Here is something that you'll find even more impressive, Tatiana is entirely self taught, she had a vocal lesson I believe when she was a teenager, but that was it. Also she has said numerous times that she doesn't know exactly what "technique" she uses to scream/growl, but whatever it is works for her. Jinjer is an amazing band as a whole, very unique, very versatile, but everything they produce is amazing, at least for me. Peace and as always, stay Metal young lady. 😊🤘🤘🤘🤘🎶🎶🎶

Actually regarding her growls she's entirely self-taught, at least from the interviews I saw. However she did have regular singing lessons when she was a still a kid, not 100% sure how long that went on, but I think it was close to a full year.

Yes, she has said in interviews that she doesn't really know the "mechanism" that makes her growl work, but she feels some sort of connection from the tip of her chin to her forehead and it comes from "that", whatever that is. Legend. Drives vocal analysts crazy LOL

She has to be using false chords to do it the charasmatic voice interviewed her, she has no idea but with out false chords because she can switch seamlessly and voice is still clean.

"I actually don't hate her screaming here". That's probably the phrase that most of us who didn't like screaming vocals said the first time we heard Tatiana. I know because I'm one of them and I'm not alone, there are countless comments on Jinjer reaction videos of people who say the same thing. I never liked screaming/growling before I heard Jinjer but there's something about the way Tatiana does it, the way that she enunciates the words, that didn't sound unpleasant to my ears. There's only another band with harsh vocals that I listen to, they're a French Metal band called Gojira, and the lead singer (Joe Duplantier) also has a unique way of singing, it's like he screams in pitch. It would be interesting to see what you think about him, so I'm suggesting you react/analyse The Gift of Guilt live at Brixton Academy. : )

Just saw Gojira live and I second that recommendation. I was never a harsh vocals fan but Children of Bodom cracked the door for me, and Jinjer smacked it wide open.

Perennial live at Wacken is another great one for concert vocal analysis. On The Top and Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev are both great too. The most vocal techniques and fastest switching between growls and cleans is in Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne. Tatiana doesn't warm up much, at least not in a systematic way. In concert there are sound tests that get her ready but here she's probably pretty cold going into it. Tatiana loved singing for fun all her life but never had the discipline to do anything with it despite getting a few months of singing lessons as a kid. Then at 15 she heard Otep (I'd suggest Ghostflowers off the Confrontation live DVD if you are curious) and knew this was what she was meant to do. She started singing with every band that would let her pick up a mic and says she got serious about learning growls when she was 18 after building her clean foundation. In 2008 at 21 after performing in 6 different bands she started her own project called Prophecy with cleans and growls. In late 2009 Jinjer founding singer wanted to move on and Roman their current guitarist had just joined Jinjer and knew Tatiana and she says she was basically the only other person in their town that could growl so they recruited her and the rest is history .

🔥Welcome to the Jinjer army! I just found your channel, great reaction and vocal analysis, subbed! Thank you, Casey, for bringing the fantastic genre twisting music of Jinjer to more people! I love their energy, how tight they are, the heaviness mixed with complexity and groove, beautiful singing and growling and especially Tatiana's lyrics! The first time I heard Pisces last year I hadn't liked any metal with growling and it took me a few listens to start liking it, but now Tatiana is my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band (Pisces has been my wakeup alarm for the past year). TLDR: skip to the last paragraph 😂 Sorry for the very long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs! My three favorite comments about Jinjer that I've seen, "terrifying levels of talent", "I hate it when a Jinjer song ends", and "that was more unexpected than my first child" 🤣 I love the story of Tatiana getting interested in learning to growl. In her own words, "I was inspired by Otep (Shamaya). When I was 15, my friend showed me a record of House of Secrets. I was like, ‘That dude - his voice is so powerful. And he said, ‘Oh come on Tatiana, that’s actually a woman!’ I was like, ‘What?’ She blew my mind. That was the time, the moment when I realized I wanted to shock people just like her. I just had the feeling or the intuition, like an extra sense that this is what I’m made to do.” The four current members have essentially no musical training except for Vlad the drummer who studied classical piano. They've been a tour heavy band, on the road almost nonstop from 2013 to 2020, hard work that has made them fantastic live and makes it look effortless! For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies (she gets tons of well deserved credit for her vocal and stage performance abilities, but maybe not quite enough for her lyrical and musical composition abilities). Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, so he's a huge part of the beautiful sound of Jinjer, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and piano, but so far not in most Jinjer songs - I think he played piano in lainnereP) has been writing more of it and wrote nine of the eleven songs for the newest album Wallflowers, first three videos are out for Vortex, Mediator and Wallflower. Eugene composes some - he wrote the instrument music for one song on Wallflowers and a few songs on other albums, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs. The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine in 2009 as a group of three (then five) with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar 2009/2010), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they consider their road sound engineer Sasha to be a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members. One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the way she combines growling and beautiful singing with Jinjer's fantastic instrumentals to be so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top, Mediator and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness, Vortex, Wallflower and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for letting capitalism destroy her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah, Outlander, Dip A Sail and Bad Water. Other favorites are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, When Two Empires Collide, lainnereP, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (those last two are short album bookends that might do well together in one reaction). I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (official and/or live at Wacken, both are must-see), Teacher Teacher (official and/or live in Melbourne), Pit of Consciousness (official and/or live in Kiev/Kyiv, another where both are absolutely must-see) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video). Note that because Jinjer has so many great official videos and so many astounding live performance videos, no Jinjer fan will ever mind if you react to a second video for a Jinjer song you've already heard, so whichever songs you choose, whatever pace you like: hope you'll keep trying more Jinjer and enjoy! ❤🖤🤘

