While this isn't a voice comment, I'll say this: I've suffered depression at different times in my life, and this song makes me always believe life is worth living. And the truth is, just like the pendulum swings, that things always change, and that there is always a clearing of the storm. There is always a safe harbor one can seek, if one knows where to look for it. By the way, read The Pit and the Pendulum by Poe. Tuomas, the keyboardist, compared his depression to that of Poe's, when Poe lost his mother, sister, and wife all to tuberculosis.
@domfol55154 жыл бұрын
Isaiah Welch I was or still am on that boat of depression, but nighwish and particularly Floor Jansens voice just relaxes things. She is just so amazing, they are amazing. I heard Tomaus wrote that about tarja leaving the band ! I could never understand that, nonsense ! What you mentioned sounds more like the truth. I don’t want to bother anyone here , by the way !
@Esmeagolly4 жыл бұрын
dominic foley its inspired by the poem the pit and the pendulum but the song is in fact written about his feelings and depression after the Firing of Tarja. Tuomas got allot of flack from the fans, and sunk deep in a depression. And it basicly came down to him committing suicide in this song to save him from himself, the section of mother and father is based on a conversation he had with his parents.

This song was originally sung by their second singer Anette. It was written after the dismissal of Tarja and the ensuing backlash that Tuomas recieved because of the way it happened an open letter after the last concert she performed with them. What many don't catch is when floor does change a word in the original lyrics, she does it to make the song sing properly. If you have any songwriter friends, you will probably find that they massage and change the words of the poem multiple times to find a phrase that suits their particular vocal style. Tuomas seemed to not let Tarja do that to his lyrics, making Tarja's singing seem harsh or clumsy sometimes.

The one the writes all the music Thomas makes the songs for the singer. There are a few songs that were written for another singer that Floor is not the best for.... not saying she can't sing it but its just the way the song was written. But the back ground of the song is what helped Thomas get out his inner strife with the release of Tarja. When writing it he was able to get through it. Now initially it was written during the later end of Tarja (he knew she was going to be released from the band) and that is when Annette came in and did the song. Annette is a different type singer than Tarja and Floor (Tarja and Floor kinda are in the same style of singing) So some of the songs later in the albums creation were tailored to Annette style and those songs are the exception.

Not Floor at the start. It's actually a choir boy. You are right about there being a backstory to this song. The song is about the final break-up with their first vocalist (Tarja Turunen). A childhood friend of Tuomas. The problems started when she started dating her now husband. He convinced her that she should get more money and recognition as the rest of the band because she was the star of the show. She then also started to refuse to perform in venues below a certain crowd size. They even had to cancel a whole US tour because of that. As you can imagine this caused a lot of tension in the band. It was then decided that she would record 1 more album and then leave the band. But the situation got so bad that the band decided to fire her at the end of the running tour. Litterly at the last concert (recorded as the "end of an era" live dvd) they fired her after their last song. They did that by giving her a letter with and explanation for the clean break. As an explanation to the fans they also published the letter on the internet (not the best way to handle this). It was intended to be as transparent as possible but it backfired catastrophically. The public backlash of the press and fans was mostly directed against Tuomas. Who was thrown in to deep depression because of this. He saw everything he worked for so hard for fall apart in front of him and also could no longer see a future for the band. Because he knew that a real suicide would hurt his close family and friends he decided to commit suicide artistically. The closing section of the song is a thank you to his parents that took him in again when he was at his worst. They were responsible for putting hem back again. There are two more songs that i think that are interesting for you to take look at concerning Floor and her vocal techniques that you have not seen yet. 1 Floor singing a aria from Puccini called "O Mio Babbino Caro" for a dutch tv program there is small interview with English subtitels at the start. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZXCopaYrJiZa7M 2 Floor growling. It is an acquired taste but it is another facet of her versatility. The song is called "Disdain" when she was still in the band called "Revamp". kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnrUq4OOr814q9k

@@VocalSplendorStudios Well, they use a lot of pre-recorded backong tracks. They have to. They can't go on tour with the London symphony orchestra that you can hear on thei songs. And leaving those out would make it something else than a symphonic metal 😉. But it really is understandable to make ghat mistake, as, like you heard later, Floor CAN do it. But if you listen that first part closely (preferably with earphones) you can hear that it's a "traditional" choirboy even in pronounciation wise (wovel modification I suppose).

Is there actually a second choirboy on this live version? I know it's on their album version (I don't think Anette even had that in her "toolbox"), but here Floor does that second part.

@@Garbox80 I think it was only on the album version

Thanks for the great reaction. This is piece is as self portrait of Tuomas feelings, lead song writer and composer, when they dismissed Tarja. I think you are ready for the Greatest Show on Earth in Tampere. Although if you want to see the rough in her voice you should react to Romanticide, Wacken.

I have a question: When you sing , when you express your emotions in your lyrics, when you feel the song, how you to to not fall in tears or have a knot in your throat?

You really need to react to Devin Townsend - Kingdom Live for EMGtv and Deadhead live at King Albert Hall!!! Every vocal teacher who reacts to Jinjer and Nightwish also find it extremely worthwhile to react to him!

I know. This has been on my list for a while. I need to move it up!

Nightwish - Your's is an empty hope (Wembley) if you want to hear little more "growls" ;)

Greatest Show On Earth is THE must to react of course. Everyone should hear and see it. But I think you haven't done Yours Is An Empty Hope yet either. There you can hear Floor's growling like a beast in the chorus while Marco sings "normal notes". Here's a live video from the Baltic Princess cruise ship 2015 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqW7ooiEd52tqLc

The backstory of this song is important to understanding the meaning.

Great reaction and explanations! I think you'd appreciate Nightwish - Sleeping Sun (Live In Tampere, Finland) 2015 It's amazing! Floor's voice is angelic!

I like a lot of music but nightwish with all the layers ,transitions, emotions and tightness in the band is plain beautyfull. The storytelling and how it is composed , for me its the level of old masters mozart,bach,beethhoven. Tuomas is one hell of a writer.

What about Marco (bassist) singing? Listen song Islander and tell us what do you think about him.
