As someone who does voice-over for videos, I realised that my voice, the way I hear it, • is different the way other hears me, • is different when I record it, • is different when I use different headphones to record it, • is different when I speak in a different language (I speak in English in my videos which is not my native language, and voice tone and speaking manner is different from when I speak in Bengali, my mother tongue).

Fact: Audio recordings isn't what your voice sounds like to others. You can test this by playing a piano key in real life, then recording it. The recorded key will sound different than in real life. The reason why your voice sounds bad in recordings is because the speakers are bad. This is why are there people who spend a lot of money on a good sounding system

When I heard my recorded voice, I was also shocked. But then I started listening to other people's recorded voices and I realized that they don't sound like that. If you really pay attention, you realize that the recorded voice is not the same as the real one, but it seems so because the mind immediately associates the person with the voice. One way to verify it is when you are not expecting a call from someone you haven't spoken to in a while and when you answer it you don't recognize it at first and say: "ah, hello, I didn't recognize you" and you are surprised when the person says who is it. At that moment, the mind instantly synchronizes the person with the voice and the voice appears to change to how one remembers it. In fact, our voices sound almost the same as we hear them when we speak and not how we hear them recorded. One way to verify this is by talking in a cave and listening to the echo. The voice there is the same as how we hear ourselves and not our recorded voice.

@Zeta Reticuli before smartphones people were using small digital cameras like the Sony cybershot, and before that they were more commonly using handheld digital camcorders, they all produced good sound considering it wasn't that long ago. I don't think you can actually get a good idea of house you sound by doing this experiment if still the vibrations from within you affect what you interpret.
@ZetaReticuli_
@ZetaReticuli_ Жыл бұрын
@@benbrown9053 I remember the Sony Cybershot. I use to have one before it got stolen. It was actually a fairly nice little digital camera. A better way, I found than the experiment in this video is to actually put your hands behind your ears, cup your hands around your ears, and push them forward. You get far less of the internal vibration, capture far more of the sound of your voice in the air.

Good question, and here’s the answer: Once a singer or voice actor has spend time learning how the voice “feels” when it’s producing a certain “sound” they can reproduce the sound by reproducing the physical sensations. It’s called sound-and-muscle memory. With today’s smart phones it is possible to record a good likeness of what your voice really sounds like to others. Doing the exercise on the video (or on our Vocal Coach CD’s/downloads) with the folders, while recording the voice, trains you how it physically feels when producing a certain sound. When doing a character voice, or a cover song you can get the sound you want then memorize how it physically feels. That’s important when singing in different spaces which give you radically different feedback, even with monitors. Hope this helps.

Wierdly enough I think my voice is great when I hear myself singing in real-time, but when I hear my voice recorded, unlike most people who's voices sound higher pitched, my voice sounds deeper but in an akward way and I despise it. Me hearing myself I sound like some of my favorite singers (I swear I can sing a really tough song like "Heroes" and I feel satisfied hearing what I sang), but when I recorded myself I sounded like a broken Tuba and I am so irritated. I tried the exercise with voice vibration blocking with folders and I sounded relatively the same to what I hear myself singing, so I don't know the situation I'm in when I hear such a terrible voice when recorded (I use Samsung Galaxy S7 to record myself).

yeah - as a college teacher, I used a video camera in my class sometimes as an aid for preparation for public speaking. Showing it to the students, they would invariably be 'OMG do I really look/sound like that !?!?!?' Point being that our bone/skull resonance makes our voice sound quite different to us than it does to others. The other big result was beginning public speakers typically started saying "UM...AH...UM" quite loud, and then mumbled the key words of their speech. Seeing that themselves changed that real quick.
