Human beings are sensitive instruments, esoterisism goes far back than christianity or any documented organized religion for that matter. Sound however is universal. Vibrations through air and into us move our emotions and endorphins faster than any preacher or psalm ever could. That's why you enjoy this without prior religious attatchment. It is true that some say God is in art but that is only because the word we have to describe something so immeasurably vast and beautiful than we could ever understand, is summed up into one measly three letter word.

Thanks for your comment! I'm the guy on the far right in this video, but I sing Tenor 1, as well as my colleague on the far left. Next to us are the second Tenors, followed by the Baritones and the Basses in the center. This church in Vienna sounds amazing (as well as our bass, that's true) and helps a lot for this kind of music.

Kolbeinn should be identified as "poet". Did he die in 1207? I read that the poem was written in 1208. Perhaps it circulated widely in public shortly after his death... Icelanders are usually pretty precise about dates. Anyway, pretty close. Very old poem, gorgeous 20th c musical setting, perfect feeling of antiquity in the notes.

This hymn allows one to believe in Thor/Odin, as well as the Christian God, just perfect for a time and place that Christianity had become thoroughly entrenched, but most would have had older relatives or ancestors who would have handed down other stories, other beliefs.

Was this hymn composed for the reason of begging for forgiveness? Giving up the old Norse Pagan ways in order to accept Christianity? Religion is a strange and beautiful thing. All of them are. It conjured our morals and values, it conjured art and beautiful music.

This ancient hymn goes a long way back around the 12th century. It is said to be written by Kolbeinn Tumason, a chieftain, on his deathbed, while Iceland went through a period of internal strife and struggles within clans. In fact, Christianity arrived in Iceland around the 10th century and around 1000 Iceland voted in favor of it but were still allowed to worship the Pagan religion :)

Kolbeinn was the last Goði in Iceland. He was a pagan writing to the christian god, pleading the christian god to take care of him after his passing. He wrote this hymn at his home waiting for the executioners sent by the christian bishop to come and kill him. He was the last "public figure" who hadn't rejected paganism in iceland. The bishop killed him because christianity doesn't fundamentally accept the practice of other religions alongside it, like paganism does.

Following up what Búi Hrafn writes below, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolbeinn_Tumason Although it is odd that Kolbeinn is said to have written the hymn "on his deathbed" if he died in battle from head wounds (though there's a bit more info here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_V%C3%AD%C3%B0ines). Wikipedia is not always 100% complete or accurate. But Kolbeinn clearly wrote the poem, was clearly in conflict with the bishop, and Icelandic history does record that the Battle of Vi∂ines did take place near Hólar in 1208.

Why does everyone have to state "I'm not a believer, but...."?? Does it really matter? God knows who is and isn't a believer...and that's between God and you. (He exists whether you believe in him or not.) Just be quiet and listen to the beauty of this. If it wasn't for Christianity, your ears wouldn't have the pleasure of being graced by this to begin with. So just quit talking and enjoy it.
