Thankyou Marnell! I'm actually a teacher myself and I've been really trying to find the most effective way of describing the singing sensation and I think I've finally just found it! In my own vocal journey I had a lot of trouble with understanding the support mechanisms and wish I'd come across this earlier, would have saved me years of unhealthy tension and vocal fatique problems. Thanks again!

This is so awesomely wonderful thank you so much, I am attempting to make a joyful noise to my LORD and Savior Jesus Christ as part of the choir at my church and I have heard people say "you have to breath deeply", but that did not help me at all because as you so beautifully demonstrated it is so much more to singing than just breathing deeply. Honestly, it's hard to say, because there are so many wrong ways to do an exercise, many more than I can count. And sometimes, you will do something that's only specific to you and no one else since all of our bodies are a bit different. So it's really hard to say. All I can say is if it's causing you tension for now, abandon the exercise until you can afford a lesson and get proper real time feedback on YOUR particular issues.

This is interesting - I started practicing this exercise, did the posterior pelvic tilt variation like you show, close my mouth and try to blow air to puff the cheeks, felt the back working exactly how you described.. and then I corrected the posture and focusedon replicating the same sensation. I did this several times without making any voice.. and then when I suddenly went to make a voice, it got stronger, fuller, and infact easier to produce.. it works almost like magic, how come?

This is awesome! you explained it so clearly and the practical examples you provided indeed work! question, is this a strenghtening exercise for support? because i already have good support, but ive never seen anyone explain it this way, and the result is that my support suddenly engaged much more! as well as i feel like i can gradually control it more which makes a ton of difference! just curious if its an actual exercise or just a kind of a lesson to "steer" us in the right direction? because it seems like a great exercise! to both awaken support and strenghthen!

I'm wondering how this advice relates to classical technique as laid out by Richard Miller. He seems quite opposed to any kind of pushing in the breathing mechanism, instead only ever prescribing that we should feel a slight activation of the muscles, and then retain the inspiratory position as long as comfortably possible. How would you negotiate your explanation with Miller's?
@VocalLiberation9 жыл бұрын
Primož Vidovič Well, believe it or not, I actually learned this from opera singers -- opera singers with very strong, dramatic voices. This is what they did to add that extra thrust and OOMPH behind the sound. I'm familiar with Richard Miller, as I've read several of his works, but it's been some years, so forgive if I'm slightly off in my interpretation. What I will say is that there is a right way and a wrong way to "push". If what you're doing causes your throat to become rigid and tight, then you're doing it wrong and probably going into the scenario that Richard Miller describes for pushing. If you do it right, the throat remains very loose and free, and you just end up with extra strength behind the sound, but you feel much more engagement around your core area. The other thing you must keep in mind regarding Miller's explanations are the INTENTION behind the sound -- meaning, what kind of sound you're trying to make. If you're mostly just singing lightly (meaning not a lot of air pressure), you can mostly rely on the elastic recoil as he mentions. In that manner, you don't feel the muscles of the torso working as much. You will experience more of that slight, subtle activation. However, if you need to sing much more strongly/dramatically, that elastic recoil won't cut it. You have to learn to use your ENTIRE BODY to hold back and resist the air pressure. If you don't, then you will feel everything in your throat. I don't know if he was teaching singers how to sing this intensely, but when you start to explore this, you realize that singing is a FULL BODY act, especially on the back side of your body. But it must be done in a coordinated fashion, once again emphasizing that the throat must remain free. It's not just randomly pushing anything and everything. There is another factor which comes into this and that's the individual habits of the singer. Everyone holds tensions in their body differently. Some people naturally hold more tension in their chest, some in their abs, some in their rib muscles, some in their neck, jaw, etc. As a consequence, when someone gets their voice into balance, they may report drastically different sensations. One person may say, "Oh, I had to relax my abs, and then everything was fine," while the next person might say, "Oh, I had to think of TENSING my abs more." Different routes to get to the same place. It all depends on the person, and this is why it's important to have a teacher to show you what your tensions are and how it might feel for YOU as you're coming into balance. A book, no matter how well intentioned, cannot describe all of these possible scenarios. Also, as a side note, if I remember correctly, in "The Structure of Singing", he wrote about one of the German techniques of breathing that involved a lot of pushing. Although it wasn't specified in his book, I think when some singers attempt these types of things, they end up trying to recreate the "pregnant" look and then pushing based on that. When you produce the "pregnant" look, it actually causes the lower abdomen and pelvic floor muscles to relax, and thus it provides no "floor" for your core muscles to resist again. Thus, you end up pushing the wrong way. David Jones had some good information about the right way to "push" on his web site. He refers to it as the "grunt" or "cough" reflex. A very strong activation of the lumbar and oblique region. These muscles are VERY important for singing strongly. They are key for utilizing the whole body underneath the sound instead of singing from the throat up. Read here the section on support: voiceteacher.com/support.html Here in the last paragraph: voiceteacher.com/sing_dramatically.html And here, the 4th paragraph: voiceteacher.com/management.html I don't know what your technical level is, and it's very possible that I have overwhelmed you with too much information. If I did, let me know.
@privid9 жыл бұрын
Marnell Sample No, it's fine, thank you. This has been one of the most confusing parts of singing for me what with all the different information available, and yet it's the fundamental without which you can't reliably build anything else.
@VocalLiberation9 жыл бұрын
Primož Vidovič Well, if the exercises are designed the right way, many of these principles will begin to kick in on their own! That's the beauty of it. Because you can only make the right sound if the coordination is right. Some people, however, do need a little additional explanation in terms of what's actually occurring, and that's what these videos are for. I sent you a private message.

