Since you enjoyed Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto, I cannot urge you strongly enough to listen (whether you react or not) to the original orchestral version of Sibelius' tone-poem "Finlandia". It is one of the most moving, exciting and stirring pieces of music I know. Everytime I hear it, it makes me want to go fight for Finnish independence - until I remember that I live in Canada, and that the Finns achieved their independence a little over a century ago.

At the beginning, the arranger. That's "Captain America." His name is Blake Morgan, he's the arranger and his crunchy chords that are getting you going at the end.

Another recommendation for a video by Voces 8. A new video, filmed in the Grand Tetons park. VOCES8: The Saddest Noise from 'The Lost Birds' by Christopher Tin. A beautiful sound, with a full orchestra backing. It is a very different setting for Voces 8, but I think you will truly like it.

Enjoy seeing your reactions! Voces 8is a phenomenal group. They have been around over 20 years. the Finlandia song is from 2019, I think. Blake Morgan is the lead tenor and is still with Voces 8. He is from the USA, from Michigan. The blond soprano has moved on and and her replacement is a super singer named Molly. The tall lady has been with the group at least 10 years. Her name is Andrea. the second alto is the director,, a contra tenor, Barnaby Smith. he and his brother started the group. This link is to London By Night. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn7WY36modGMjZo. The arrangement is by Gene Sperling who was the driving force behind The Singers Unlimited. I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Finlandia, Op. 26 is a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The first version was written in 1899, and it was revised in 1900. The piece was composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire, as the last of seven pieces, each performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history. The premiere was on 2 July 1900 in Helsinki with the Helsinki Philharmonic Society conducted by Robert Kajanus. A typical performance takes anywhere from 7½ to 9 minutes. A recurrent joke within Finland at this time was the renaming of Finlandia at various musical concerts so as to avoid Russian censorship. Titles under which the piece masqueraded were numerous, a famously flippant example being Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring. Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people. But towards the end, a calm comes over the orchestra, and the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn is heard. Often incorrectly cited as a traditional folk melody, the Hymn section is of Sibelius's own creation. Although initially composed for orchestra, in 1900 Sibelius arranged the entire work for solo piano. Sibelius later reworked the Finlandia Hymn into a stand-alone piece. This hymn, with words written in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, is one of the most important national songs of Finland (though Maamme is the national anthem). With different words, it is also sung as a Christian hymn (Be Still, My Soul), and was the national anthem of the short-lived African state of Biafra (Land of the Rising Sun).

I think you enjoyed that one. 😉 I'm so pleased - it's one I love, and hoped you would like. If you're looking for more, they do quite a lot of actual church choral music, but also modern songs. I think my other favourite would be May It Be from the Lord of the Rings films or their version of Vincent. I believe Sibelius wrote an orchestral piece called Finlandia, and this section he called the Finlandia Hymn - there were soon Finnish words written for it, but there are also quite a few different hymns and songs in English using the tune. It's a beautiful piece of music, whatever the words, but I do love these in particular.

I may have missed it, but I don't think there was a key-change where you mentioned one. There was just a newly-added level of harmonic complexity. I love the way the arrangement starts so simply - very similar to the version I've sung, but becomes progressively more complex, finally culminating in loads of juicy 7th, 9th and 13th chords.

Only the tune is Sibelius's. But a great tune nonetheless. The more original word arrangement is in Finnish and the message, unlike here, is purely nationalistic re: Finland

Ngl every single version of the hymn is shit compared to the original finnish lyrics. That's because of both cultural importance and emotions of the original composition and the lyrics written around 40 years after the first composition. The whole composition was about the struggle of finns under the russian rule with a hopeful end of independent and thriving Finland. The lyrics were written right after the winter war. The lyrics are also about the struggle under russian rule and the war against soviets with again the hopeful ending of a thriving Finland. Though my opinion is only mine as a finn.

I love this hymn. I am sad that you didn't determine how to pronounce Jean Sibelius correctly. I see this a lot with reaction videos like this. No one seems to be able to pronounce Luciano Pavarotti either. You need to do more homework.
