That's marvelous. It's a pity here in Italy most singing teachers, especially Opera teachers, are always strongly convinced "passaggio is the F# and it's a thing only tenors must do on F#" and it's completely impossible to try and reason with most of them...

This is so interesting and SO helpful! I'll need to watch through this whole series again a few times to get my head around the technicalities but can't wait for the next video. I am thrashing out a couple of new songs, composed for me, but in a very tricky register - right over the passaggio - so all these insights are really valuable to me right now. Thank you so much for your clarity and spot on teaching!!

Really cool video. You do a great job of explaining the motivations behind why we'd want to incorporate vowel modification into our technique. Excited for the next video!

Thanks so much for these videos! Very useful for me. I have been intrigued by formants, and while you discuss them, you've really presented so many ideas and insight. I am looking forward to your next installment. :D

Hi, comments are turned off in your last video where you asked for video topic suggestion? I'm assuming this is a mistake. Anyway, my suggestion would be to make videos analyzing great singers and sort of reverse engineer their skills maybe? Also, vocal resonance is very interesting so make more of those maybe. thanks.

Hello Karyn and thanks a lot for your videos! I find them to be very unique on KZbin and very helpful. Are you going to to the rest of the videos you talked about? I definitely feel that they could be very helpful to me, especially if you give examples of how you should tune your vowels on different pitches. For example, as a male tenor/high barytone, I struggle to find a good resonance on my F4, without making it too belty or yelly. On the other hand, I found that tuning my vowels to an "ø" or a somewhat closed "o" helped my resonance toward the G4-Bb4 notes in my chest dominant mix. So my question is: How should I tune my vowels for the different picth to get the maximum ease and resonance everywhere?

These are great videos and a lovely intro to Vocal Acoustics. Did you continue the series? As a side note, anyone wishing to delve deeper should be reading Ken Bozeman and investigating Ian Howell's work on this subject.

Hello, your channel has been super helpful because you talk about why things happen and it helps me understand how things work. I started studying music about 4 years ago and when I started I couldn't even match a pitch. Now I can and my ear has gotten a lot better. About a year ago I started singing from scratch and I've gotten a lot better but one thing that really annoys me is that I have to be so ultra focused to sing all the correct pitches and even then most of the time I don't exactly hit the pitches. I have a good teacher but I feel like you know a lot more than him and so that's why I want to ask you: What can I do to be more accurate? I can tell when I'm off or if I'm a little sharp or flat but just knowing it isn't enough for it to come out in tune. Also, I joined your 7-day challenge on facebook. I really need to talk to someone that can explain to me why things happen and how to fix my problems. I don't want to leave my teacher but I also want to learn more about singing and I don't think he has the sufficient knowledge to really go in depth with his explanations. Sorry for the essay, and thanks for the videos. :)

I never enjoyed the term vowel modification. I instead think of space and vowel as two separate things. The vowel is the seed of the phonation, and the space around the throat, below it (in the chest), and above it (pharynx, nasopharynx, orthophayrnx) can change, but I don’t call the space the vowel. The space can be nice and contained and hollow but the vowel could be muddy... and vise versa. Maybe I’m misunderstanding though. Also, some methods work well for others, but I always just pronounced brightly in the dark spaces (resonance chambers) within the column.

I use different terms when describing the adjustments that we make to our resonance (resulting from adjustments to our vocal tracts). And as I'll keep emphasizing in the upcoming videos, there are many different approaches to the passaggio. They're not necessarily right or wrong; just different. They serve our different technical needs and artistic goals. Depending on the style or the song, I'll approach my scale differently. Sometimes the vowel is more speech-like and bright. Sometimes it's more 'tall and rounded' and warmer in timbre. The important thing is that we know that we have choices and can execute those choices for artistic purposes.
