It's also your fault Chase that as I'm watching this I'm internalizing what Chase would comment on NW reactions about Tuomas pulling back the instruments during the vocals and increase the power/energy as the song progresses. Yeah... I friggin' channel my version of Chase now when watching videos of you, Tank and Julia. I also blame Tank for me not noticing any ESP EV-1s in this video. Yall 3 are infectious as hell.

Fun Fact: Brittany stated on an interview that she writes short stories for their albums. She then talks to the band about the feel she is going for on each song. They all sit down, and write the songs based on the short story. 'Awakening' is the first song on their Apex album, so basically Chapter 1.

@@siolux8 Funny you would make that comparison, I've come to something similar when i sat down and listened to the lyrics from this album, i had a very "nightfall in middle earth" kind of structure to it, but quite a bit different vibe, the underlying structure is totally there.

The subsequent album “Abyss” is a continuation of the story from “Apex” and apparently she has been working with an artist to make a graphic novel to capture the story. Don’t know how far along it is, they’ve been busy, but I’m also hoping maybe the story wants a third album? 😅🤞

Hope you're ready for 12 days of UPLOADS! thought I'd kick it off with a long-requested song. Loved this high energy track! today's video had video-, caption- AND voiceover-Julia in it.... let me know if you hung around for the bonus shenanigans on voice acoustics :) I had fun with the diagrams!! EDIT: someone just pointed out to me I generalised the oropharynx a little too much and this might be a little confusing. Technically it is not the same as the Oral Cavity however it is a bridge between the 1st formant and 2nd formant resonating spaces. So technically if you really want your anatomy to be accurate it goes larynx, laryngopharynx, oropharynx then oral cavity (a bit of the oropharynx into the oral cavity is still our 2nd formant/bottle though)!! Sorry for not making that more clear cut, I goofed!

Sounds amazing. Is there a menu / schedule planned? Yes, I hung around and have already gushed about it to one my colleagues. Really enjoyed the bonus segment. My education is in physics (will finish my MS this spring), and it's very cool to see practical applications of wave phenomenon. It's also interesting to see the divergence in the way physicists discuss this. Historically, the beginnings of understanding wave phenomenon came from musicians and composers (I'm assuming operatic professionals as well), and so most of our terms and methods of describing waves comes directly from practical applications of acoustics. However, physicists now would focus more on explicitly describing interference patterns (superposition) where you sort of talked around it in terms superposition's effect on quality. Very cool stuff, I hope to hear more of it.

I think the big reason is because of the nature of the video. With the Full Band Playthrough template, vocal coaches can actually watch what Brittney is doing with chest, throat, and mouth to see if her technique is also good. Cuz a great voice doesnt last long if your technique is poor. Ask Matt Shadows what happens when you do sloppy gutterals.

Another amazing analysis and explanation. Thank you. The explanation of harmonics and actively tuning the voice to those frequencies by changing the respiratory tract dimensions was very thorough and very clear. It's also extremely similar to how high-level athletes tune their force production and timing to different surfaces, implements or conditions, but it tends to be a more unconscious process with force production (still called 'tuning') and usually takes weeks to occur for most athletes. The ability to actively tune the sound production to match harmonics of the performance space in real time is just another area where you have demonstrated how incredibly talented high-level vocal performers are, and my respect for those performers just continues to increase, thanks to your explanations and presentations. I can appreciate music and singing so much more now that I have a deeper understanding of what the performers can actually do. Thanks again for making my life richer, albeit, somewhat more crowded with reaction videos.
@jvoxfox
@jvoxfox 3 жыл бұрын
a lot of high performers will probably be tuning without realising simply because doing so gives them a more powerful sound and so they keep repeating that until it's an integrated part of their technique. it's certainly fun to break down the science of it though :)

@craigcolduck2077 3 жыл бұрын
@@jvoxfox Thank you for your reply. I am blessed. 'Valhalleluja!' (Check it out for your Christmas countdown if there are any spaces left - 'Nanowar of Steel' - very funny.) Yes, there are some athletes who can do that in real time as well, unconsciously or instinctively, based on their performance output, proprioception and / or spatial awareness - we generally call it 'feel' - but they are far fewer than people might think, even at the elite level. It's probably more common in water sports, like swimming, canoeing/kayak or surfing, where athletes have to interact with a fluid medium, (like air in a vocal tract), not a hard surface, like running or cycling. That 'feel' is something that is very hard (impossible?) to develop in some athletes, so it would be interesting to see how you go about teaching a singer to make those muscular adjustments based on their perception of sound. A lack of 'feel' is often what limits some athletes reaching their full potential in some sports, and ends their careers. You will never have too much science or technicality in your explanations for me, and you do explain complex concepts and content very logically and clearly. Keep it coming. I look forward to your 12 day countdown, if you can pull it off.

