You know, a lot of people are praising Animenz for his technique when he starts going off at 4:56, but I think everything before that was equally impressive. One of the hardest things for a pianist to master is a sense of touch and phrasing, and Animenz has come a long way from when he first started out. When you play a slower part, expression is key. And you have to give each note its own meaning. Animenz is a master in this regard. Well done!

Two days after my friend was murdered, I entered the room and sit to the piano, empty and unable to even shed a tear. The melody came to my mind so naturally. I touched the keys and realized I can't stop crying. Vogel im Kafig was my only way to grieve for her. I made my own arrangement then and used to play when I couldn't find another way to get away the numbness. It's been almost 8 years, but I can't play it ever since and even listening to it is still somewhat painful to these days, but it's a great masterpiece indeed, and performed so beautifully. This song reflects the dichotomy of the Attack on Titan world. The first half is so beautiful and breathtaking, while the latter half is dramatic and scores some of the most horrific scenes in season 1. To put it simply, it is beautiful, and it is cruel, just as Mikasa acknowledges the world is. It is filled with love, friendship, the noble struggle against oppression and extinction, but all those things can be twisted and turned into something horrific and cruel, such as Eren. He loves his friends, he loves his home, he wants freedom. And the things he does to achieve them are beyond unforgivable. He is cruel and his love for his friends is beautiful. To the boy who sought freedom, goodbye. Edit: to people who say he isn’t cruel or had no other choice, I am truly sorry your brain works that way.
