"You breathe in too much air." I cannot agree more! We often make that mistake when we do bigger songs, thinking that 'breathing more' will 'give more resonance' when in reality it tightens up the sound a literal lot.

Fruit, i strongly recommend you find some extra money because basically you can't really learn to sing well from videos on you tube but i would say this - Marnells videos are very good. I say this, from experience. I was learning to sing from what i thought was an excellent vocal course of audio recordings. The explanations were excellent. But, i ended up with an injury adn now that i've found a decent teacher, i've realised that I was missing a whole lot - misunderstanding a whole lot - on those lessons. You really do need a teacher standing right in front of you in real time to correct your mistakes and your understanding. Get an extra job so that you can afford singing lessons with a well trained professional teacher.

This is by far THE BEST vocal tutorial on the internet! The depth you go into is Brilliant! I have developed a voice disorder Spasmodic Dystonia. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would have a voice problem. Your voice effects everything you do in life. I am thinking if I learn about how the voice works and learn how to use my voice (again or in a different way) I might be able to lessen the effects of this disorder. Thank you for taking the time to teach this. I never knew there was so much to learn about using your voice. Absolutely outstanding instruction and knowledge!

Thanx for making it clear that it's something you have to practice to get right, but most importantly, that the larynx will go up and down slightly with pitch, as nature dictates. This is because I've heard other coaches claim u have 2 keep the larynx down ALL THE TIME, and I was confused how ANYONE can achieve this. Thanx again for the clarity, Bro.

what you said about breathing in too much air is the most important thing. We definitely all make that mistake. When you expand your ribs and stomach, you're taking in most of the air you need just by that act, you don't have to "over inhale". That's what I realized over a year ago.
@VocalLiberation9 жыл бұрын
***** Well, with this, you don't even have to consciously think of expanding your ribs. If you have ever tried blowing out all of your air and then holding the air out of you until you feel a strong urge to breathe, all you have to do is let go of the abs and the air comes rushing into you! The ribs and stomach expand on their own without you having to give it too much attention. We just learn to use a more subtle form of that for singing. :)

The larynx has been the bane of my existence (that and not knowing how to tell what vocal type I am) but the biggest issue I had was thinking "No matter what I do, the larynx won't stay still. It always moves." I felt so relieved and happy to know that it was normal for it to move in a minimal, relaxed way when singing, which is what I experience for the most part. I was creating tension by trying to keep it from moving! I have a long way to go, but this was amazing and a huge step! Thank you!

@VocalLiberation9 жыл бұрын
Primož Vidovič Thanks! And I guess I should have explained this in the video, haha. I had chosen to do the runs there to demonstrate that the voice is free from tension. If I tried to do the same thing in either one of those incorrect positions, I would not have been able to do any runs -- the voice would have been too rigid! In a certain sense, you can say runs are a form of an agility/flexibility exercise to make sure the voice is remaining supple, as are exercises involving dynamics. Thanks again for watching!
@Rosannasfriend9 жыл бұрын
Marnell Sample if that's the case, it would have been better if you had sung straight with a neutral larynx first, then show a second neutral larynx demo with all the (hopefully better executed) runs. what about when you sing up to like A4 to C5 range. Can you really still move your larynx side to side when hitting notes that high?
@VocalLiberation7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for such a great question! When in the extremes of your range, different things happen. On the extreme high end, the muscles that stabilize the larynx engage a bit more, especially when singing loudly. So you may not be able to move the larynx from side to side. What's important to take away from this video is how the throat, jaw, and area under the chin feel free when moving the larynx in your spoken range. Then you're just looking for that same sensation when you're higher up.

