For those unaware, the Magnificat was the prayer offered by the Blessed Virgin Mary upon her arrival at the home of her cousin Elizabeth, who had just proclaimed that the babe in her womb (St. John the Baptist) leapt for joy at the sound of Mary's greeting. It is the culminating moment reflected on in the Second Joyful Mystery of the Holy Rosary. 😊

Thank you for sharing this! It makes the amazingly beautiful voices of Voces8 that much richer and inspiring!

Correct! The reason as to why it is entitled, "Magnificat" is that it is derived from the Latin phrase, which is the first phrase of the Canticle of Mary in the Gospel of St Luke, albeit translated in Latin from the Vulgate, and hereby used as part of the prayers honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary from then onwards. The first stanza of the Canticle goes, "Magnificat anima mea, Dominum, et spiritus meum exsultavit Salutaris meam!" (My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in my Savior!"

All the voices are relaxed; nothing is forced. No belting or rivalry. Everyone supporting the part that shines in any given moment and blending psychically. It seems to me choral singing more than other music, leverages our animal nature and instincts. You have to be very connected in every sensing way to your neighbours, to sing like this. Wonderful.

Indeed, there is magic in this music. But there must also be magic in the way those people connect with one another and with the entire group. Hence the absolute beauty of their renditions.

This brings to mind attending a High Mass in the Traditional Latin Rite in a Cathedral. Their exquisitely angelic voices, rising and falling in harmonic cadences, seem to reverbate right into the sacred atmosphere of the Mass being held, and sacred melody mixes with the multi colored lights cast by exquisite stained glass windows, and the spice of copious clouds of incense permeating the sanctuary. And when they sang that long and spectacular, " Amen" I could see the priest-celebrant raising the Consecrated Eucharistic Species in Holy Oblation, amidst the bells and even more clouds of incense, amidst the hushed bows of the faithful.

This is just what I adore so much about italian music of that time: though liturgic, it seems to be light and delightful to listen, not so strict and geommetrical. It is very, very beautiful and performed with such grace. Now I listened at it again with closed eyes and I have to say: You sang it so beautiful; it is what this is ought to be: heavenly.

As always, your interpretation of Master Palestrina's work is above reproach. Balance is perfect, your diction is so clear, making the Latin understandable. Dynamics help to bring the meaning of the text as clearly as the words. Thank you all for your work and gifting us with this beautiful rendition.
@gmoschetto1
@gmoschetto1 5 жыл бұрын
The Latin had to be understandable as per the requirements of the Council at Trent. They said his music was too beautiful for performance in church and out of respect for Protestant feelings banned it in favor of 700 year old Gregorian chant. Finally now after Second Vatican Council 450 years later, we are blessed with this beautiful gift.
@xxOmnipresencexx
@xxOmnipresencexx 5 жыл бұрын
@@gmoschetto1 Thanks to V2, we are blessed with Protestant mush at most American masses. The Latin has to be understandable otherwise you get masturbatory works like the Ars Antiqua of Perotin or the intricate, "crab goes out whole, comes back half" showboating of Dufay. Furthermore, Palestrina was never banned, and it was his Missa Papae Marcelli that saved polyphony by proving that polyphony could be simple and poignant to the Council Fathers of Trent. I think rap is beautiful too, but there is some music that is not suitable for the Mass.
@johnburns3510
@johnburns3510 4 жыл бұрын
@@gmoschetto1 Best to check you facts before putting fingers to keyboard. Your comment is very much in error. The Council of Trent held its discussions on sacred music in September of 1562. At this time, Palestrina was employed as choir master at St. Mary Major in Rome. In 1571 He became music director of the Capella Giulia at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and he remained at that post until his death in 1594. All during this time, Palestria composed music, much of it for the Sistine Choir, the oldest and most famous Roman Catholic choir in the Church. Far from banning Paestrina's music, the Popes and other ecclesiastical authorities honored it by keeping Palestrina employed and composing for the choirs of St. Peter's Basilica.

@xxOmnipresencexx
@xxOmnipresencexx 4 жыл бұрын
@@zogzog1063 Look, I'll grant that the "Palestrina saved polyphony" narrative is basically legendary. But take a listen to "Sederunt Principes" by Perotin or the Agnus Dei of Missa L'Homme Armé. Is the text of those compositions (the actual prayers that figure into worship) self-evident at all? I'm no Gregorian chant-only radical (which certainly existed during the reign of St. Pius X) but one area where Trent and Vatican II agree is that worship should be self-evident and moving to the layman. How well V2 actually accomplished this is another matter entirely. This ain't Beethoven. In fact, I would challenge you to perform his Missa Solemnis without a quarter's salaries for a multitude of top-flight musicians. Do I think Sederunt Principes, Missa L'Homme Armé, or your beloved Beethoven's Missa Solemnis should be censored? No. However, their appropriate performance is limited to the most solemn of liturgical occasions in the most grand of churches. From a Catholic perspective, they simply do not merit promotion for the average parish or even cathedral. Lots of Palestrina is attainable to the amateur choir and the congregation will actually understand what you're saying. That's what I'm talking about.

I've never enjoyed any vocal music of the early years before the time of Schubert and Brahms.........but things change. With Voces8, I find the music of the past much more interesting, listenable and most of all enjoyable. The clarity of line and balance of voices don't remind me of the years past where sheep blatting was more listenable than Palestrina, Byrd and other composers of the earlier periods. The quality and skills of each singer are apparent and yet not a standout amongst the others. This characteristic is what makes this listenable and quite bluntly....an artistic performance of the highest caliber! My admiration for this group is because of eaches performance and humbleness of part are what makes each creation of music come alive! Bravo! of the infinite degree! As some of our British would say: "Well Done!!"