These are expiratory muscles being contracted, correct? So the intraabdominal and potentially the pulmonary and subglottic pressures will rise? This would explain why I start getting red in the face if I do it for twenty seconds and do it very intensely. I suppose higher open quotient singing will require less pressure?

diggs If this is your first time using these muscles, yes, they can get a bit sore. When I first practiced some of these breathing exercises, the area near my lowest ribs would get SO tired and fatigued! But as you get more accustomed to it and more aware of the subtle nuances that make it more efficient, you won't experience that anymore.

Yeah, I took a few voice classes at the 2 year college, (I could never afford private lessons and sure can not afford them now) So, there was probably a lot they left out... so how does one actually do this correctly and what about appoggio breathing? What is it, is it absolutely necessary and if so, how is appoggio breathing done?
@VocalLiberation7 жыл бұрын
How does one do this correctly? There are a lot of breathing videos on this channel. There is a whole playlist on here devoted to them. That said, it's something that's hard to develop on your own because it's not JUST breathing. It's one component of it. What's most important is how the muscles of your trunk (and abdominal cavity) are coordinating with your vocal cords as they are making sound. That's what appoggio is ultimately getting at. If whatever breathing method you're looking at is not showing you how to coordinate what you're doing with SOUND, then it's missing half of the picture. The best way to learn all of this is to take one-on-one lessons, even if it's just only one lesson. That way, you have someone pointing out what YOUR particular habits are and what's important for YOU to focus on and what you can ignore.

Very good technique many singers will no doubt benefit from this method. You have explained it very well. You have used the term “Push Down and Out” , can you pls clarify by pushing Out do you mean push out 360 deg or push out stomach only. Many thanks

Good question. The outwards feeling is indeed one that is felt all the way around 360º, but it can be felt more readily in the sides for a lot of singers.

I really enjoyed your video. I've read about and watched many breathing techniques but none of them helped me understand how to do it. Your video helped me understand how to breathe from the diaphragm and how to know if I'm doing it right. I really would love to learn how to be a singer that actually sounds good. Only experience I have is singing at home. Do you provide singing lessons for beginners.

Hi Marnell. When should I push down and out? Is it on every word or note, or just on the high notes. For instance if im singing Beyoncé Listen, do I push on "Listen, push again to, like on each word. That's the only thing im getting confused about. This video has been very helpful to me and I love how you teach, its very direct.

Stephanie Davis The down and out sensation is something that you will constantly feel throughout every phrase you sing. It's like one continuous, flexible push. As a general rule, when you are lower in your range, you will feel it less; when you're higher, you feel it more; when you're louder, you will also feel it more. You don't want to push so much that you don't have enough steam left to finish out the phrase, though. For a song like "Listen", you would push very minimally for the beginning phrases. Then for "Oh, the time has come...", you would start to push a little more strongly. If you were to say that line very slowly (like talking in slow motion), but just SPEAKING it, not singing it, it would feel like you are saying one long drawn out word. That's how you know you are maintaining a constant push and not suddenly letting go. I know this can be a little tough to get across in writing, so let me know if this made sense.