Should you feel any movement in the laryngeal space when doing soft OR vigorous breathing exercises, such as hisses? Would the slight elevation of the larynx indicate holding back breath with your throat as opposed to the abdominal muscles?
@VocalLiberation8 жыл бұрын
+Primož Vidovič During breathing exercises? Depends what kind. During soft, low intensity breathing exercises, you shouldn't feel much in the larynx. During vigorous breathing exercises, the larynx will move a bit more, as it's tied in with respiration as well as neck/head movements. The larynx does move up a bit during hissing exercises. That's normal. Remember the larynx works together WITH the abs!
@privid8 жыл бұрын
+Marnell Sample Do you have any idea why this would be, though? Why should the larynx cooperate with breathing exercises? Or rather, how do you differentiate this natural movement from unwanted neck, holding back breath with the throat etc., which tends to activate neck muscles too?
@VocalLiberation8 жыл бұрын
It's the anatomy of the larynx. It's directly involved with breathing just simply from your vocal cords. They have to open to let air in to your lungs. Then you have the muscles like the sternothyroid and sternohyoid, which both attach into your rib cage. They activate more strongly during rigorous breathing and also when singing more intensely. At least when it comes to singing, the larynx MUST coordinate with what's happening in your breathing. Breath support will not occur correctly without this coordination in the larynx. The two go together. The closing of the cords facilitates proper breath support. As the cords close more strongly (correctly), the larynx tends to anchor itself downwards more. This is why doing isolated breathing exercises is only of limited benefit for singing. It does NOT show you how to coordinate your breathing with the SOUND. Only a small amount of time should be spent on isolated breathing exercises.

Thank you for posting this video. This is a very important topic for studying singing. However, when you are comparing the different ways of singing, I suggest you sing in the exact melody with the 3 larynx positions. So it is easy for people to compare an apple with another apple. If you change the melody in one of the mode, it is hard to judge the effects. Are they different because you were singing in different styles or in different larynx positions.
@VocalLiberation3 ай бұрын
Hi. I understand your point. I guess I should have clarified it in the video more. When the larynx is not in a neutral position, it becomes more rigid and inflexible -- that is, it gets locked into place and prevents you from having dynamics and agility. The larynx can get locked into both a high AND a low position. The 2nd example was to demonstrate that the voice was able to move (that is, not locked).

Marnell, can you please do a video on increasing power when you sing?
@VocalLiberation9 жыл бұрын
***** I think you might have already seen them, but my videos on taking the chest voice higher and also the one on singing more clearly cover a lot of aspects of how to increase power. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYWnpZyXi8p4gLs kzbin.info/www/bejne/imqcqZqBbbKjjq8 Without sufficient chest voice activity, you will not have much power. Without proper vowel clarity, your potential power will be muffled. There is a little more that I'm going to add to it in a video I'm working on now for resonance, though, because that lets you fine tune things to get even more power out of your voice. Stay tuned for that one!

Fantastic and clear video, Marnell. What happens when your native language is Spanish? I have been told to put on a British accent when I sing...will that help?
@VocalLiberation9 жыл бұрын
Paola M Same rules apply even for Spanish, although I do generally notice that for those whose mother tongue is Spanish, the larynx tends to want to be on the high side and there is also a tendency towards singing nasal. You don't necessarily have to put on a British accent, although even for Americans, that sometimes helps, but mainly with certain words -- you know, words that end in R like "lover". Thinking more like a British accent for words like that helps to keep the tongue and throat more free on the R. But in Spanish, most of your syllables end in vowels, so you're lucky. Here I sang a little bit of "Contigo en la distancia", so you can see how the neutral larynx applies to Spanish. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nl6YcmBmmJd3n68m42s

How do we combine your tips on the neutral larynx with your tips on the squeezed vocal cords?
@VocalLiberation2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. The simple explanation is isolating the feeling of the vocal cords squeezing so that you don't have extraneous muscles kicking in while activating the squeeze. Depending on how your voice is, you may have to approach this different. Some people have to think of making a really deep, dopey UH or OO and then trying to squeeze from that position. Others think of just going for a less intense squeeze. If your voice is really breathy and weak, you just need to go for the squeeze and allow some extraneous musculature to kick in as you are building basic strength, and then revisit the ideas on a neutral larynx.

