VOCES8

Күн бұрын

VOCES8 collaborates with Nick Deutsch (Oboe) and Alexander Hamilton (Organ) to record from 'Jesus bleibet meine Freude' from the cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147'. The recording was made at St John the Evangelist Church in Islington, London and features on VOCES8's 15th Anniversary album, 'After Silence' (www.voces8.com/aftersilence).
Text:
Words: Martin Jahn (c.1620-82)
Jesus bleibet meine Freude,
Meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
Jesus wehret allem Leide,
Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
Darum laß ich Jesum nicht
Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht.
Translation:
Jesus remains my joy,
My heart’s comfort and sap.
Jesus obviates all misfortune,
He is my life’s strength,
My eye’s delight and sun,
My soul’s treasure and bliss;
Therefore I will not let Jesus go
From my heart and sight.

Was für ungeheuer reine, volle, reiche Musik…

Wer Oboe spielt muss Zirkulationsatmung beherrschen. Während des Spiels wird im Mundraum der Druck gehalten und gleichzeitig durch die Nase eingeatmet. Das geht nur bei Blasinstrumenten welche hohen Druck aber wenig Luftvolumen benötigen.

I totale agree with you John. I guess, Bach would appreciate this incredible performance. Philip, I see your Point, but don‘t forget that music is for everyone, not only for the priviledged. I wondered about that. (Whether he was using circular breathing or not.) As a trombone player, I use circular breathing mostly to extend a phrase or a long note. I've heard jazz reed players use the technique, but not classical. Very musically effective in this piece. I find it impossible to use circular breathing on a moving line, with a good result, so I found this performance to be particularly impressive.

Why these singers perform this piece so incredibly well... is literally written on their faces... love and modesty. Probably THE essence that made it possible for Bach to write such divine music. As many others already commented here... their German pronunciation is not only perfectly German - even for a German native speaker it is a truly beautiful pronunciation almost no German is able to speak. Really asking myself where they have learnt it! :) That the British have extremely talented musicians is a well known phenomenon. Goosebumps, a bit wet eyes, smiles and the hair on my head stands upright. :)))))) Edit: after hearing it for the fourth time, I can confirm that they speak a more beautiful German than any native speaker.

Mais que c’est merveilleusement bien fait. J’en suis très touché. Quelle symbiose, délicatesse et puis l’artiste à l’hautbois est un chanteur à la classe ultra supérieure! Délicieux !!!

I know Voces8 have perfect control and legato, but the oboist left me breathless. Did he ever breathe? Wonderful! The most beautiful prayer, Jesus, meine freude, thank you.

Yes, in through the nose and out through the mouth. It's called circular breathing. It is standard practice in advanced levels on the oboe.

Just to be certain, I have listened to this tremendous, perfect performance at least 100 times now. Each and every time, a few tears are shed. I remain firmly convinced that this is the most perfect version I have ever enjoyed of what is, in my opinion, the best of Bach, which of course lies beside so much genius.

It is a beautiful performance as is that of the father of modern oboe playing, Leon Goosens. His tempo is slightly faster: Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147: No. 10, Choral. "Jesus bleibet meine Freude" kzbin.info/www/bejne/rX-3e6SlppdjjdE

Transcendent. Beauty of such depth, it makes my heart tremble. One if the very best I have ever heard, by one of the very best vocal ensembles in the world. When we have performances coming up, I always look to you to see how it should be done! Thank you!

After just enjoying this recording for about 150th time, I had a stunning revelation. In my mind, in addition to the stunning choral voices, the terrific oboe and organ, there must have been an orchestra in behind them. No, it seems not, the two instruments and the glorious voices provided such a full experience, it seemed like there was so much more. I truly wish I could 'like' this 1000 times.
