The best advice I've ever received from a vocal instructor, "Let your voice warm up, don't make it warm up." No one has ever suggested that to me before. My voice is crap in the morning and I used to do all kinds of weird things to get it going. This has saved it from wear and tear.

thank you Brett! and the whole of the team as well! my range has gone insanely high over this past few months. one and a half year to be exact. I could barely hit the highest of baritone but now im a high tenor! could scream all i want like adam lambert! and again i wanna thank you at the bottom of my heart :)

So true, Brett. The hum is one of my favourite exercises to wearm up with. I sometimes go from that to Italian vowels: [i], [e], [a], [o], [u]. Really gets the voice focused and resonant :)

I love when people bypass the information in the video and it's value to comment on the way they are dressed - which has NOTHING to do with the point of the video or lesson AT ALL. Thank you for your pearls of ignorance. That said, I have the Singing Success and Mastering Mix Program. I'm still working on SS but I already hear and feel a difference. The lessons are great and if you can't afford them you can always go to their .tv site and watch the other lessons they have.

My musical director, at my school, is having tryouts this upcoming week for our schools show choir.. Its for high school and I'm trying out for my freshman year but I feel like I'm going to be terrible around all the upperclassmen that have experience so I checked these videos out. You helped so much and I can now reach higher notes without losing breath or straining my voice! Thanks a lot! (:

Breathing exercises are a very important tool in working on tone and breath support issues, but it does very little if anything at all in loosening the vocal cords. Even though parts of your comments were fairly snarky, I am glad to have heard what you had to say. For once again I will say that I agree with your point of pursuing vocal excellence involves the whole body and not just his vocal cords. With that being said, I wish you the best in whatever you do.

it's involuntary sometimes (when breathing) and voluntary other times (singing) it is of great use to learn to control the diafragm, as it gives a lot of power into singing, but you are right about it not being useful to warm up the vocal chords.

Try their singingsuccess.tv site. They have a few free videos and for $35/month you can download full length lessons. Try taking smaller, quick breaths, like you're saying "by the way" too much holding back creates resistance on your chords and loss of control - like a balloon you let go of. Melissa Cross is another good coach to look into. Her first CD ZoS covers breathing and proper vocal foundation, etc. The 2nd CD gets into the screaming. First one is VERY valuable with info and only $20

@MrPsycoticgamingHD yup i was 14 when i first started,so deep i cant even keep up with any song's notes. i kept practicing,every single morning id do vocal warmups. I can now talk in a deep or high voice anytime i want to. THeres a unique voice register called "mix voice" , basically u start off with a really weak (whisper like) mix voice or you cant find it at all,it requires time for mix voice to be discovered and put in your actual vocal register though. anything else we chat via inbox!

Not at all, try doing a vocal fry as soon as you wake up, some people lose the ability to do it as the day goes on because their chords thin out as the speak and so on. If I've been singing a lot in a day, especially high, my chords are zipped up that I can't really get that bare vocal chord vibration. It's not a bad sign. You probably just have thinner chords than myself or brett. Anyway, try it first thing in the morning, chances are you'll get it working.

I agree that you want to consider the whole body in pursuit of vocal training. Tension in the body, often times leads to tension in the voice. However, pedagogically speaking, to imply that you can control your diaphragm is incorrect. You can control the duration of the breath, and how long you retain it and breathing exercises help with that, but you can't consciously manipulate or isolate your diaphragm. Besides, it isn't the only muscle utilized in breathing.

what if your throat feels scarred?Peviously, the upper part of my throats been swollen, it was hard to talk a bit. One day I was singing, and it felt as if I pulled something, then I felt scar , or hurt on the right side of my throat. Now Im putting my on a break. Should I worry?
@protruckguy11 жыл бұрын
At what point were any of us trying to accomplish that feat? To flex your diaphragm is to breathe. Breathing/ diaphragm exercises also help to "loosen" the voice along with anything else being warmed up as this is a whole-body endeavor. I hope Jonel considers the whole body in the path to "the voice" and you have a great day full of open mindedness.

I really need to know exercises to remove air and to close my vocal cords tighter... I want my voice more edgy (less aired) but when i try to put less air my vocal cords (that before were in my control ) now that I sing with less air (I think) they move on their own and Im unable to control them .. Is there any especific part of your cds that I could buy that talks about that? thanks

@PredatoriaMoon13 жыл бұрын
@MrPsycoticgamingHD dude this may sound a bit drastic but i bet its true. It is medically proven that if you have a more chubby neck ( being fatter/rounder in size) your vocal chords hangs loose and makes easier for a higher vocal range. i ate a lot since then,gotten fatter,could scream again,before i was like screeching nail. (its up to you if u wanna eat more) practice everyday,range will come eventually and unknowingly.