Should it also stay relaxed when saying ay vowels like singing "dayy"? For me those muscles activate to raise my tongue to create the ay vowel, and i also realised i use those muscles alot, to get a more forward sound. Now i can sing on pitch, but i do not have great tone, so i am not lead singer material just yet, but that is what i am working towards. So i am curious, should the muscles under the jaw always stay relaxed?🤔 i mean i can sing with a really low larynx and still use those muscles to shape sounds. Maybe this is why my tone isnt that good haha
@VocalLiberation3 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. For an AY vowel like in "day", yes, the tongue can still stay relaxed even though it sits higher in the mouth! Tensing more of the muscles around the larynx IS a way a lot of people commonly get a more forward sound, but it isn't the only way to get a more forward sound. You don't need to sing with a "really low larynx" -- meaning, it shouldn't be rigidly held down. (Sometimes, you may have to do this as a temporary process to get from point A to point B, but it should only be a temporary thing.) There might be a little activity underneath the jaw, as the tongue does move around in the mouth when you sing; but it shouldn't be rigid and rock hard. If you open your mouth like you forgot your though, and then breathe in THROUGH THE NOSE while still keeping your mouth open, it will cause your tongue to elevate somewhat towards the upper molars, similar to the AY position. However, it occurs without much muscular tension. After you take in a breath like that, THEN say AY without trying to move things too much, and you should find there is less tension under the jaw and in your throat in general. You don't have to breathe in through your nose like this all the time when singing, but it is simply to demonstrate that there IS a way of having the tongue sitting high in the mouth without necessarily tensing to do that. The larynx will sit relaxed -- neither forced low nor squeezed up high. If you're used to trying to sing very forward, then the voice might sound slightly deeper than what you are used to when you do this, however, it will be a deeper quality while all the tissues around the hyoid bone are still loose and flexible.

This is one thing that I struggle with a lot, but not because I find it hard to sing with a neautral larynx. Instead, because I listen to many artists that often don't sing with their larynx neutral. Take "Teen Angel" by Mark Dinning for example. He sings with a higher larynx. I see this a lot in 50s and 60s music! Elvis Presley often sang with a lower larynx to get a deeper sound. I think the larynx can be used stylistically, rather than always having to be neutral.

Of course the larynx can be used stylistically. Many things with the voice can be done stylistically. But you must also realize that every sound has a "cost". There are some sounds that come with a low cost, and some that come with a higher cost. As long as you are aware of this as you are singing and making conscious, intelligent choices, then all is well. The point of this channel is to help you find a "middle ground" for YOUR vocal capabilities. That is, the place where everything functions correctly from high to low, loud to soft without unnecessary strain or restriction getting in the way. Once you can do that, then it's up to you to decide how much you will deviate from there.

eventually we will be doing this excercise in scales?
@VocalLiberation7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can apply this concept to scales and songs.

IS this a good warmup exercise, or should someone do some warmups first? I am one of these struggling musicians that can not afford private lessons or any of that stuff..this is all I got!
@VocalLiberation8 жыл бұрын
No, this isn't a warm up. It's a principle you can apply to a warm up you're already doing, as well as to songs. A warm up really needs to be individualized, as it is based on your current level of development as well as your current habits. The best I would say is to sing simple scales for now in your comfortable range on the vowels AH, EH, EE, OH, and OO. That said, I understand the struggling musician thing. I've been there before. But if you can save up and even do a lesson once a month or once whenever you can, that would be better than shooting in the dark, which is what you are essentially doing now. Getting real time feedback from someone who can point out your personal habits is invaluable. Record the lesson and listen to it a thousand times over until you have money for the next one.

Question: do you breathe through the nose or mouth when singing?
@VocalLiberation7 жыл бұрын
Mostly through the mouth, but sometimes through the nose a little too. You might want to check out this video, the way I show how to breathe there. It explains how all of that applies in actual songs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXLOpWermbeimaM

Hello. Thank you for this very information video! I started my singing journey Fall 2017 and have been taught by several different instructors. 😩. Thank goodness, I finally found an effective-technical vocal instructor, 🌟 Sometimes, I feel like I am inhaling too much air. How does one know the correct amount of air to take in prior to singing and speaking? Thank you and have a wonderful day! R~ ☮️&❤️- ♑️

Hey! please answer to this question please... By the video you mean to say that we have to keep the muscles below the chin relaxed, the larynx will automatically come in a resting position?

one of the hardest songs to sing pitch perfect in key... were we neutralized dancing around it? or can we not sing the song neutralized

I can keep the larynx neutral while breathing, but it starts moving the moment i try to make a sound
