In terms of harmony, pitch in the range of the major key generally evokes a happy feeling, Bach takes this to the extreme with attention to detail. The result is as an extremely joyful hymn that just makes you want to dance. The second section bounces to the other side of the colour spectrum, evoking a really serious emotion instead, making one lament various things. Each musical technique Bach deploys is carried out to perfection.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a prolific German composer who in many ways is the father of Western classical music. He was a genius at counterpoint, which means lines of melodies that wind together, creating melody and harmony at the same time. He wrote 7 sonatas for flute and harpsichord. The harpsichord was a precursor to the piano-but instead of hitting the strings with a hammer, they are plucked. A “sonata” simply means a solo instrument with some kind of accompaniment, and they are one of the most common types of chamber music. 18:55 [Astraios Chamber Music]

I'm not a religious person. But I love that religion spurs artists to create such incredibly complex marvels of beauty. Bach of course is the master of the ear. But I just came from India and I saw the architectural version of what Bach did with music in Humayun's Tomb, an Islamic monument built in the late 1500s. It was conceivably the most well-structured building I have ever beheld. Every single angle was just a wonderful play of light and shadow, all in expertly-carved red sandstone and marble. The marble interior was just as mathematically precise as the exterior, and from every angle in every entrance you took, which was 12. I cried tears of joy when I had been there 4 hours and I saw the sun set, the muezzin call reverberating over the base of this tomb, which was a subtle interpretation of infinity as you went around and around in a circle. No building before or since has made me cry. Bach and the Muslim architect of Humayun's Tomb--true geniuses that married math and beauty together in one resplendent union, all for the glory of God.

This cantata is like a wonderful, complex mosaic with an overwhelming effect on the listener through its many astonishing, celestial colors. God had a great idea to give us Bach.

Jesus remains my joy. There is a world of difference between 'Jesus, joy of man's desiring,' and 'Jesus remains my joy.' Another problem with the former translation is that it does not line up with the sentiment of the former movement, 'Wohl mich, dass ich Jesum habe.' Even without the wrong translation issue, it is difficult enough for common listeners like myself to figure out who wrote what and in which context. But certainly, it is important to retain the original beautiful words of the original author. And thirdly, it is not true that Jesus is the joy of man's desiring, because many people do not believe in Jesus; some even hate Him. Should a text be changed so much that it completely loses its core meaning in order to translate it? It all depends on the text, I guess, but in this case, I think it is a grave mistake.

Much better translation is "Jesus will always be my joy"
