The album cuts are low-impact vocals tracked in close mic situations with high gain, high compression, and with multiple, M-U-L-T-I-P-L-E takes. Definitely much more akin to Lorde, etc. Lorde paved the way for this style, doing something very similar to their work flow, but her instruments/composition sound amateur in comparison, and that's after being reproduced. Finneas' VST-i choices, and composition are far superior, creating an awesome sonic palate, with special emphasis on the low-end and rhythm with sparse mids/highs. This means no frequencies are competing with the vocal performance(s), allowing chordal harmonization on the vocal tracks that would otherwise be muddy. Total cheat code to seat the vocals, but the time people typically spend getting mids/highs done? Finneas spends that fixating on the textures of the low-end, and it shows. Almost ethereal at times, not an adjective typically associated with low frequencies. Billie has a great voice for her style, but be real. Bottom line? Billie Eilish's voice is hella edited, and Billie Eilish is very talented. You don't need autotune when you're not paying for studio time. When YOU are the studio, you can just do 200 takes, take your time, and take snippets from all the takes to make a killer performance (that never existed). I bet there are 50 versions of that laugh he speaks about in this video. 20 years ago, her albums would not have existed. It'd take some real money to obsessively record the same 5 seconds of vocals 100 times. Counting the editing, that can be like... IDK.. 3 days of work? No label would have EVER paid for that. And as good as Finneas is, he would be nowhere absent low-latency home-based DAW recording. And I say that not to sound offensive. It is AWESOME that we have this technology now, so they can make these albums. Interesting times! Hahah. I'm sure they go nuts listening to all the vocals and have to take frequent breaks to just keep their ears from getting fatigued and losing objectivity. Awesome in their own right, and seemingly rebellious to the "traditional" album work flow. Good stuff. So, back to my first point - Not a fan of the music, but I love the production value, and the fact they'll spend days chasing sonic qualities for 30 seconds of audio. And that's all I'm ever going to say on Billie Eilish. Nothing else to say, and I'm no fanboy. So there you have it.

Spot on. I love the absence of autotune. It will be like what the DX7 was in the 80's I hope. Scorned and looked down upon. Next, we need to get rid of the 808 kick, snare and hat that's also running rampant. FFS, this is ART - try something new! Thanks!