This is Tati's "example" video.. Wearing the bikini top enables us to see how she uses her posture, her "mask", etc... as she sings. The only drawback is we can't see what she's doing with her diaphragm since the camera shot is too close. Her neck is relaxed, her mouth is wide open as a resonance chamber... and yes, Perennial (Live at Wacken) is a great example of the entire band in a well mixed stage presence.

Tatiana is a premier Screamer/Gutteral vocalist. Not even considering her singing chops, she is amongst the best and in my opinion and in many others opinions one of the very best. And ... And... Not just of the females. Male and female she is amongst the best. For me she is top five if not the Best. And then there is her singing voice. Pretty nice too. Many say she has a Gwen Stefani style of vibrato. And she does at times, but she also has Beyonce vibrato. Honestly she's better than Gwen and about equal to Beyonce. She's no Whitney Houston but she could be if that was her only discipline.

Tati uses false fold screams. It's not easy to learn how to use them properly for this, usually only "screamers" and beatboxers learn to control them well. That's a large part of why her screaming doesn't sound so harsh to you, because she isn't using vocal fry (or very little in select places) to get that sound out. It's also mainly how she's able to flip back and forth from screaming to singing so quickly, because the false folds don't really effect your main vocal cords when you engage them. Hope that helps you learn more about growling, it honestly is a very advanced vocal technique.
@caseyreacts3133
@caseyreacts3133 2 жыл бұрын
I did wonder if that was the case - I know the basic difference between false and fry screams but I haven't really listened to a lot of screaming (as I said, it's not usually my preference) so I haven't spent a lot of time listening to the differences. Thank you for clearing this up for me!

Actually I don't normally like screams either - before I discovered Jinjer, i had thought that screams, without fail, ruined otherwise good metal. But to my surprise, Tatjana proved me wrong. I still don't like most screaming, but Tatjana is just exceptionally good at it; she sounds better doing it that other screamers. And she has surprisingly good diction while screaming; with most singers screaming, I can never make out any lyrics. Not so with Tatjana - I can pick up many of the words, even before looking up the lyrics.

(The downside to reaction videos is that you get 100% of our initial reaction and none of what we learn after a few more listens). I'm dissapointed you didn't say "It's a kitty". Don't ask me why, I guess I just like when people with accents say kitty. :)

If you want to hear one of her biggest influences 🤷🏻‍♂️👌 You need to listen the band Spirit Box... Reaction to the song "Holy Roller ONE TAKE" Will have you more stunned than even this in my opinion.... The vocalist for Spirit Box as well sings extremely well 👌 Again I emphasize this who THIS singer beholds as the "Vocal Omega" 👌

only self trained, which shows you the bias in traditional teaching for vocals. we need to let people reach their own personal limits, without trying to force them into "traditional" vocals. its sad really that we do this to singers.

Her enunciation while screaming may be the cause of it's palatableness for you.
