In fact, as I recall the biggest difference between the original and the Hollywood remake is the ending. Predictably, the Hollywood version is more upbeat. I was surprised that Christie did not utter the one word that sums up what The Vanishing is about: obsession. The male lead (Keifer Sutherland in the remake) becomes so obsessed about the desire to know the details of what happened to his wife that it is his downfall.

So I'll play and recommend The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Last week I went back and rewatched this after having not seeing it for a number of years and now I'm patiently waiting for a 4K UHD disc of the film.