So glad you did this - these guys are really bringing power metal back to the world in the best possible way. They have a few videos out now - all really great songs, you will love them. One thing you might be interested in is an earlier song called "Tonight we Ride." Lots of people rave about her range in this song - but to me it sounds a little bit like she wasn't as mature as a singer and at times there's a bit of a 'shriek' vibe... I'd be really interested to hear you compare and contrast this song with the more recent stuff. There's also a video of her doing Karaoke - really rough quality but shows that really has the raw talent, without effects etc. And its really fun - apparently they went out after a show, got drunk, and she went ahead and Karaoke'd the life out of a Queensryche song...

I am so here for knowledge bomb Julia shenanigans. Your effortless knowledge display just makes your ‘what the!?’ moments in the reacts more impactful. Especially knowing this means that if a singer gets You to the ‘can not compute’ then they got some beastly chops.

Thank you much for your explanations. I am pretty well versed in physics but am not a singer and have never studied it. You are stripping down what is happening in VERY basic terms. (not sure I could do that) Please stay awesome. :)

LOVED the in-depth technical info at the end! Thank you, Julia! I'm not a singer, so learning about how singers do what they do is fascinating. Wish more vocal coaches would provide this level of analysis in their videos, but thankfully, you do!

WOO! Alright, one of my favorites! I second "The Matriarch", "Soulbound", and of course "Apex" from the standard requests you'll get for them. But I'll also go off the normal script and recommend "Through Stars" from the most recent album Abyss. It's very different, but the vocals just have a dreamy, ethereal quality. One thing to know, if you're not aware during the video, is both the Apex album (Awakenings is the first track) and it's follow up Abyss are a single, shared story told in order. So it's like Book I/Book II with each song being a chapter.

Welcome to the power metal genre. You gotta do "Cleanse the Bloodlines", "Tonight We Ride", "Soulbound", "Faster Than Light", and "Legacy". Unleash the Archers is an awesome band and Brittney Slayes is a BEAST of a vocalist.

Julia, you are one of the three reactors I really follow anymore, with you, Elizabeth, and Maggie. I am glad you spent time discussing the instrumentals, particularly the drummer. Without him setting the tone and the energy, the song would fall flat. And that guitar solo... Love you and your reactions, excited for more!

I know this is an old video, but wow, I LOVED that last part on vocal acoustics! I'm an amateur musician/singer with an education in physics. I've done a lot of studying of frequencies, but it was so esoteric and mathematical. Your description really tied those ideas together. That's the sort of thing I enjoy most about reaction videos from experts.

As a singer, this video was quite informative. It all made a lot of sense. Good job! Now, to Brittney Slayes. I would have to argue that she is one of the best Power Metal singers in the world. The album that this song comes from is a masterpiece. Their new album is as well. There is a lot of material for you to listen to. Have fun!

I love your reactions and I’m very happy that you reacted to one of my all time favourite bands. UTA is from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 and I’ve seen them live 6 times already and they never disappoint! I also met the singer, Brittney Slayes and she’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Awakening is from their album Apex, released in 2017. I recommend listening to that entire album, it’s a masterpiece. Their new album, Abyss, was released earlier this year and is the sequel to the Apex storyline. In my opinion, Abyss is another masterpiece and deserves to be heard in it’s entirety as well! Have a great week! Take great care! 😊

I absolutely love and respect Brittany Slays and Unleash the Archers. Thank you for your in-depth analysis and reaction. It's helped me appreciate them from a new perspective. I think this band was one of the first power metal bands I got into, after always feeling that power metal is too crazy and not musical enough for me. Brittany Slays ...and she certainly does. 😆 By the way, your explanation of harmonics and resonance was very good. Acoustic Fun Time! 👍

The notification from KZbin came at approx 4 AM of the central European time, so it kind of shortened my sleep time and I had to wait till my extended working day is over, so I missed your live premiere and I’m very late - so, please, forgive me for the delay 🙏🏻 But - on the other hand - the classic says that the longer the renunciation, the greater the enjoyment. And I have enjoyed your video a TON!!! This was a reaction, definitely worth the long wait. And the educational ending was great, too. Speaking of the expression and explanation of your thoughts and feelings, you are the most patient, sensitive and understanding vocal coach I’ve ever witnessed on KZbin. Thank you sooo much, Miss Julia. There surely must be a formula to define the harmony equivalent between the song, you are reacting to and your flawless visual and audio presence 👌 I wish you the best of luck to accomplish your pre-Christmas upload mission and I hope you'll get the perfect 12/12 score 💥

Great reaction to a great song. Love watching you rockin' out to it and having fun. Thanks for appreciating the drummer. Love the line "stuff...stuff is happening ....aaaaahhh! I have technical knowledge and experience in this role and a member of my family is a music teacher. Besides that, it's pretty nice to see someone reacting and teaching even a little bit about it in a way that communicates with most people because even the "scientific" part was well explained (the thing that even my family member couldn't do it right). There are a lot of channels that do "the same" thing as yours but with less content and quality, so I wish you lots of effort and a great journey on what you choose to do because your channel is great and I know that you can deliver even more than that. Congrats. 👏👏👏
